Poor fit, awful sole...

I returned this product before using it
Runs large
Size Bought

I bought these specifically because Merrell advertises them with a Vibram sole. And yes, there is the Vibram symbol on the bottom. But my first step in these nearly resulted in a fall. From the toe section up, it's like the sole is a different material and about as slippery as a piglet covered in baby oil. I have more Merrells than I can count and always wear an 8.5, but sized down to an 8 and they were huge. There is a raised bit where I believe the joints of your toes are supposed to fit in front of, but in order to tighten them enough to wear (whilst skating across the tile floor), that section ended up uncomfortably under my big toe joint proper. The ankle strap is too high and rubs. Merrell, what gives? These are kind of awful. Happy Backcountry.Com is so great about returns. This situation was not their problem, but I understand why these are on sale.

"Rugrats" Shoes

I call them my Rugrats shoes because the color combo reminds me of them lol. They're super comfortable, providing great cushion, stability, and flexibility while gripping a variety of terrains well. I went for a walk around my neighborhood, then to a nature preserve nearby of all rock (kind of like Stone Mountain). I very much love the ankle cushion part, adding more comfort and protection from straps. It did not take long for my feet to break in the straps, I figured they might cut into my feet, especially the front, but upon first wearing them I experienced minimal if any discomfort. I would say the more snug (but not super tight) the ankle strap is, the less risk you run in your feet sliding around a lot and rubbing against those front straps. My ankles did hurt a little bit after wearing them for a few hours hiking, though that could be either because I usually wear "barefoot" shoes and experiencing a different placement of impact my feet aren't used to and/or being too sedentary during the lockdown. I would LOVE these in more color varieties!
