The jacket would be perfect but for the sleeves. The jacket is a nice, slim fit in the torso but the arms are ridiculously long and very, very baggy. Returning.

My Gravity jacket is the first piece of Marmot clothing I purchased. I wanted something different…something different than all North Face and Columbia coats found everywhere. I love my Marmot Gravity coat. It is well constructed and light weight. It definitely blocks the wind and rain. It is not the coat I would choose for a really cold Iowa winter day but it is the perfect coat for those days when you don’t have to bundle up. Since buying this coat I have bought several pieces of Marmot clothing. I am a fan.

Just received my Gravity jacket and initial impression is that its well made and should be fine for the colder weather. I'm 5'6, 180 pounds, 42" chest and the large was comfortable size for me, however, if anything it runs small. Medium which I sometimes fit would have definitely been too small. Update to my initial review 12/3/17, Definitely runs very small. Arms and chest are tight if I wear a ski sweater. XL would have fit better if it wasn't too long. I'd return it if I didn't buy it during the summer and have it for 4 months.

This jacket fits just the way I like it. It is perfect for the "not too hot, not too cold" Colorado weather. It breaths well and at the same time protects from the wind chill. It has a slim tailor to it and it is not too bulky at all.

While some will call this a "shell" I've been using it strictly as a jacket and have zero complaints. The majority of the time I'm outside for 30-45mins with only a short sleeve tshirt on and don't feel to cold in mid 30 degree temps. I love the color and the functionality of this jacket. It has room that if I want to wear a heavier hoodie, it has room and doesn't feel too bulky.

Great jacket
I bought this because the cut was a lot like my North Face Apex jacket. The apex jacket is great but it didn't stop the wind or do very much to insulate. This jacket blocks the wind and had kept my dry when I have been caught in light rain. Only down side to the jacket is that you might have to go one size larger depending how you want the jacket to fit.

I tried to replace my discontinued 8 year old Marmot Sharp Point without success. This jacket is much tighter in the chest, no room for a sweater. I am slim and even with the waist cord fully extended, the jacket was too tight at the bottom.

Bought this to replace a TNF fleece that had served as my casual work jacket for about 4 years. Wanted something a little sleeker that wouldn't grab fuzz like fleece. Looked at all the usual players and decided on the Marmot Gravity and overall it's a great jacket. The construction is absolutely solid. Fabric has a great feel and look to it, and it's very functional in terms of pockets and layout. It seems warm for what it is, but I'm in TX and have yet to wear it in a true cold environment. I also like/appreciate that the logos are subtle, not so in-your-face as some other brands. I'm paying for your product, not for the chance to advertise for you. I'm 5'9", 175" with a fairly athletic build. I 32" waist, 42" coat and normally wear either a large (athletic cut) or medium (regular cut) shirt. I ordered this jacket in Large and I think it's about right. It's not a tight fit, by any means, and the arms are about 3" too long, but when zipped up it's actually a very tailored fit in the chest/armpits, so I seriously doubt that a Medium would have worked. I don't mind the arms being a little long because with the velcro cuff adjustments it's fine, and with the added length the sleeves don't ride up when reaching/climbing/etc. I would rate this jacket a solid 4.5 stars. My only wish is that the fit was a little more trim in the large, but I'm perpetually in size hell (medium too small, large too big) so I don't really fault Marmot on this one. Highly recommend.

Was in the market for a utility midweight jacket and found it in the Gravity. Warm, fairly light, water-resistant. I also like the athletic cut for those more high-intensity activities. Good for layering or independent use on cool days.

Awesome jacket if you like a slim or athletic fit. Reasonably warm but no good under 30 degrees unless you use a good base-layer. The small arm/should pocket isn't very useful. I used this jacket all the time for about 3 years before the zipper stopped working(wont stay zipped at the bottom). All that being said I love(d) this jacket.

Just received my jacket, it's wonderful! Fit is very snug and close to the body, narrowest part is at the waist line and ribs area, sleeves and arm pits are space full. It is extremely wind resistant, went with a T-shirt underneath at low 50s and I was very warm. One strange thing, even though size is perfect, the jacket seems to be a bit short, reaching my upper hip line instead on mid hip line, like most jackets do. I truly recommend this jacket.

I bought this jacket with the intention of using it for general wear but also to layer it under my snowboarding shell. I found that the jacket was 1) not really that breathable and 2) didnt really stretch all that much. It honestly didnt feel so great so I returned it and bought a Patagonia Adze Softshell (which i highly recommend, btw).

I am 6'2" 175 athletic build and hover between L and XL, depending on the brand. I am looking at this for a spring/warm day ski shell and may add a medium layer under it on some days. Will a L allow me to layer and will an XL be too roomy?

