Why We Like The S5 Disc Wheelset

The Mercury S5 Disc Wheels strike a fine balance between a lightweight climbing wheel and an aerodynamic race wheel, featuring a slightly shallower 50mm rim depth that's just as happy pedaling up a mountain pass as it is sprinting along flat tarmac and gently sloping roads.

  • Carbon fiber road wheels well-suited to all-around riding
  • Carbon layup finds the ideal balance of stiffness and compliance
  • 50mm rim depth offers aero gains without giving up versatility
  • Reliable Mercury sealed bearing hub with snappy engagement
  • Tubeless compatibility for increased grip and comfort
  • Hand-built in Utah by Mercury's expert wheel builders
  • Includes rim strips for a simple tubeless setup
  • Disc brake only, 12mm thru-axle hubs

Bought this to fit onto my older Cervelo S3, really pleased, done about 2100 miles so far, so far so good. Good looking wheels with stealth decals. Very well made.

Good wheels, BUT Innaccurate Description

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

First off, these wheels come with a rim strip. If you’re going to run tubeless, throw it away and get some good tape. The reason is that the strip forms large dimples in the spoke holes after being under pressure, making it impossible to seat a tire if they’ve been used before (like if it goes flat and you need to reseat). Tape doesn’t stretch like that. But more importantly, the description here about the hubs is incorrect. They are FOUR pawl hubs, not 6 pawl as described. Is that noticeable? I don’t really know as I’m coming from 3-pawl, and they feel about the same. But I was expecting to feel a difference, I didn’t, and upon opening it up I found only 4 pawls. Still good wheels, light, well made, and true. But the description here should be updated, as it is incorrect.

What a pain

* Extremely difficult to mount tubeless tires (by me and my local bike shop) * Mercury does not answer messages about tire compatibility or anything else. There doesn't appear to be anyone working there at least in customer service. The wheels themselves are ok for the money I guess. However, they're advertised as road tubeless and they are a complete pain in that regard. I bought Schwalbe pro one tubeless ready tires and had them mounted on the wheels by competitive cyclist and the front wheel deflated within three months. No problem right, just remount them? Nope. The fit between the tires and the wheels is just far too tight. I couldn't do it myself and when I took the wheel to my local bike shop they gave me the stink eye when I picked it up and said it was one of the most stubborn mounts they'd ever done. The tire mount is so tight it's impossible to get a regular tube mounted as well, so if you puncture on a ride you're calling an uber. The other wheel needed to be topped off with sealant but once I let the air out I couldn't get the tire to seal again. I'll probably just put a tube in now with a different tire. I've reached out to Mercury a few times to get guidance on tire selection but never hear back. I wouldn't be surprised if Competitive Cyclist had just purchased all their inventory a year or two ago and the company is no longer a going concern. So I regret buying these wheels. If I had it to do over again I would have purchased from a wheel company with a reputation and reviews. The inconvenience I've experienced with these wheels as well as the tube and tire I've had to purchase completely make up the dollar savings on the original purchase.

Trianon. I’m running schwalbe pro one 28c tubeless tires on my new S5’s without an issue. They went on easy and they ride great. There’s videos on YouTube that show you how to mount tires...check them out.

I bought these to replace my Ksyrium Pro's. From my ride data, I've increased my average speed by 0.5 mph, for the same routes. I can't with certainty attribute this to the wheels alone, but they sure feel faster, so much so, it actually feels as the wheel is pulling me along at speed. Being a heavier rider, the Ksyrium's after 4,000 total miles, would lose their trueness quite quickly after trueing and develop clicking noises on the first ride after. I'll update this review after logging similar miles.

Fast Wheels

Familiarity:

These S5’s disc wheels are just perfect. They are light as a feather and very fast. Hubs are buttery smooth. I can't explain how perfect these are. You will not find something with this quality for this price. Love them!

Logged a few hundred miles on these so far and they’ve been awesome. For the price, I honestly don’t think you can do any better than this wheel set. You can definitely feel any cross wind with these, but that’s probably the same with all these style rims. They seem very durable and I’m sure I’ll have them for a long time.

I'm tellin you the wheels are an absolute must have, forget about spending thousands on other wheels. I am running 28c Gatorskins and they’re great. I have thousands of miles on them and NEVER trued them. I know thats hard to believe but BELIEVE IT. Plus they look great on my Litespeed.

Fast wheels, slowest tires ever....

Jared do you know what’s slower than gatorskins? Punctures.

Best value for your money, hands down. These wheels are light and strong. I've put almost 3000 miles on them and the Continental GP 5000 that I bought along with them to complete my light and tough setup. Highly recommend.

