Why We Like The Montreaux Down Coat

The walk from your home to the corner café was a pleasant experience when the leaves were dressed in their full fall colors, but now that that the leaves are buried beneath a foot of snow and frost covers every car windshield along the street, you're going to want to wear the Marmot Women's Montreaux Down Coat to keep that walk enjoyable. The Montreaux's hydrophobic down fill retains insulating properties when you encounter light snow flurries—or spill a bottle of water down the front of the jacket—and a DWR finish repels everything from light precipitation to accidental coffee spills. The hood is equipped with a detachable faux-fur ruff for additional warmth during those brisk winter mornings, while a fleece-lined torso does its part to keep your core warm until you get a hot cup of coffee in your belly.

  • Down coat ensures warmth throughout winter's coldest days
  • Hydrophobic down insulation ensures reliable warmth
  • Water-resistant fabric protects against light snow flurries
  • Plush fleece-lined torso provides a cozy fit and feel
  • Down-filled hood with removable faux-fur ruff
  • Microfleece-lined handwarmer pockets keep digits warm
  • Internal zippered and drop pocket for carrying valuables
  • Long length provides additional coverage and warmth

Listen to the reviews! Zipper did not work - tried so many times. It's also larger in the shoulders and tight in the hips and legs - very weird. I'm fairly straight/athletic-shaped through the shoulders and hips, so was not expecting a tight fit around the hips and legs.

This is very disappointing. The coat seems nice but if the zipper can't be zipped then it's worthless! I'm also disappointed to see that backcountry appears to charge to ship it back regardless of the reason??? That would make me hesitant to order from here again.

Loved everything about this coat until I tried to zip it up. It took ~10 attempts before I got it to work. Hooray! Maybe I worked something loose, I hopefully thought, and it would be fine now? So I unzipped it and tried again. Couldn't get it to budge. Returning, and based on others' similar zipper comments, I won't try another Marmot coat.

I ordered a large size and it fit me well with enough room for shoulders and arm movement. It was not tight around my chest but it should have been a little roomier. I found that the hood was too roomy so I folded it back and that was sufficient for it to fit my head without coming too far forward. Also, the sleeves were 1-2 inches too long so I folded them back as well. The length of the coat (falls about 2 inches below my knees) was exactly what I wanted. The 2-way zipper works well. I like the softness of the coat material and that it is lightweight. Overall, I would say I am happy with this purchase. The only improvement would be to decrease the roominess of the hood and enlarge the chest size.

I resisted buying an expensive winter coat for years and finally decided I don’t want to be cold anymore. This jacket is perfect. It is long, soft, warm and super cute. I’m a teacher who does outdoor dismissal duty all winter in Michigan and have so far been warm no matter what shirt I’m wearing under it. This coat is so worth the cost!

I love this coat! It has been nothing but wonderful for me. I originally ordered an xs but exchanged for a small and it fits perfectly! I believe it is true to size, my lower half is xs and upper half is small. Some sizes run larger, but Marmot I believe is true to size. It is guaranteed to keep me warm from head to toe ( actually at the knees), but it is a wonderful fit and it beautifully made. I live in NC, where the weather is.. unpredictable nowadays. I tend to run cold so this coat is perfect for me! My neighbor even admired it and bought herself one as well. Would definitely recommend to anyone and everyone, and would buy again! Thank you for this wonderful coat!

Shipping was super fast! I really liked the light and soft feel of this down jacket. I am 5.6” and 135 lb, I bought size M. The shoulders and arms seemed tight while the lower body was roomy and spacious for layering. It went all the way to my knees, and felt like a luxurious sleeping back while not bulky. I had to return it as it does not fit my body. A size S would’ve have been too tight around shoulders and arms when layering (I’m always cold).

I purchased this coat but the zipper would not work. Contacted customer service who charged $7 to return. They replied “bummer” but would not waive fee. Was going to ask for replacement but would never do business with this company again. Now reading other reviews with same problem. Sounds like a defective product that company will not resolve.

I needed to find the warmest coat I could find to keep me cozy during these frigid cold Iowa winters! The coat did not disappoint and I love how it fits and looks, not too tight or too loose. I've only used it for this past winter and so far it's holding up well (I have not experienced feathers shedding). I didn't think the zipper was too complicated. There were a couple of times I had to fidget with it but it doesn't happen often.

I live in Chicago with cold winters. I bought this coat because of the great price and down fill. I have had it for approximately 4 years and it looks like new, keeps me very warm. It has fleece-lined pockets and a fleece-lined upper body which is very cozy. The cell phone pocket is large enough for contemporary cell phones. It is a little poofy but other than that, it is the best down coat I have ever had.