Hey Axel, The Leadville is an athletic fit and the Gravity is a regular fit. I think you can still get a medium but know that the Gravity will fit more relaxed than the Leadville and is a heavier jacket.
Dario D.
November 25, 2015
I have to disagree with this. I've tried on the Leadville, ROM, and Gravity and have to say that the Gravity was the tightest for me. I am 5'8" about 180 athletic and was able to wear a medium for both the ROM and Leadville. The Gravity was very tight in the chest area. The large fit much better.

I would recommend going with a Large in the Marmot Gravity Softshell. The Medium will most likely be too low volume for you. November 25, 2015
Agreed, I am very close to your stats and the Large fit way better. The medium was way too snug in the chest. I am usually a Medium in Marmot with the expectation that I don't plan on layering a ton under the garment. The Gravity was too tight with even just a t-shirt underneath.

I would recommend the Large in the Marmot Gravity Softshell. I am 6'1" 185 lbs. and I wear a Large in all Marmot Jackets. The XL will most likely be too roomy if you are a lean-athletic build. Hey Rhody, For wearing over a down layer, I would probably hop up to the size Large just to ensure that you don't get that sausage feel and you still have full range of movement. January 9, 2014
Andrew, see my review. I tried an Apex Bionic and loved it except it was too short on my frame. Replaced with a Spyder softshell (loved that coat but apparently they don't make it anymore) six years ago, replaced that with this Gravity (note you posted this on the Gravity page, I can't speak to the Altitude) a month ago. Liking the Gravity a lot, it's a real performer. Has wind protection that my Spyder didn't. Chest pocket is on inside but it's big enough for my iPhone 4S and probably a 5. Sleeve pocket is also very cool.

November 21, 2013
Sure, you totally could. Might not be the warmest combo out there though, and as an east coast skier I know how cold it can be at the top of the loaf on some days. I would personally suggest a mid weight fleece, something like the Patagonia R2, or maybe a synthetic piece like the Patagonia Nano Puff. (If you don't want pattaguchi, pretty much every company has comparable pieces, just look around) Seeing as you are wearing a hardshell on top of everything, there really isn't much need for the soft-shell (and it won't give you a heck of a lot of warmth), unless you are planning to be taking the hardshell off and just having the soft-shell on for hiking/skinning.

I was looking for a fall/spring jacket for everyday use(not a whole lot of super aerobic stuff). With that in mind, how would this compare to the Marmot variant jacket?
Andy
Wally Phillips
May 9, 2012
Hey Andy, When it comes to comparing Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket - Men's and the Marmot Variant Insulated Jacket - Men's, the Variant jacket is going to be warmer, but heavier due to the Thermal R Eco Insulation that is incorporated into the body of the jacket. Also, the Gravity has a bit more of a soft shell material for the outer shell so it will breathe better than the Variant jacket. That being said, it will depend on how cold your Spring/Fall seasons get and how much you like to layer underneath your jackets. If you love to layer, go with the Gravity Jacket even in colder weather as the lighter weight and soft shell material will allow for more layering and comfort. If you don't like to layer and your Spring/Fall seasons are cool to cold, go with the Variant. Finally, if your Spring/Fall seasons don't have much cool temps to them, stick with the Gravity Jacket. I hope this helps.

I own a marmot Zues down jacket, I was wondering if the marmot gravity softshell would be a great outer shell for the down jacket?
LRR
Jeff Blackston
February 12, 2012
It really depends on the application, LRR. In short, yes, you can wear the Gravity Softshell over anything, including a down sweater. I usually like to wear a softshell close to my body, meaning only a light layer and maybe a light vest in between. You could always wear the insulation over the softshell if conditions and activities are favorable (no rain and no tree skiing). If you could give a bit more information on your activity(s), that would be helpful for a more accurate answer. Good luck!

Could I use this jacket under a shell as a mid-layer for big mountain skiing, or would that be just too warm and / or bulky? Thanks in advance.

Ryan Hamilton
August 25, 2011
It would work fine. Softshells tend to breathe pretty well and are not too bulky. The shell over softshell is a pretty common setup. This won't be real warm so make sure you leave room for a light down puff layer or fleece underneath.

Hi KLC, The Sharp Point utilizes Marmot M1 softshell, along with Gore Windstopper. The Gravity jacket utilizes Marmot M1 softshell, but not Gore Windstopper. Both are stretchy, and weigh about the same, within a couple of ounces. You are right, the SharpPoint has pitzips, the Gravity does not. The Gravity has the bicep pocket, but the SP does not. And lastly, the SP looks to be just a tad bit longer in the back - maybe quarter to half inch. Hope this helps.
