Chelsea Down Coat

Urbanites need to balance warmth, weather protection, and style, a see-saw act that Marmot nailed with the Chelsea Down Coat. The knee-length cut is all about the classic trench coat look, but the waterproof 2L MemBrain laminate and fully taped seams provide real rain, sleet, and snow protection, unlike a flimsy coat that can cost just as much. A traditional trench doesn't offer much in the way of warmth, either, but the Chelsea's 700-fill down insulation keeps you as warm as a summer subway car, without all the unpleasant accompaniments. Even the details are designed to keep you cozy; the hand pockets, media pocket, and snap cuffs are lined with fleece, and the down-filled hood features a removable faux fur ruff that helps you embrace your inner fashionista if you're feeling saucy.

  • Stylish jacket with high-loft warmth and waterproof design
  • MemBrain 2L waterproof and breathable membrane keeps you dry
  • 700-fill down insulation traps toasty warmth
  • Insulated hood with removable faux fur gives style and coziness
  • Fleece-lined hand pockets keep hands toasty
  • Item #MAR00L5

I really wanted to love this jacket. It was the right length and warmth I have been looking for, but the jacket has some pretty elements. The biggest issue the hood. It is TINY and if you EVER wear your hair in a ponytail or bun this hood will cover only about 1/3 or maybe 1/2 of your head. It is also very tight-fitting against the face so the fur is in your eyes. When I removed the fur the hood only covered up to the middle of my head. I need a hood that covers my head completely and shields from blowing snow. Next the arms are too short and I don't have long arms. When I have this jacket on the sleeves from my sweater stick out and the coat barely covers my wrists. Otherwise, the fabric and pockets were great, but the hood and short arms make this jacket a poor choice for my needs.

I am 5 foot and 3 inches—-ordered a small (33 bust, 26 waist, 37 hips) and this coat fits perfect. It is flattering but still has room to layer underneath. It goes down to my knees which I think is great! The hood fits fine with fur despite many people complaining of it not being large enough. If you have long arms I could be concerned over sleeve length. It feels warm however I have not tested it in winter weather yet. Quality feels good. The company had very quick shipping! Excited to try the coat in winter!

Pros: Coat looks and feels like its good quality. Nice Shape. I like the buttons on the front, and zipper pockets. Feels durable. Long (hits me at my knees- I'm 5'6). Very plain jane, nothing fancy. Cons: Not very warm. I start to feel chilly in 34 degrees. Being used in Philadelphia for normal winter wear- mainly walking into work. I have a small head and hood is still too small (tight around my face) and deep. Buttons at top of the jacket are spaced weird, and the coat is stiff, so the jacket sticks straight up covering your face even when just buttoned to the chest. The fabric on the reverse side also is a little scratchy and my chin is constantly irritated. Sleeves are a little too short- wish the fleece material that stuck out to hug my wrists felt more durable.

This coat is everything I was looking for. The fit is great and it’s warm without being bulky. I have a slight build. The XS fits perfectly and the sleeve length is plenty long. So happy with my purchase

I'm a size 14/16 and most often can wear an XL comfortably. This coat was snug all the way through the waist. Disappointed manufacturer doesn't made full sizes.

I wanted so much to love this coat, but it has two flaws for me. One, the sleeves are inexplicably too short by about an inch which means drafts blow in. Second, I'm not big on the fur so I was really excited that it was removable...except that without the fur piece the hood is too small, not deep enough. It doesn't cover your whole head and wouldn't keep you dry. The rest of the coat fit great, very flattering, and it was warm enough in the 5-degree windchill today. Ultimately if I'm spending this much money I want to love the whole coat. I have lots of other Marmot clothing, so I was pretty shocked by these two weird flaws.

Love this jacket..

I switched from wearing a shorter coat to this longer one and can't believe I waited so long. The fit is great even though I'm a shorter. THe only thing I wish it has is an adjustment tab on the hood. Its a little big on me and I wish I could take up the slack. Love the magnetic closure on the zipper cover.

The coat fit very well across my top half, down to my waist. After that, the flare felt a little much for me, but I'm kind of an apple. I'm 5'8" and wear a size 16 regular, although I probably need to start wearing size 14. But it wasn't squeaky, materials were beautiful, and the top half was pretty flattering.

