Too big, a bit too thick/heavy

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: 8

I'm looking for a very particular pair of pants: not convertible (b/c the zipper/strap/button irritates my skin), extra pockets, at least some pockets with zipper/snap/Velcro, moisture wicking, and light color and light weight for the heat of the summer. There are few pants that met my criteria and these are one of them. I really like the soft inner lining of the waistline that make these pants especially comfortable. However, the waistline is too big and I can't find a size 6 anywhere. I've tried other Marmot 6s that are too small so I went with the 8 after reading the reviews, but these are much too big for me. The first time I wore the pants it was over 80 degrees and humid and I discovered that the pants are heavier and warmer than I'd like them to be. However, I am keeping the pants (and now looking for a belt) because they are the closest thing I can find to comfortable pants that meet my strict criteria (and because I couldn't make a decision within the 30 day return window - so now they're mine).

favorite climbing pants!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 6

I ordered these pants before a climbing trip out to Wyoming, and was so satisfied with them! I have such a hard time finding hiking/climbing pants that actually fit and are cute and functional, but these pants win. They do run small, I am 5'7'' and 120 lbs and ordered a 6, they are a little loose in the waist but I think a 4 would be too small and too short. Overall great pant, perfect for climbing and hiking and living and loving and exploring and adventuring!

Just ordered my second pair!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I have worn these pants on at least 50 summit hikes/climbs and they've held up as well as could be expected. Although I have punctured them a few times with my crampons, the nylon fabric has not ripped any further. I do think they run a little small, as I am normally a size 4 but wear size 6 in these pants (5'3, 118 lbs).

Runs very small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I normally wear a size 4/6, but the size 6 was very tight, especially around the thighs. I'm petite and curvy - 5'2", ~125 lb. The material was a little stiffer than expected, but I imagine this would soften up. The waist band was nicely lined for comfiness Otherwise, they look like they would be comfortable. I was hoping the small, zippered pocket would be bigger. I'm not sure it is quite what I wanted, so I haven't decided if I will try a size larger. I'm definitely sending this one back.

I have been searching for ages for a good hiking/backpacking pant, and the Sonia is fantastic. It's light weight, easy to move in, has good pockets, and is a great fit for me in the right size (definitely size up - I'm 5'7" 120lbs and usually wear a 2 or 4, but the 4 wouldn't even button, so I got the 6, which fits really well). Also, these pants don't look frumpy, which is going to make them great for travel as well as hiking. I bought two pairs!

awesome pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I wore these pants for a month straight backpacking in patagonia, sliding over rocks and snow, trudging through dust and mud (amazingly it didn't rain at all, so can't speak to that situation), and they were perfect. I'm 5'4", 110, with hips only slightly wider than my waist, and the 4 fit well. I normally wear a 0 or 2 in most pants (0 in Prana for reference) and the 4 in these was just right (perhaps a little close fitting in the thighs but they loosened up), so they definitely run small. I had to hem the pants a few inches. They were rugged but light weight, nice waist band, relatively simple, dry quickly, and the zipper pocket comes in handy.

I highly recommend these if you're looking for something simple and durable, but still want to look good.

too small in the hips/waist

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I'm 5'4, 125 and usually wear a 28 (6) in pants. I ordered the 4 in Dusty Olive and they fit me great through the legs, though I would have needed to hem them a bit. The real issue was that I couldn't button the waist. If the 6 ever goes back on sale, I'll give them a try, though I would expect the waist to fit and the legs to be too big. These pants felt great and durable and I wish they fit... Stick with your normal size!

runs slim in the legs

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I'm 5'0 113 pounds, athletic build. I carry my weight in my lower body. I usually wear a size 2, I ordered these in a 4 and they were pretty snug on my thighs, but made my butt look great. They were also a good 5 inches too long for me. They seemed like good quality material, for average hiking, not so much for scraping against rock over time. I am going to exchange them for a bigger size. I would recommend them for long slender people.

Bought 2 pairs of these pants for hiking in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Pants are very comfortable -- especially like the soft waistband and stretch. Plenty of pockets, good fit and nice length, overall a great pant for the casual hiker. Ordered one sizeup from my usual size.

Wouldn't call them "slim" but I love em!

