Power Competition Tire and Tube Combo Package - Bike Build
Ready to race.
Mercury Wheels' do-it-all M5 rim shares more than just a model name with a certain German automobile. Fast, elegant, and a great handler, both products are built for performance and require a great driver to get the most out of each. To take this analogy further, if the rims are the chassis, then the motor (besides from you of course) would be the hubs. On the M5C ONYX Road Wheelset - Clincher Mercury calls upon the gurus at ONYX for its hub expertise giving you some of the fastest engaging, and quickest spinning hubs on the market. Think of it as dropping in a turbocharged, blueprinted engine fresh off the dyno under the hood.
The M5's sit at 55mm deep. Plenty deep enough to punch through the wind and give you an aero advantage with the stiffness needed for responsive handling, yet light enough for your local muurs and anything short of hors catégorie climbs. The rim width is a healthy 24mm wide plumping up your tires allowing you to run lower PSI for a smoother ride that locks on rails while cornering. Lower tire pressures go a long way in decrease rolling resistance too and the additional rim width better matches the profile of 25mm and wider tires the aerodynamic properties are preserved.
Mercury constructs the M5's using a technique known as Dual Carbon Layer Process or DLP. DLP blends high- and mid-moduli carbon fibers for the perfect balance between the lightweight and stiffness of the former and the fatigue-resistance and durability of the latter. DLP also involves the infusion of basalt fibers on the brake track to reduce heat build-up and increase stopping power. Managing heat is critical in a carbon clincher wheel especially on long descents and everyone can appreciate the increased stopping power which is a common complaint of carbon wheels.
The M5 rims are laced up to ONYX road hubs with Sapim's popular CX-Ray spokes and alloy nipples. What sets these hubs apart from other hubs on the market is the instant engagement. Onyx hubs utilize a patented sprag clutch mechanism that produces instant engagement anytime the freehub detects any forward movement as well as instant disengagement when freewheeling. That means no freehub drag and no noise. The hubs ride on hybrid ceramic bearings, with adjustable preload, and the heat-treated hardened stainless steel driver and 7075 series aluminum hub shell add durability.
The Mercury M5 Clincher Wheelset comes with a Shimano/SRAM 11-speed compatible freehub body and includes skewers, valve extenders, brake pads, and rim strips. Mercury backs up the wheels with a 2-year warranty.

- Q & A
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
USA made hubs! Onyx does an incredible job and is worth every penny.
I've had some Mercury M1 wheels in the past and they have been durable, figured I'd save up and treat myself and I'm glad I did. Amazing how much the instant engagement helps. It's funny how quiet it they are, makes it really easy to sneak up on the competition and when the time is right, fly past them.
Wheels have stayed completely true and have had zero issues. Would certainly recommend!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I have read about the instant engaging hubs and was interested. Found the M5's (which I happened to need a new set of road wheels) built up with a set of the Onyx road hubs. I am very impressed and have seen an uptick in my power by a few watts. I am not sure if it is the wheel stiffness compared to my previous wheels or the engagement or both...but these are a fast combo.