I love this coat. I get excited when temps drop lower. It's my go to when temp drops below 20F in Montana. What surprises me is that I don't sweat when I go for a vigorous walk, it's breathable. I do wish I had exchanged right away for the same coat with a better zipper. I have fussed over the zipper but am getting the hang of it, still worth it! When I tried the Montreal, it had a perfect zipper. I think it's more the individual coat than the style because some people hate the zipper on their Montreal. Yes, talking about 2 different coats..Marmot zippers in general. The Montreal I kept is a large because in a medium I could not layer. I am small in chest size but this coat is tight in the chest so had to get a large, plenty of room now. Very soft, awesome fleece near chin, in the back and top front, great cuffs. It's much longer than described, in a large I measure 41 inches long! Beautiful purple!

I was trying to spice it up by trying another brand, I was unsuccessful. I’ve had a marmot down coat in the years past & loved it. So I should’ve stuck with what I know. That being said, the shoulders are just right, not too bulky. I love the longer length, it’s cold in NH. And the blue is so nice.. I will be keeping this coat for a long time.. It’s perfect 😊 And the customer service is wonderful..

I live in Boston and spend plenty of time in VT visiting my family. I tried out several similar coats and decided on this one for its high fill power down, length, and fleece lining. I've had it for about 5 years now, it's an awesome winter coat and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. It's true to size for me (5'7", 135lbs) but if you have wider shoulders or hips you may wish to size up. I ditched the faux fur trim- I don't love the way it looks and I'd rather not promote the use of fur, even if it is fake. I have a couple suggestions for Marmot, should they wish to improve: 1. The hood should be bigger. It's difficult to fit it on my head if my hair is up or if I have a hat on, and if it was deeper it would work better to keep snow off my face. If the hood was fleece lined it would be even better! 2. More down is needed in the shoulder area, perhaps overlapping baffles. I, like most women, carry a bag with me most all the time, and I notice the down has shifted/compressed too much in this area. 3. A more robust DWR shell- I treat it with Nikwax products when I wash it, but I still wish it was a little more moisture-resistant. I don't wear it in the rain, but heavy wet snow can start soaking in.

I wear this mostly when walking the dog in the frigid Cleveland winter and it’s amazing. This is the only long coat I have and the way it keeps the front of my thighs warm is very, very nice. I wouldn’t use it for anything really active simply because the length limits range of motion in my legs. You can zip it up from the bottom to allow better ROM, but I’d rather wear a shorter jacket and warm pants when hiking or doing other outdoor activities. The hood is nice, but the fur hangs so far down on my face that it is crazy annoying. Thankfully, the fur is removable as is the hood. I do find it’s a little tight as compared to other brands XL sizes, but is consistent with my other Marmot jackets.

Could you please tell me your chest size? I am 5’4” 180lbs and a 38c so I’m wondering if an XL will be too small.

I received this coat in 2018 as a gift after my family was tired of hearing me complain about being cold during the winters in Minneapolis, MN. Ha! I am a student so I walk to class and needed something that would keep me toasty. This has done the trick all three winters and I have few complaints. Warmth: I find it very warm. With a thinner sweater or layer when it's not negative, this coat does the job and I do not need more layers. The fur on the hood does an excellent job of keeping the wind off of your face. Fit: It fits perfectly when I am wearing a thinner sweater or two thin shirts and I am still warm on days where it is not negative out I do not feel the need to layer more to stay warm, this coat does the job. When it gets into the negatives and I layer more, like with sweatshirts or thick sweaters, it is a bit snug and bulky but not so much that it restricts my movement-just is a little uncomfortable. But not as uncomfortable as I would be if I was freezing cold! Quality: This jacket seems to be of relatively good quality. It's the first down jacket I have had, so I can't compare it to anything. This is the third winter I have had it and it has held up nicely, despite a few tears on the sleeve from wear and tear (easily patched up with duct tape/jacket patches). Others have complained about the zipper but I haven't had an issue with it. The only thing that could make this coat better would be if it was made of more durable material. The fabric is 'water-resistant' per the description, but it is very thin and as mentioned above, rips and snags easily. Additionally, while it does repel flurries, I'm faced with rain/snow/sleet mixtures quite often and I am always worried about messing up the down. So, either a thicker coating or a more repellant thick fabric, please! The down seems to have moved from some of the places like under my wrists it is thin and near my butt from sitting.

I'm a 6'2" female so clothes shopping is forever a challenge. Marmot has been one of the brands that has long enough sleeves, but not this jacket. Both the Montreaux and Montreal have too short sleeves for me (by about 2 inches). The waist is not too high though (doesn't look disproportionate, like an imperial waist). It's not a bad coat, just not tall enough for me. (I own 3 other Marmot jackets in Large and the sleeves long enough). The length is nice. The hood is adequate. Also, hate the fleece lining, I would be afraid that once I'd get sweaty it would stay wet. Sorry to return.