  • Fit: True to size

I haven't outdoor tested them yet, but they definitely have all the things I've been searching far and wide for in a hiking pant. #1: STRETCH. They're super stretchy but they still feel durable. #2: Lower rise. It seems like a lot of hiking pants make you look like a 70's park ranger in a very bad way; these have a lower (but not like, creepy low) rise so they look cool and are comfy. #3: Plenty of pockets. Two side, one thigh and two back. The back pockets have snaps, which I usually hate because they mean really difficult-to-explain-to-your-boyfriend bruises on your ass from sliding down rocks... but we'll see. They are definitely not slim fit; I'm no beanpole... 5'9" and 160lbs and they're pretty baggy on my thighs (I ordered a 12). Don't mind that much though, because then you don't get weird bumps when you have stuff in your pockets. All in all, I love them! 1 star off for butt snaps and not being slim like in the description.

Love the pants; not slim fit for me

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

These are beautifully well-made pants. I love the color and the material. The specs say "slim fit" but I'm not so sure about that. I usually wear a 12 and these are a little big. Not big enough that I'd return them for a 10, however. The extra room is fine since they're now in my rotation of hiking pants.

Small Sizes /Great Choice for Petite Wom

I am 5ft 1 and approx 96-98lbs; I've been looking for hiking pants that are durable, functional, and not like pajamas (i.e. do not have wide legs, or drawstring waist to compensate for poor fit). I had a stash of girls hiking pants from the days when REI offered girls size 10, 12, 14, 16 pants (instead of the 10-12, 14-16 fits) but they have totally fallen apart. So the hiking pant quest has been on in earnest. The Marmot Sonia is the best I've found so far - leaner fit (so it meets the not-pajama criteria), lots of great functional details and durable materials. I can fit into the 2, but the hip fit was snug, so I got the size 4 - note that these pants are clearly not usual US sizes - yay! - I am usually swimming in a 2-4 from any other company. The rise on these pants is also great for petite women. The inseam is 32 inches, so I did have the hem altered. The one issue I foresee is that they will stretch out too much over time - they have 6% elastane - I will be really bummed if I end up with a saggy ass pant, and probably wish that I got the size 2 instead.

    Marmot pants great

I am of a curvy build,5'3", in between size 10-12 ordered the 12 and did not find that the slim fit was too tight. The material is great.I was in the Amazon and these pants of which I have two dried so quickly.Very stylish .The length is long

      Great pants

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I really like this pants and bought a few pairs. The fabric has some substance to it... seems durable. Nice styling and pockets. I agree with the reviewer that the styling is a bit on the slim side, but I ordered my normal size and they fit fine. I have muscular legs and sometimes feel that pants are too snug in the thigh, but these are fine. I do, however, have a tree trunk for a body... not much curve at the hips, so I always order a larger size that one would think for might height and weight. I am a 45 years old, 5'4" and 120lbs (reasonably fit) and I usually order an 8 instead of a 6. I ordered an 8 in these pants and it is perfect. They seem to fit well for a less curvy figure.

      Great Style Runs Small

Depending on styling, I can take a size 2, 0, XS, or XXS in pants and skirts. Usually bottoms run large on me, especially in the waist, so I was surprised when both the size 2 and the size 4 were not too bad in the waist but really snug in the thighs. I had to get a size 6 (I think I was between the 4 and 6), and as usual, I had to take in the waist. (No matter what size I get, I always take in the waist.) These pants are a great style, kind of hip, and it was worth it to make the exchange. The back contour stitching is nice, the articulated knees are clever, and the leg pocket is cute and useful.

Hello Lynn, thanks for the question. I am nearly exactly your size (an inch shorter) and I would take a size 4 in these pants. I do suggest double checking the sizing chart and comparing your waist and hip measurements. That can be found by clicking the little ruler icon beneath the price that says "Size?" Hope that helps!

I'm 5'3'' and normally wear between a 6-8 short depending on the brand- I'm an 8 in Northface and a 6 for Patagonia....Do these pants tend to run a bit small? I've got a bit of a round bum and largish hips (upper thighs), so I was also wondering if this slim fit will be too tight or more flattering on my rounder body type. Thanks....Anna
