    Guides Down Hooded Jacket

Your son is the self-appointed king of winter, and warmth is paramount to his staying power through a long snowball fight or a frigid night checking out the winter carnival. It's therefore fitting you bought him the Marmot Boys' Guides Down Hooded Jacket to keep him warm all winter long. A combination of 700-fill down and durable polyester ripstop will withstand snowball shrapnel as he leads his friends and siblings on a full-frontal assault in the neighborhood winter games.

Down is the gold standard for insulation, trapping warm air in a grid-like structure, but it has one substantive failing—when wet, it loses loft and thus, the ability to insulate. The folks at Marmot want to keep your kiddo warm in down, so they created Down Defender. This proprietary technology imbues down fibers with water resistance so they don't immediately clump up when exposed to moisture. Just to make sure your boy stays warm, Marmot also gave the jacket's shell a DWR treatment so it sheds the snowflakes that he doesn't manage to catch on his tongue.

Angel-Wing Movement gives him full of motion without causing the jacket to lift, so he can climb with you and not show off his snazzy, superhero baselayers. The insulated hood keeps his melon warm on his first night out at altitude or when snipe hunting with his sister on New Year's Eve. A flap behind the front zipper protects him against cold gusts of air, and zippered hand pockets are lined for extra warmth when his hands are extra cold.

    Broken after 3 weeks

Not sure what happened and I have gotten no response when I emailed Warranty. A lot of money for it to break quickly! My son is 11 and never had a problem with ripped coats. A new one at that.

Did we get a quality reject?

    • Size Bought: Boys Large
    • Height: 4'6"

Everyone else seems to have such great luck with this jacket, but ours has been terrible. I have owned Marmot parkas for myself that I have loved, but my son’s ripped a week after buying it. Then again. And again. This is in normal use, not climbing through a briar patch. One winter, six tears, total. The ‘down’ is poking through a seam, and the seams are unraveling in two places. What happened? I’m so disappointed. I hope we bought a counterfeit....

    Durable for Kids

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Bought two of these coats for my 6 year old twin boys. They are around 45 lbs and 48 inches tall. The small fit them perfectly with room to grow. My kids have been wearing them for about 2 months now, we've already had to wash them and they still look great. I've bought cheaper coats in the past and have regretted it especially with how much they get used during Cleveland winters, these are worth the extra money and we will be buying more once they grow out of them.

    Great Jacket Year after Year!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 4'10"
    • Weight: 80lbs

With two active boys we know that we can buy this jacket and get 6 good years out of it before passing it along to friends. This jacket packs light, keeps him warm in snow and under a shell in wet weather and at night during higher elevation summer camping. We take it everywhere. Love it!

    Great Jacket!

Just got this for my soon to be 10-year-old son. I have one in blue for my 8-year-old, too. The jacket is really warm, comfortable, and roomy enough for next year, too (I hope). For the large, my son is about 80 pounds and 4'3". Really recommend this.

    Tough and warm

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

No complaints. It's quite warm, well-made, and strong enough to withstand a few diggers when my 5-year-old gets a little to rowdy on his bike ride to school!

    Boys Marmot Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large

My son is 52 pounds and 42" and picky. The coat is big on him, but he's ok wearing it like that. It should last for a few winters. He likes the style and that the coat isn't too puffy. It seems warm and comfortable so far.

    Puff Puff Puffy

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size

The jacket itself is great and exactly the quality you'd expect from Marmot. However, it was a bit more than our "I hate wearing jackets" kid wanted to wear. I guess he'd rather be cold. Though no fault of the jacket, it went back.

    Great boy's Jacket

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

This is the second Marmot jacket I have purchased for my now 6-year-old grandson. The jacket fit well; seemed sturdier than the Ama Dablam, and seemed warm enough for a NH winter. But my grandson liked the color and the weight of the Ama Dablam jacket, so I returned the Marmot Guides jacket. I have no hesitation in recommending the jacket for an active boy.

    Good Coat/Great Price

I purchased this coat for my son for next winter. It arrived on time, looks at ordered, and fits exactly like I wanted it to for this time of year. Will be great for next winter. I selected the green jacket because its his favorite color. Can't beat the price.

      Nephew Loves it!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

My nephew hates having too many layers on so when I got him this jacket he was able to actually stop wearing 2 of his other layers because this jacket was so warm. On most days he wears a fleece under it and on extra cold days will wear 2 fleeces. This jacket keeps him plenty warm. Plus the hood covers his face too keep him extra warm! It's a more durable fabric that I'm used to for down also, which is great for him because he's clumbsy. He actually enjoys wearing it so his mom is extra happy! Certainly recommend for kids.

      Nice coat but "poofy"

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs large

This is a nice coat that looks very warm. I thought it ran a little big as it was too large all around on my 8 year old son whose measurements matched those of a medium on the size chart. My son didn't like the coat as he thought it was too "poofy" in the arms and body so we will be returning it. He likes The North Face Perrito jacket he wore last year better as it is slimmer fitting to the body.

Which is warmer; this coat or the Marmot Ama Dablam ? What are the big differences between the two?

      Hi there,

This one will be a little bit warmer than the Ama Dablam. They are VERY similar jackets! But the Guides Down model has a little bit more insulation. The technologies utilized are the same though, same shell and down used. Let me know if you have any further questions,

Thank you. Is the Martmot Sol Down Jacket comparable in warmth as well? I see it doesn't have a hood, but other than that does it have similar insulation (I see it is a 700 fill too...but it looks less 'puffy').

my son is 14 yrs old, regular thin and...

my son is 14 yrs old, regular thin and height, what size should I buy?

To determine which size would be best, take a look at the sizing chart just above the orange "Add to Cart" button. That chart will give you specific measurements for the different sizes and will help you find the perfect size for your son!
