    Maxxis' Tomahawk Double Down is designed for all-mountain and enduro riding just like its sibling, the Tomahawk EXO. The key difference between the two is in the casing and overall weight: Maxxis' Double Down casing compound provides slightly heavier, downhill-inspired protection for the Tomahawk Double Down than EXO. This new compound has a TPI of 120 compared to the EXO's 60, and because of that, the tires' claimed weight tips the scales at just over 1,000g. Besides the casing, the overall features of the two Tomahawk models are the same. The Double Down adeptly navigates muddy trails and pounds rocks using consistent, widely spaced knobs throughout, while the square profile makes the tires quick and reliable while cornering. Maxxis ensures that the tires' centers are fast-rolling for dry conditions as well — with the added assurance of the Double Down casing, you can add these to your already versatile 27.5 and know they'll be ready for anything.

    Badass Tire

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    I love this tire. Fast, light, playful yet durable and climbs well even in wet rocks and roots. I've used it during aggressive trail riding and gnarly rugged east coast freeriding.

    Very disappointing

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    I put this tire on for a trip to Moab thinking it would work well down there. It mounted up fine, and had a good look, but from the first ride I was disappointed. It lacked traction braking even on slick rock (the grippiest surface ever), it was not durable at all, and the traction got even worse. The final nail in the coffin was riding it at Angel Fire. It lost traction when leaned over and braking, and was super sketchy. I really wanted to like this tire, but I wouldn't run it again, even if it was given to me for free.

    Drifty but Hooks up. 5 stars. For those who want a slightly drifty tire that'll still hook up, look no further. I put a Tomahawk on the rear (paired with my Minion in the front) and have been loving it for looser, rougher terrain. Low profile center knobs will get you that KOM on the way down and low rolling resistance on the climbs. Higher profile side knobs hook up as soon as you get the tire over on edge.

    Probably the most underrated Maxxis tire

    This is a great tire that fills an important gap between semi-slicks like the Schwalbe Rock Razor and the knobbier, slower-rolling options.

    Mounting the new DoubleDown casing was quite a bit easier than Schwalbe's Super Gravity line. I had no problems setting up tubeless with a crappy floor pump and Stan's sealant.

    The ride is really impressive. I was expecting to lose some climbing traction as with the Rock Razor, but this tire actually has an impressive amount of grip. The funny-looking side knobs definitely do their job, too. I was impressed with the cornering of this tire, and it didn't feel like I had to lean in quite as aggressively as with a Rock Razor to get the side knobs to hook up. The stiffer DD casing probably helps a bit in this department too.

    The Tomahawk rolls fast, and honestly I couldn't feel a big speed difference vs Rock Razor, though the RR is probably a touch faster.

    This has quickly become my new favorite rear tire, and it pairs beautifully with a 2.4 High Roller II up front. I don't think I'll be going back to Schwalbe any time soon--great tires, but fast-wearing and not worth the extra cost vs these.
