While some may see "chance of rain" as a sign to cancel the day's hike, the Marmot Men's PreCip Jacket sees it as an invitation. It offers waterproof, breathable performance and a packable design to make it ideal for everything from treks in unpredictable weather to errands around town on a rainy day.

The NanoPro fabric provides complete protection from the elements while still allowing heat and moisture vapor to escape, keeping you from getting soaked with sweat when you're slogging your way up a hill. If you're still feeling too warm, you can open up the zippered underarm vents for instant cooling relief. You've got Marmot's signature Angel-Wing Movement design for uninhibited movement that won't cause your jacket to ride up, and accessible Pack Pockets that are placed higher to accommodate a backpack or harness.

    • Breathable weather protection that won't let you down
    • NanoPro fabric offers waterproofing that won't pack heat
    • Angel-Wing Movement allows free and comfortable mobility

Dryest, yet not ugly, rain jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

This is a rain jacket that my hip teenager son still likes to wear. It keeps him completely dry, but still cool and looking good.

    For the price it's amazing!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Xl
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 230lbs

The only thing you could ask for is maybe lighter or breathable. But that's not a complaint with the price I pay!

    Exactly what I wanted

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 175lbs

So far I've only tested this in light rain in preparation for a trip during rainy season, but it's performed perfectly. Large underarm vents help keep me cool even when I've worn it in warmer weather, and with the hood up my vision isn't restricted so much that I'm completely turning my head every time I need to look anywhere other than straight ahead. Most importantly, I've stayed bone dry.

    excellent

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My husband had this jacket and wore it all the time.....he only wanted the same jacket again! It’s more then a rain jacket.

    Must Have

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This is a fantastic rain jacket. There are so many good things about it. I really like how it feels and fits. Many other rain jackets will make you feel clammy and uncomfortable but this jacket breathes so well that I never experience that problem. I have worn this jacket through rainstorms in different countries all over the world and it has held up really well in each one. I always find myself completely dry and comfortable. I would recommend this jacket to anyone as it is a great value and one of the best rain jackets in my opinon.

    Totally Excellent!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 150lbs

Sweet jacket for all that it offers! The jacket itself is lightweight with all the doodahs, I'm much impressed. The fit was excellent. Not too tight and not too baggy, perfect to have a mid layer within and be comfortable in it. The Angel-wing feature really does the right job. Either picking something off the floor or reaching up high, the jacket sticks to my waist. Plus having that packing pocket is easily portable. Really great buy!

    Works well!

    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 175lbs

I gave this jacket as a gift and he loves using it for working in the hot Virginia rains. He will be using it this summer in Alaska and is excited about how well it breathes compared to jackets he has had in the past!

    Awesome rain jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'8"

Love the fit of it! It's a little roomier for layering underneath. The pit zips help with breathability and it's light enough to take anywhere. Would highly recommend!

Used this in Peru during the rainy seaso

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 205lbs

I bought and used this jacket in Peru hiking the Inka Trail to Macchu Picchu during the rainy season. It served me well and I am please with its performance. I looked forward to many years of use. I had previous bought a Marmot Precip jacket in 2003 and used and abused it for about 7 years in the mountains all over the western USA. I had replaced with a Marmot Minimalist that I continue to wear, but thought was too heavy for my trek in Peru. Marmot products are top quality. One of my favorite brands for every type of outdoor clothing.

Great design ruined by cheap fabric

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: large
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 160lbs

I bought this jacket last Fall to replace the same one I had from 1996. Yes, you read that right, 1996. 20 years of untold adventures mostly involving cycling and hiking, and it stood up. Oh, it delaminated, was never very breathable, a puppy ate through the mesh pockets, and by the end it was mostly useless. But, the shell was a robust ripstop nylon and stood up to abuse: not a rip or a puncture noted when it met its end.

Can't say the same of the current model.

I use it primarily for cycling and find it waterproof and windproof, even here in Coastal Maine where it is mostly windy and wet. And cold. The sizing is about correct (I bought a large, allowing for layering) and, although I loved my old bright yellow one of yore, the Golden Palm is OK, but dark, and not conducive to good road visibility. My complaint is the fabric: it's thin and cheap. I have yet to mountain bike with it, as I assume it will be ripped to shreds. Yesterday while commuting in a snow storm, had a very low speed fall onto a snowy road resulting in a torn jacket, a torn thermal shirt, and a torn elbow. In a nutshell, the coat offered no protection from essentially, a slushy landing.

I did a lot of research into jackets, and in the end, wanted one just like my old one. It is all a tradeoff, especially in this price range. However, given my 1996 Marmot, I expected a more durable product.

    Bad breathability for hard cycling

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 143lbs

I purchased the Precip Jacket and also the PreCip pants for daily cycling to work and back for rainy days.
The breathability does not match about half an hour of fast cycling in a plane area, I got very wet inside my upper body and also in my legs.
my under layer got really wet and my under cotton pants as well.
The waterproofness is also very average, after 20 minutes in a low-mis rain, water penetrated inside.
For medium speed and effort speed, the PreCip is OK, and I don't recall to much over heated, but I expected more.
When there is no rain, the PreCip is very good and block the wind very very good.
The fit is good, I took Medium, for the jacket and regular/short for the pants.
I used the jacket-pants about 20-30 times, but from the beginning I noticed
the average beathability and watterproofnes performance.
for walking and hanging around in the city while raining or windy,
the PreCip is excellent, comfortable, protect from showers and the color
is very nice. I bought Bright Lichen Green that at that time it was available.

