A pleasant surprise

I purchased these boots late April with the intentions of backpacking a four day trip on the Centennial Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. They looked great out of the box. I quickly put them on and was pleased with how they felt on my feet. It took about one week to break in the boots, minimal usage.
The boots were put to the test early May when I left for my trip. I put around 60 miles on the boots during the trip. From crossing streams, stepping in bison feces, and scaling large elevation changes, they performed admirably. These boots are extremely waterproof and never had an issue crossing streams. The only thing that got wet after being submerged were my hiking socks above the boots. I found that these boots have amazing traction while submerged, climbing with loose rock, and traversing down steep trails.
The ankle support was fantastic and the boots felt light on my feet for all that they offered. One thing that needs to be noted with the boots in my experience is that there was little ventilation. Perhaps my hiking socks weren't the best at moisture wicking, but at the end of the day, my feet were drenched with sweat. For long excursions, i'd recommend to change your socks mid-day or let your feet air out. The limitation of my experience though is that I wore the boots for around 9 hours at a time without taking them off.
Overall, I am very pleased with these boots. They are excellent for the price and offer so much to the user. I needed durable boots for my trip and these met all my expectations.
Great boots and extremely comfy

Purchased these boots for fieldwork this summer. After four weeks they are pretty trashed but have been thoroughly put through the wringer. While they are trashed a cheaper pair of boots would probably be destroyed by now so, I guess Merrell's pass the torture test. Also, if you are like me, most boots take some breaking in before they are comfy. These Merrell boots were perfect straight out of the box! I would definitely buy another pair and truthfully I might purchase a second pair if there's a 20% sale.
Anyhow here is a photo of my Merrell's near the Grand Canyon. They look brown, but I assure you they are black underneath all the dirt =)
Edit: Recently returned from a trip to Nicaragua (4 weeks) wore these boots everyday. Since the boots were fairly worn I decided to leave them behind upon returning to the U.S., but surprisingly they've held up extremely well - ended up taking them home and will keep wearing until they die. The boots are also waterproof. I crossed a fair amount of streams and so long as your foot is not completely submerged the water is kept out (my socks never got wet).