I bought this jacket in dark blue just in time for the 20’s degree temp in Chicago. I’m 5’1 and 135lbs and got the medium. It was snug in waistline area but not too bad. My problem with the jacket was it didn’t provide enough warmth. I wore 2-3 layers underneath and still not warm enough. I know it’s lightweight, but it felt like places on the jacket didn’t have down feathers. Also there was chill spot on the lower back but when I cover it with a backpack, I was warm.

Disappointed

Purchased this in 2017 and expected it to last longer than two winters (in Michigan). The zipper is already coming undone. When I contacted Backcountry, they told me to contact Marmot directly, which I did. Think twice before buying this brand; for the price, it's disappointing

I am 5'5", about 105 lbs, with (approximately) 32" bust and 25" waist. However, I have pretty broad shoulders and slightly longer arms which have made me size up from an XS to a S in the past. Would a S or an XS in this coat likely fit me better?

I've read through many reviews on sizing for this jacket. I tried the Montreal on in the medium and it was a bit snug, but large felt too roomy. Not sure how sizing compares on these two jackets what would you recommend for size, I'm 5'7, 145 lbs.

Hey Kimberly, I'm the same size exactly as you and I'd say the medium would be perfect.

sizing - I tried on a small in the montreal and it fit a little snug, but still fit. Tthe medium felt too big. based on reviewers here, it appears the montreaux runs smaller. i'm 5'10", 135#. what size do you recommend?

Hey Sarah, I've tried both in a Medium and found them pretty similar in fit (minus the Montreaux being significantly longer, obviously)... if you were on the fence with the other jacket, I'd suggest ordering both and returning whichever doesn't fit. I'd be happy to make sure you get a free return label to send back the one you don't want-- feel free to reach out. :)

What temperatures is this coat good for? Is it sufficient for New Englad winters (for someone who is very cold) or do I need Canada Goose? I am new to the area.

I grew up in NH, this is totally warm enough for New England winters. Just be sure to get a size up, cause it's snug and some days you may want to layer.

I'm 5'11" and 140 lbs. with broad shoulders and 38-31-38 What size would you recommend?

Hi Anne, I wouldn't know for sure but I can tell you that for me, it fit true to size. I am 5'3 and under 100 pounds, the extra small fits me great. It is down to my knees due to my small size but it keeps me WARM! If I want to wear a thick sweatshirt underneath, it can get a little tight in the underarm area. The jacket is so warm, I wouldn't dare layer it but if that is something you think you may do then I'd take into consideration the snug fit under the arms

I feel it fits true to size as well.

I got a large for sleeve length and it fits fine! I'm also 5'11 and broader shoulders so I know how it feels buying larger sizes- but it doesn't feel too big on.

How do I adjust the hood on this coat?

The fur zips right off and the hood itself has hidden velcro attachments. In fact, they are so well hidden and constructed that until I saw your question and looked at my coat, I never noticed the hood can be adjusted. I've had this jacket for 2 years!

At 5'11," 135 lbs, I ordered a size Large to get the longer sleeves. The coat, however, was way too roomy, and it's going back. Love the coat, otherwise. Any one know what the difference is, sleeve-length-wise, between the Medium and the Large?

Marmot says there will be a 1" difference, in the sleeve length. I hope the medium works for you! Hit me up directly, if it doesn't.

I am buying this for my boyfriend's mom for Christmas. I'd say she is 5'5" or so. Her bust makes her look larger than she is. I'd call her mid-weight for a typical American 55 year old. My family doesn't have a bust issue so I don't know how to guess size for her. She asked for an XL. I (5'8"/145) have a M in an older style. Do you think that XL will be appropriate for her? It looks like some people say this runs a little small . . . what is exchange policy if I buy now and deal with size after Christmas?? Thank you, friends!

(Posting under my husbands acct.) In my opinion this coat only runs a tad small in the upper shoulders for taller bigger shouldered ppl. I'm 5'7" athletic/slender build 130lbs. I could wear a small but sleeves would be too short. Medium fits me best. XL seems like way too much coat for 5'5"?? This is a long length coat...I'd think the shorter thigh length Montreal would be more appealing to ppl on the shorter side.

I am ordering for my wife. She is 5'8" 135-140, fairly long arms. Probably a 34C bust. Overall slim to athletic build. Trying to decide between a Medium or Large. We live in Colorado. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Brandon spoke to some women around the office. The medium should be big enough to not only fit but, allow for a light layer underneath. The large is going to be too big and baggy on her.

I see you grabbed the Large already, let me know what you think when you get it, we could definitely be wrong here, fit is pretty specific to the person.

Posting from my husbands profile 😉....I'm 5'7" (longer arms)130lbs slender build. I wear a medium in this jacket. The Large is too bulky around the middle. The jacket fits really nice but I would prefer another 1/2 inch in the sleeves and a hair more space in the shoulders... I find that's typical w my build.