Do you run tubeless with your tire and wheel set-up?

I've been running these tubeless with 28s on my Fenix and love them. They are fast and light on the road, easily keep pace on fast group rides but still stout enough to tackle fire roads and gravel with confidence. Very happy so far.

Best Carbon wheelset deal out there!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've had these wheels for about 6 months, still absolutely no issues whatsoever. Drag from crosswind is minimal. Super responsive, light, and fast. I can tell a HUGE difference from the Hed wheels I had previously. Great deal plus they look good.

Excellent wheels

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Fantastic wheel set. Stiff, quick to speed. I prefer Vittoria Corsa tires and the graphene 2.0 were a very tight fit. If you get the disc version you will need the XT outside notched lock ring. After several rides I can think of nothing bad to say about these.

Big difference

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

First set of carbon wheels; first set of wheels deeper than 25mm. Rode up Emigration Canyon today, 11.5 miles from my house to Little Mountain Pass, and rode 3:20 faster than two weeks ago on stock wheels/tires (same time of day; same wind conditions). 2019 Specialized Roubaix. I have these set up as tubeless with 28mm Continental GP5000TL's. At 65 PSI, the ride is so much smoother than stock 28mm Specialized tires at 85 psi. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. This takes "value" carbon wheels to a whole other level. Hundreds less than other respected brander wheels like Hunt.

Jason C.- Are you still as enthusiastic as you were when you wrote this review? I have a Specialized Roubaix Comp that needs a wheel upgrade. I was leaning towards the Roval CL 50 but that is twice as expensive as the Mercury S5. No problems mounting the Conti GP5000? Any guidance is much appreciated- Matt

Hey Matt. No problem mounting the Conti tires. The S5’s are sweet wheels with no issues so far. Definitely recommend.

Hi Jason. I might be getting a 2020 Roubaix Comp that comes stock with DT R470 Disc wheels with 28c tires. How much lighter/better are these Mercury WheelsS5 Disc wheels compared to the stock wheels? thanks!

I was planning on these for my 2020 Roubaix Sport

James and Curtis, Got this for a 2020 Specialized Roubaix Sport. Stock DT Swiss R470 are great, but these S5's are something else. Great on the flats, but I feel the difference mostly on the climbing. Before the S5's, I've tried Shimano's carbon alloy wheelsets as well. They weigh similar to the S5, but the S5 accelerates much faster. Go for it my Roubaix bros, it makes our "tame" Roubaix's a lot wilder.

Looking for a carbon gravel wheelset. Running 38mm tires.. are these wheels too narrow?

yes. the inner part of the rim is too narrow. You could mount them maybe but the tube would bulb out and you'd lose most of the aero advantage.

>Rating:

What tubeless tires (28c) are compatible with these wheels? Which would you recommend?

according to the enve website you wouldn't want to go wider than 25mm if you want the aero features. I have Schalbe pro one 25s though and the fit is horrible. avoid that.

>Rating:

What's the max psi for these wheels? Also, are they compatible with schwalbe pro tubeless tires, 28mm? I've been unsuccessful setting up so far.

>Rating:

Can these wheels be used with regular clinchers and tubes as well?

yes. I've done this. it's a bit tighter to get them on the wheel but they work. may be tricky if you get a puncture on the road.

>Rating:

Hello...can this wheel set be use for pinarello gan disk 2108?

Hi Augustus, You can 100% run these on your Pinarello Gan Disk. Please be sure to pick the correct freehub body for the wheelset. In this case, it will be the Shimano/Sram HG driver body.

>Rating:

What is the max weight including the bike? I weight about 240 pounds.

>Rating:

What will be the max tire size ? Can I use them for gravel riding ??

I wouldn't recommend them. the inner rim width is fairly narrow.

>Rating:

What are the recommended tire widths for this rim for a tubeless set up? Please comment on tire brands as it seems different tires brands can have different measured widths at the same stated widths.

>Rating:

Suitable for CX and Gravel riding?

Hey Mike, Due to the internal width being quite narrow you would be quite limited in tire sizes for CX/Gravel riding. Let's chat on what might be better options for you though!

I am riding mine on nothing but gravel. Tubeless set up was a breeze.

>Rating:

What’s the widest tire I could put in these rims?

>Rating:

Are these wheels Competitive Cyclists house brand?

Yes

No. Mercury is an independent company based out of Ogden, UT. CC has no branded affiliation other than they carry the wheelsets on their site for sale.

>Rating:

I was wondering, does anyone know if these are adaptable to QR axles? I have a Cannondale caad12. If so what parts would I need? thanks!

they are adaptable. All you have to do is reach out to support@mercurycycling.com and they will send you a set with your new purchase.
