It's not raining now, but give it a second.

It's not raining right this second, but it was pouring all night and after about a quarter mile of bushwhacking through soaking wet brush and understory, you're going to wish you were wearing the Marmot Red Star Men's Pants. Made with a 3-layer NanoPro shell and fully taped seams and weighing just over a pound, the Red Star will keep you dry without adding a bunch of weight to your kit. Marmot built these britches for hiking and backpacking, so they pack down well and feature an elastic waist with an integrated belt, so you can get that perfect fit without having to bring an extra belt along. Side zips let you ditch built-up warmth if you start to overheat, and multiple pockets give you plenty of spots to stash a map and trail-side snack.

Incredible Mountaineering Pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small
  • Height: 6'0"
  • Weight: 160lbs

I don't really understand where most of the review below is coming from, but I suspect he just didn't know what he was talking about. The pants are designed to be used in alpine conditions. The full length zips are essential for putting these on or taking them off when wearing crampons. The extra width at the bottom is so they fit over mountaineering boots. I'v used them on mountains from Mont Blanc to Aconcagua, and love them.

Some poor design choices

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L
  • Height: 5'10"

Initial impressions:
Just bought these online and I found them a great fit (for me) in large and I am impressed with the cut. The hip vent starts high on the leg which is perfect. Unfortunately, it runs too low on the leg as well. These are made for all day wear not as a rain over-trousers so they really don't need full length zips. The full length zips add a lot of stiffness in the material around the knee area, which is completely unnecessary. Also a problem is the extra width on the lower leg; good if you are wearing ski boots but again not necessary for a pants designed for general trekking in the mountains; especially as I would be wearing gaiters anyway. But the biggest design flaw is the zipped fly... at a length of only 4 inches when open it is completely unusable. I have never seen another pair of trousers with something similar. You would have to open the front of the trousers completely to have a call of nature! I haven't used them outside yet so I will probably be returning them...
Overall- poor design

Keeps Your Keister Dry

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Wore 'em while guiding kayak and canoe tours every day in rainy Juneau, AK. The full length side zipper is super nice for putting pants on and taking them off while wearing rain boots. Taped zippers keep the water out. Pretty durable. No complaints overall.
