Bat outta hell.
While Mavic's newer Cosmic Pro Carbon SL and Ksyrium Pro Carbon SL are the French firms first foray into full carbon fiber rims for clincher rim-brake bikes, it's been meticulously designing full carbon rims for tubulars for over a decade. Tubular wheels aren't subject to the heat and pressure requirements as clinchers so Mavic felt like it was safely able to bring a carbon tubular to market sooner. Tubular wheels are favored by professionals as the weights are always lower and the ability to ride on a flat tire until the team car rolls up makes it a plus in competition. With the Comete Pro Carbon SL Tubular Wheelset, you'll get the same aero efficient wheelset ridden by Team Ag2r-La Mondiale for maximum speed on flat to lumpy courses without being a handful in windy conditions.
If you follow pro cycling at all, there's no doubt you noticed the Comete way before their release under riders during the Tour's flatter, faster days. And for good reason, these wheels offer the quickness and stiffness needed for the mad dash to the line or when called to the front of the peloton to drive the train and pull back the day's breakaway. This all-new NACA profile features a wide, rounded shape developed from countless hours in the wind-tunnel to produce the lowest possible drag without sacrificing stability in crosswinds. The new profile is less pointy than Mavic's usual models, featuring a dramatically blunted inner face that is ultra-efficient in the wind in a wider range of yaw angles. This not only reduces the fatigue of fighting the bike in blustery conditions, it provides more confidence that the bike will handle properly. Also adding confidence is iTgMAX technology, which uses a laser treatment to remove the first layer of resin at the brake track. This innovative process improves braking performance and reliability in dry or wet conditions without compromising strength.
Aerodynamic properties are one thing in the wind tunnel but wheels need to perform in the real world too. The pros certainly think that they are fast and the Comete front wheel often gets called upon for front wheel duty, paired with a disc rear, for prologue and TT stages. Mavic reckons that they are an excellent choice for windy triathlons or any Tri race that may not allow a disc rear wheel like a certain race on an island every October.
Rims are certainly a focal point of any wheelset, especially aero wheels, so it'd be easy to overlook the Comete's Instant Drive 360 hubs. The hubs depart from Mavic tradition, as the engagement mechanism replaces the usual pawl system with the dual-ratcheting rings formally found only in designer hubs on custom, hand-built wheels. The design involves two rings that press together laterally. One face of the rings' teeth is sloped, so they ramp off of each other while freewheeling, reducing drag. The other face isn't, so the rings engage quickly with the slightest pedal input. The design cuts the engagement time down to nine-degrees, a number we might expect to see on a mountain bike hub and are plenty quick to get the jump on the competition on the road.
The Mavic Comete Pro Carbon SL Tubular Wheelset includes Mavic's signature Yksion Pro Tubular tires in a 25mm width, with GripLink up front for increased cornering confidence and PowerLink in the back for a smooth, fast rolling ride. Regardless of position, though, both tires receive a nylon breaker for flat protection and a 210 TPI casing for comfort. Each wheelset is also packaged with quick release skewers, carbon brake pads, a user guide, valve extenders, and a multifunction adjustment wrench.