The hood on this coat is so strange and small -- fits like a tight cap and the fur is weird -- only goes part way around the hood. I could never fit a hat under it and it is so tight that it pulls down on my head. It's also a little wide through the body and short in the arms. It's too bad because I like the look of the coat but I'm returning it.

Wanted a coat that was warm and stylish. This coat kept me warm in 25 degree weather. And I am ALWAYS cold! It is nicely fitted but I can still wear a sweater underneath. I have long arms and the sleeves are ok. I would love another inch but everything else is spot on. I ordered the medium as well but I felt it was a bit bulky so it was returned.

Had an old version of Marmot's Montreaux coat but wanted the more trendy and sleek look of the Chelsea. It's an absolutely wonderful coat. True to size and warm. One thing to note is that prior to ordering I read several reviews about the size of the hood being too small ... I have a relatively large head and think it's a great size - may be a bit smaller if you take the faux fur off, but I haven't done that.

This coat is great! I needed a coat that could withstand the humid winters but give me the warmth of down. The outer shell of this jacket (not detachable) is perfect for protection from the humid elements of Boston winters. With 700 down fill it is as warm as a sleeping bag. Has a relaxed fit at the waist and hits right at the knee or above (depending on how tall you are) and is more adorable in person then in the photos. Would recommend this coat for students needing a warm functional coat for the cross campus treks. Fits true to size but relaxed in the waist.

I wanted to love this coat so I could replace my much beloved winter coat of 7 years for something new but this is not going to cut it in Chicago! The coat fits true to size and was warm and very snug up top but there is very little down on the bottom half of the coat. My legs were cold and feeling the wind. The zipper suck too! I fumbled through several attempts before it caught. Returning.

Just got my coat today as the temperature dropped. Fits true to size and looks amazing. Walked outside without getting cold, the hood kept my head toasty warm! Love how the collar will go all the way up to my nose to keep the warmth in and wind out. Definitely worth every cent! The next day I took a 30 minute walk in 23 degree temperature with wind, I was toasty warm. I've read other reviews about it being noisy, it's not.

And I *like* the cold! But - some context. Since 2011, I’ve been searching the four corners of the retail world for an attractive women's parka that's as warm as my 1990 (550 fill) EMS 'Countryside Outfitters' or my husband’s 1994 (550 fill Northface. Pretty? Ugh, no! Puffy? Yes! Insanely! Warm: like a hearth. T-shirt test: 25 degrees, flying colors. Below 25 - layer a bit. (This, I realize, is subjective.) In the course of my 7 year search, I’ve tested virtually every brand (except for CG. Which may be my tragic, final frontier). Every coat presents the same fatal issue: cold spots along the arms. Most modern, fitted down coats for women seem to have these - the issue is high fill power and … perhaps not enough of it. I realize that asking for vertical baffles, or baffle box construction, would be asking for the moon. Marmot is a great brand - I pin my hopes for warmth on Marmot. But I’m stymied by the number of favorable review of this coat’s warmth factor. It’s very attractive, highly wind- and water proof (and I’m fine with the tight hood, too). But the cold spots on this baby are not limited to the arms - the *upper torso* area has them, too! Even in 40 degrees F. Maybe I got a lemon? Maybe … younger people (ok - I’m old *ish*) don’t have the gold standard of the *really* warm coats of yore to judge by? I’m just going to have to wear a Marmot Zeus ultralight underneath this thing (!) Or - return to my trusted friends of the ’90’s.

I feel your pain. I have been searching for a warm coat for 5 years now....

This Marmot coat keeps me warm in the cold winds that blow sideways. The coverage is superior to a shorter coat The only drawback is the two-way zipper at the bottom. Seems to be hard to join the two ends to start the zipper every time. A little frustrating! I can't do it with gloves on. It is also not as insulated as some of the other shorter cold weather jackets I own for other sporty activities, but I layer up. I use this coat daily and for walking.

How does one CLEAN this coat? Is it washable?

Hi, I normally wear a small petite. I am 5'-1" and weigh about 112 pounds. I really like the Marmot Chelsea down coat and was considering ordering a XS size. Do you think this would fit a person my size?

>Rating:

does it run large or small

Some people mentioned in other reviews on various sites that the coat ran small, but I found that it ran true to size. I'm 5'4", 110lbs and the XS was a great fit. Roomy enough for a thick sweater, if necessary.
