    S5 goodness!

    Familiarity:I've used it several times

I needed a new set of wheels for my older Basso that was affordable. The S5’s make for a great all-around wheel set that can be used for both training and racing. Smooth rolling hubs and with the gray decals they look good.

    Fast!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I needed a set of carbon wheels for my older Cervelo P2 that wasn’t going to break the bank. What a great set of wheels. This wheelset roll incredibly well. Super responsive with good freehub engagement. Handles crosswinds great with good braking without the noise. True all around performance.

    Superb wheelset!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

If you are looking for a incredible training and race wheelset that won't break your bank, are stiff, aero, and ready to go, these wheels are for you. Great job Mercury.

What size valve length do you use on the S5 rim with a tube? Thanks

    Great wheelset!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

A high quality full carbon wheelset under 1600g + sub $800 wheelset that's actually very good. I’ve had mine for over 2 years and everything is great with them. Highly recommend.

    What a deal!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I bought these last year for my older Colnago C60 and couldn’t be more pleased with over 3k on them so far. Easy tubeless setup. Great all around wheelset.

    I’m a believer!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

With over 4k miles on them. For me much better than my old Jet 6 wheels. I have them on my Tarmac and they ride great. They preform nicely on climbs and descents plus handle crosswinds good. Strong performing all around wheelset. Also they look great with the subtle grey decals. Well done Mercury.

    Killer wheelset

Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought these and decided to set them up as tubeless. To my surprise these came with the valve extenders and the rim tape needed, even though customer service said they didn't. I used some extra tubeless rim tape on them but I think that may be over kill. The new tubeless tires were extremely hard to get on. I popped one bead in and struggled for 2 days to get the other in and never did. I had to take them to my LBS and it took 3 people and they broke 4 tire levers just to get them on. These are tighter than tight. I doubt I will be able to change them on the road if an issue arises. That's my only down side. These are light and spin with ease.

You may have too much rim tape.

    What a Deal!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I waited 8 months to write this review to see how the wheels perform. Having over 2100 miles, I can say that I love these wheels. Excellent hand built in the US. The hubs are awesome and very smooth. Coming from stock OE Mavic wheels, these are so much better. Very light and fast with Michelin pro 28c. I’m thinking of buying a set for my wife’s bike. Best carbon road wheel deal out there.

    55 mile initial impressions

Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This wheel set roll incredibly very well compared to other expensive brands. Took them on a 55 mile training ride and instantly noticed they engage very quickly, climb really well, and brakes feel responsive without the high-pitched squealing sound.

    What pads are you using?

    Made the leap!

I finally made the leap into a carbon wheelset since I had an upcoming Fondo. They were perfect on my BMC.

    Fantastic!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I’ve had these for 6 months and they’re great wheels. Silky smooth hubs...roll so nicely. Braking is exceptional even on big descents. Handle really good in cross winds . If you’re looking for a full carbon wheelset this is it. Well done Mercury.

    Yep, great wheelset!

    Familiarity:I've used it several times

I love my new S5 wheels. Strong rims and great hub set built very well. They perform nicely on the climbs and descents. Great heat resistance rims. Very impressed.

Best carbon wheel deal out there.

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Going on 8 months and over 2100 miles so far. They ride just as good as day 1. Was able to knock some time of PR. The rims are very nice and light but the least talked about are the hubs. Super smooth with good engagement. Running Hutch 28c tires and they feel good. Love these wheels.

    Incredible value!

Finally a sub $1000 wheelset with great braking and high heat resistance carbon. Very stable and strong plus hand built in Utah. Love them.

    Inexpensive but Fast and Stable

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

So far 2800 miles on them. I was a little reluctant to pull the trigger on these wheels since I was concerned on how they would handle in crosswinds. I live along the coast and much of my riding is exposed to crosswinds blowing in off the ocean. I'm happy to report that they are very well behaved in the wind. In fact they seem more stable than my older 404’s. The hubs are great and very smooth. Can’t beat the price plus they look great. Well done Mercury.

    Super deal!

Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Just got these wheels for my BH. My first 60 mile ride; 2700 feet of climbing with 35-40 mph wind. These are light, snappy, less prone to wind deflection, and very stable on long descents. So far so good. Also they look great with the grey decals.

    Nice!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Put them on my Specialized for some race wheels. Very stiff and strong wheels. Riding with Michelin Pro 25mm tires makes for a perfect combo, especially on rides longer than 50 miles. Love these wheels.

Did they come with brake pads?

It says 'shimano HG' -- does this refer to modern shimano 11-spd cassettes? I have a 2017 Cannondale Synapse and want to make sure it's compatible with my 105 cassette/build. Thanks!

Do these come with the mercury brake pads? On their website it lists them as included but no mention on this listing. Thanks

Yes, these come with brake pads.

I noticed that this wheelset is advertised as being "tubeless" instead of "tubeless compatible" or "tubeless ready". If I decide that running tubeless tires is not worth the hassle, can I safely run clincher tires on this "tubeless" wheelset?

    yes

SRAM XDR? Can I use my 11 speed cassette?

yeah. I have a set of the S5's with Shimano currently and emailed Mercury to inquire about XDR since I am thinking of a new Sram drivetrain.

Do these wheels use a 10/11 speed hub?

It is possible to remove the decals?

Hey Miguel, The Mercury print is not removable, it is either stamped or etched in to the rim itself. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to me directly at krakowski@backcountry.com! Cheers!
