Why We Like The Torreya Tent

Our family camping trips just got an upgrade with the Torreya Tent. The large front door with optional awning makes for a grand entrance, and the oversized, ergonomic zipper pulls make for easier late-night bathroom trips. The rugged poles won't lose shape or strength overtime, withstanding our kids' roughhousing and our dog's zoomies.

Summer fun from Refugio to Bainbridge

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Good dimensional floor plan and hight. Super fun features for attaching gear and setting up lighting. I have not used it in extreme weather, but it provides plenty of security and comfort for west coast summer camping. I do wish there was a footprint available of this model.

Great tent!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This tent was raved about on outdoor gear lab. Such a great buy so far. The 4 person is spacious for a very tall family of 4. We love all the pockets and little details on this tent. It's easy to set up and feels high quality. Planning to use this for many years!

Held up to rain!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this tent for 2 camping trips this summer. Both trip had some rainy days. This tent held up! I love the vestibule idea, but setting it up is quite a task. And dropping the poles to close it can become a tripping hazard with both the poles, and the tie down. I would also suggest using an outdoor rug at the entrance of the vestibule if you camp somewhere damp or wet. The approach tends to get greasy from going in and out of the tent. Set up is fairly easy for the rest of the tent, but it is hard to remember what poles need to be under which ones for proper support. The clips for the rain fly are color coded, so that is amazing. All in all, this tent has been the best larger tent I have owned.

Some things to love, some not so much

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

The size of the tent is interesting... it's plenty big for three people and bags/dog, but four fills it. It fits on tent pad sites, but barely. The interior is really nice and the quality of the poles, fabric, waterproofness all were tested and held up well on a two week Rocky Mountain trip. The stakes are complete junk and bent or broke on first use. The vestibule system is awful... the way it works as a tarp and sealed both are lacking. The tarp version is unnecessarily difficult to set up and light rain pools in the middle. The sealed up version is not easy to get in and out of. On the ground, the vestibule has a fabric section that is annoying and gets filthy. Bring a patch of outdoor carpet instead or to put over it. The vestibule also has loops for hanging stuff and pockets which seemed cool but we found pretty useless. Hanging things to dry there overnight didn't work if the rainfly was closed, for example. In the end, while we like some of this tent, we wish we didn't buy this but it'll work for some years since we spent so much on it.

Fantastic high quality detailed tent

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Excellent quality and well thought out details- the stakes are light weight aluminum. The poles are colored coded. The front entrance has a built in floor that also goes along the side to ensure rain does not go in.

Good design, pay attention with rain

Our family of four (two small adults, kids 6 & 4) really enjoy the design of the Torreya. Lots of pockets, inside and out. The front porch is a good idea, but you have to be careful if rain is expected as it can easily collect water if the vestibule is up. Unfortunately the "keep the elements out" statement falls short; there are toggles attached with webbing through the fly - as a result, the webbing wicks water through the fly, and drips off the toggle (see photo) onto the tent door (if closed) or mesh window right into the tent. Took me a while to figure out where the water was coming from. Build quality remains to be better tested this season. I am a bit worried as after a couple uses the stitching on the stuff sack has started to separate. I hope this is not representative of the tent stitching quality. Would I buy again? Maybe in a dry climate, but not in Atlantic Canada. Sorry, at this price and from Marmot, the leaky Torreya only gets two stars.

Marmot Torreya vs Big Agnes Bunkhouse 4

Big Agnes Pros: Amazing vestibule, loved the hoop at the front Poles were non-specific as to location so easy to setup Full bathtub bottom, no seams Front porch Designed in Colorado Cons: Vertical walls seemed like it would not do well in the wind Not many pockets in the tent, those that it did have were too high to reach when lying down Square floor shape resulted in less usable space after putting down 3 pads Marmot Pros: Seemed more rugged than the BA Low level pockets galore Ventilation zips on sides Perfect rectangular floor shape. Plenty of room for pads and duffel bags Front porch Cons: Poles had specific locations, harder to setup Not as good of a vestibule as the BA

Poor design to stay dry.

Long time canoeist and backcountry camper. This tent fly is near impossible to keep off the tent without using guy lines. This is not a big deal if you don’t mind getting soaked during and all night rain. Seriously, I have other Marmot tents and love them. This one I hope I can get my money back. Do not purchase if staying dry is important to you. Otherwise everything else is great.

Great Tent!

I am super happy with this tent. It held up in the Colorado wind, kept us dry in a rain storm and was easy to set up. It is super spacious and provided a ton of room for 2 people and 2 big dogs. Thanks Marmot!

Nice Tent - But Main Pole Broke on 2nd Set Up

I purchased the Torreya 4-person Tent a few weeks ago. We set it up successfully once in the backyard prior to our camping trip. However, while putting the tent up on the first day of our trip (only the 2nd time the tent was being assembled), the main pole bent/broke at the "designed" curve point in the pole. Likely a manufacturing/design deficiency at that spot on the pole. Otherwise the tent seems well conceived. It is spacious and has a ton of storage options and good venting. The front and back doors are easy to get in and out.