    Lightweight, high quality, good fit.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 195lbs

This is a very basic rain coat, but it's very well made, has great attention to detail (things like the velcro tab on the back of the hood), has a modern fit that's not overly bulky, and at a great price. I'm a fan of Marmot to begin with and this does not disappoint. I am 5'11", 195 lbs with an athletic build, and a large fits perfectly. The blue color is very nice on this jacket. I disagree with comments about it not being waterproof. Unless you swim with it on it's waterproof. One review mentioned it being short. It's a hip-length coat and, noting my height, it fits exactly that way. If you are very tall (>6'2" or so), you may have length issues.

    Too short.

I bought this for my boyfriend, and even when I opened it, I had a feeling that it was going to be too short. He tried it on, and I was right. I can't speak for the usage, or the quality unfortunately!

      The worst of both worlds

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: small
      • Height: 5'11"
      • Weight: 155lbs

This jacket is the worst of both worlds – it’s neither breathable nor waterproof. You get damp in all conditions! The only advantage it has over a garbage bag is durability. I regret buying it and rue spending $60 to relearn that you usually get what you pay for. There's a reason these are always on sale.

      Meh

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 195lbs

I've used this jacket on all my PNW adventures over the past two years (hiking, backpacking, bikepacking, and snowshoeing) and the jacket soaks through after about 30 minutes. I even put on a brand new treatment before taking the jacket to Vietnam, and it still soaked through in under an hour just walking through town. I bought this jacket based on the amazing reviews, but I find it to be a backcountry fail.

      Can't beat the price!

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
      • Fit: True to size

Solid, go-to jacket for rainy days. This is a breathable, comfortable jacket and the underarm vents are a great feature for the Summer. The hood is a nice size and adjustable.

      Great jacket

I've owned several Marmot Precip jackets over the years and they're great. It's a no non-sense jacket that's very packable and easy on the wallet. Not the best rain jacket I've ever used, but definitely the best value.

        Unanswered Question

Hello community, it is resistant to leaving it a lot of time in the sun, and can it be washed and dried in a machine?

I ordered a (Medium) Alpinist Tech Fleece to go under this. Will a medium size Precip Jacket go over my fleece or should I go a size larger?

I am looking to pick this jacket up but and stuck on whether to get a Large or an XLarge. I am 6'5" and about 210 lbs. I recently picked up an Eddie Bauer Travex jacket and it fits perfectly as a size Large. Any advice would be appreciated.

        Thanks

        Best Answer

I am 6'2" and 220 and the XL fits me perfectly. The sleeves are long enough (which is very hard for me to find) and the overall length of the jacket sits right around the middle of the back pockets of my pants. Hope this helped.

Id go with the XL. I'm 5'7, 160 and wanted a shell to go over all my winter layers, puffy, etc. I'd had a few experiences buying mediums (other brands) and having them fit but not with a lot of extra room. I was going for super roomy. So I bought a Large. I definitely got roomy, but it's not ridiculous. I do not look like I'm swimming in it or anything, and you're a lot bigger than me, so yeah, XL.

Hello, I'm 170 cm tall, which should be 5'7'', and weigh about 67 kg or 150lbs, would medium be the right size for me? Thanks

My son is going to college in Pittsburgh. We just bought the Patagonia Down Sweater jacket for the winter, but was curios about a good rain jacket for layering? We are from Fl and barely own a coat! I would sincerely appreciate any help you could lend as the climate and weather is going to be a big adjustment!

The Precip is a fantastic option for an affordable and durable jacket for wet weather. This would also fit over the down sweater great on wet days (which there are plenty in Pitt). A nice fleece under the Precip would be good in the spring/fall as well. If you are interested in a Gore option, the Minimalist is a great option as well. Good luck!

I am 6', 220, 42 waist. Normally, I'd order this in an XL but, since I might be wearing a vest or a light down jacket (Patagonia Nanopuff) underneath in cold weather, I'm thinking that an XXL might be better.

        Thoughts?

I'd just go with XL. I'm 6'4", 220#, 36" waist, and often wear my XL with a fleece or NanoPuff underneath. That 42"waist might be a little light, but I'm afraid if you go to XXK the thing will hang down around your knees and the sleeves will drag on the ground. Just my 2¢... Have fun!

I have a 2006 PreCip jacket that had finally worn out. Are the newer models cut any different than the older ones. My old one is baggy in the underarm and sleeves. I was thinking about down sizing unless the new jackets have a slimmer fit.

Heading for a late season hike in the Beartooth Mtns. I feel good about the jacket, a little worried about the size. I'm about 6'3" 215 and am hoping for a snug fit. Run anywhere between a L and XL ... suggestions?

        Best Answer

Since your legs attribute a lot to your height and mass but have nothing to do with how the jacket will fit it would be much more helpful if we could get your chest measurement and sleeve length to determine between two sizes.

If you could get those measurements for us you could either compare against the recommended size chart or give one of our Gearheads a call and they would be happy to help you out.

How does this model compare to the Marmot...

How does this model compare to the Marmot Minimalist? Major differences?

        Best Answer

        Blake,

The big difference is material. The Minimalist is of Gore-tex Paclite and Precip is a proprietary material NanoPro and of course the extra chest pocket on the Minimalist. Both are very breathable and I feel the Minimalist will have a little longer life. I've been rock'n the Precip models since their first introduction and love the weight, waterproof, breath-ability and of course the budget price of less that a 100 bucks. I'm hard on jackets going through them in a couple or so years. I've used the Precip from Mt. Rainier attempts to the rainy Pacific Northwest Olympic peninsula, while cycling and an awesome spring shell for Backcountry skiing. It's never failed me and I absolutely never leave it or the Precip Full Zip pants out of my day pack or expedition pack.

        Hope you enjoy!
