Gravel ready.

People's definition of gravel riding can waver whether that's based on personal preference, bike setup, or simply the terrain available depending on where you live. The general consensus for riding "real" gravel, think loose and chunky, is wider is better when it comes to tire size as it allows for better flat prevention, more traction, and overall better comfort. But gravel bikes have a limitation on how wide a 700c tire you can fit in the frame and fork and in an effort to get higher volume tires to fit into these framesets, the gravel crowd looked at what the mountain bike world did when putting fatter 27.5-inch wheels and tires on their 29-inch setups. Road plus is no longer a fringe segment of the market and now frame builders, as well as wheel and tire manufactures, are on board and if your bike supports plus and you're looking to add a little more volume to your ride, we'd suggest you have a look at the Tubeless G3 650b Gravel Wheelset from Mercury Wheels for a solid setup. The price is just right too so you can keep the 700c wheels for fast road rides and save these wheels for the gravel. 

The hookless aluminum rims come in at a 30mm external and 25mm internal width for optimal gravel tire support and an easy tubeless setup. It's 22mm deep profile balances stiffness, for a responsive ride, and compliance, for a little more forgiveness over washboards and ruts and the rims are laser welded for lightweight strength. The build quality is top notch and is hand built in Mercury's Ogden, UT facility to exacting standards. Sapim double butted spokes and alloy nipples keep weight to a minimum and reliability to a maximum and connect the rims to the Mercury hubs with reliable sealed cartridge bearings. This setup comes with a 15 x 100mm front and 12 x 142mm rear thru-axle spacing but it can easily convert to quick-release if needed. 

The set comes in at a respectable 1,644g which is only around 100g heavier than full carbon XC options and a lot friendlier on the wallet. Rim tape and valves are included for tubeless use. Please choose between Shimano/SRAM or XD freehubs for your drivetrain and note that the rotor mounting is for 6-bolt.

Coming up on 1500 miles on these and they’re as smooth and true as the day I installed them. Pretty decently light, set up tubeless is easy, and they have a generous interior width to work perfectly with something like a 47mm tire or wider. For the price I was really surprised with how much they've improved my ride. Highly recommend.

Great Wheelset!

First 650b wheel set to try out on my Ti gravel bike and I'm impressed. I also have two high-end 700c Mavic wheel sets. One is light weight carbon with 28mm tires and the other Mavic Allroad with 35 mm tires. I'm running 42mm tires on this wheel set and now the other two wheel sets are not getting much use. I run Compass ultra-light slicks on all wheel sets. I love the way the bike comes alive with these wheels and they are very confidence inspiring particularly when working rough shoulders & rough roads, and dirt roads. I run tubes and haven't tried tubeless. I'm also impressed with the bearings as the wheels seem to spin forever in the bike stand. At 175lbs I run 35psi front & 40psi rear. I haven't noticed any appreciable speed difference based on my average ride speeds but I don't race. Overall, the ride is more enjoyable with these wheels, I seem to be riding longer and climbing easier too.

I wanted a single track set of wheels for my RLT Steel Niner gravel bike. This was my first go at setting up a wheel set. I settled on the G3 650b Gravel Wheelset and WTB Venture 650b x47 tires with AVID 160 rotors. The build up of the wheels did not take much time and I'll quickly describe the process I used. I wiped the wheels down with Isopropyl Alcohol and let them dry. That only takes seconds ..... then starting on the opposite side of the wheel from the valve stem I began using the tubeless rim tape that is supplied with the wheelset. As I applied the tape i made sure to keep a constant pressure on the tape as I laid it into the grove of the rimand kept the tape pretty taught. I decided to apply two complete rotations of the tape on each rim. This might be over kill but that is what I did. Afterwards I ran my fingers around the rim a number of times to make sure the tape was seated well on the rim. I then punched a hole in the tape for the valve stem and carefully trimmed around the hole with a razor blade to insure that the tubeless valve rubber seat would contact the rim. I installed the tire, removed the valve stem core, used 2oz of tire sealant reinstalled the valve stem core and 10 pumps later -- PoP PoP the tire was on and sealed at 20 psi. I have over 50 miles on the wheels and tires now and have to say it is one of the best rides on a drop bar bike I have ever had. The rims do not make any noise and are as true I one would expect from Mercury.

I ended up sending the wheels back, although I was happy with the weight and overall feel of the wheels. However, after 3.5 weeks I still couldn't get them to seal. I had issues with the Mercury tubeless tape tearing, then tried Stans tape. That installed quite a bit better, but over a 2-3 hour ride the PSI would go back down to 20 (with double the recommended sealant no less). Great wheels for tubes, but they weren't for me when setup tubeless.

Bry - Sorry to hear about your troubles with the tubeless set-up. The G3's feature a welded rim and as long as the tape gets a good seal, there should be no air-loss like you were experiencing. Two neat tricks, for any tubeless set-up, is to tape the rim and install the tube with a tire for 24~48 hours. The tube helps

Two neat tricks, for any tubeless set-up, is to tape the rim and install the tube with a tire for 24~48 hours. The tube helps stick the tape down nice and tight to get a firm seal. You can use this trick with any tubeless tape / set-up. After the time has passed, simply remove the tube, add sealant and your valve. It helps to coat the tire / wheel combo with a soapy water solution to allow for easier inflation to seat the beads. And the solution will serve as a test to show you where air may be escaping - bubbles will form around the area in question. You can simply shake a little sealant into the area to get everything to seal. Once the area seals, the bubbles will stop. Should you need help, give us a call directly, we're always happy to help.

I will say that I was a little bummed with the BB dropping after installing the smaller wheels and larger tires. It wasn't a drastic drop but I was already tagging my cranks more than I'd like. Just have to mellow out and coast a bit... ah well. I have really been liking everything else about them though! I don't race and I'm after a PR everytime I go out. So the extra rubber has just kept a fat smile on my face while riding some of my favorite trails close to home. Handling of the bike has improved and I feel far faster when the trail gets rough. I will hold onto the stock wheels for long distance road rides but aside from that I don't think I'll be going back to the 700c. Mercury has made a quality set of wheels and I couldn't be happier while riding.

No complaints on the wheels. Swapping over the correct end caps was simple and the parts were only $25. Coming up on 1000 miles and they have remained silent and smooth through all the dirty rides.

Unbeatable Price

Great upgrade for my gravel bike. Wanted to test the ride out with some extra squish and I was glad I did. Lot of single track riding and I was I was tired of dinging up my rims with the 700 x 38c tires, all the pings down rocky sections can be nerve racking. Now that I can fit a 650 50c, I'm floating over with confidence. I've hammered these wheels and they stayed as true as can be. Would highly recommend.

650B-Curious?

If you have one of those new gen gravel bikes that can fit both 700c and 650b wheels, and are interested in trying 650b without breaking the bank, you should check these wheels out. Pretty decently light, set up tubeless super easy, and they have a generous interior width to work perfectly with something like a 47mm tire or wider.

XC Ready

I picked up this set for XC use on a hard tail MTB, much lighter than the stock set and I'm rolling much faster. For the price I was really surprised with how much they've improved my ride. They've been great.
