Trion Spine 50L Backpack

Everyone can agree that multi-day backpacking treks and rugged alpine mountaineering missions aren't exactly a walk in the park, but they don't have to bring on the aching shoulders and sore backs that you might be bracing yourself for when you set out from the trailhead, at least not with the Mammut Trion Spine 50L Backpack. Outfitted with Mammut's new Active Spine technology, this pack offers stability, comfort, and a versatile size for an endless range of pursuits in the mountains. With Active Spine, Mammut was trying to find a suspension system that keeps your shoulders and hips happy as you hike, but wouldn't sacrifice the stability of the pack's load in doing so. Their solution was to allow the hips and shoulders to move independently of the pack's body, but to keep the two connected with a flexible spine-like system to ensure that all that movement won't set your load rocking back and forth. The result is an ideal balance of freedom of movement and weight distribution that'll have you cruising in comfort over even the steepest and most rugged terrain.

That's not where the innovative design of this pack ends though. It's got a handy pull tab that adjusts the Active Spine system up and down, helping the wearer find the size that's right for them in an instant. For convenience there's a large easy-access front panel that lets you reach inside the pack without having to root around from the top, but if you did want to root around from the top you could, thanks to the top entry system that features a protective flap. With gear loops, compression straps, and lots of pockets, you've got tons of space to bring along all the gear you need, along with ice axe, trekking pole, and ski carries that let you take on whatever adventure you so choose.

Best Backpacking Setup

I went on a backpacking trip to Havasupai, AZ this last June and I spent months researching the best backpack for the trip before landing on this one. The quality of the build, the streamlined functionality, and the overall function of the backpack blew me away. It was everything I needed for a successful backpacking trip and more. The waterproofed exterior came in handy as we faced multiple downpours during the trip, and the available adjustment points allowed me to adjust the pack to the perfect height as well as distribute the pack load evenly on my back. I couldn't recommend this pack enough.

The pack takes abit of adjustment to get familiar with, the way the hipbelt moves is quite different to most packs. Carries weight quite well but is a poor choice for those fast and light days as the pack is quite heavy by itself. The front opening compartment is great for getting to all your gear without repacking More of a nuisance than and issue, but the way the active spine system pivots tends to create a super annoying squeak with each step. Will try getting a dry lubricant into the moving parts which should hopefully stop it. Not very often you have to lubricate your backpack

Great storage and weight distribution

The 50L is great if you need to pack mountaineering gear or a multi-day tour. I got it for medium-long touring days and it's a bit much for average weather conditions but will say it's been clutch on some gnarly storm days where you want to go prepared for a full day. One thing I'd say is the weight distribution is incredible. Took it fully loaded in the Chic Chocs and didn't feel that much heavier than a 30L on the way up, minimally affected the ride on the way down. Like everything from MAMMUT it's just a really well made product and very thought through.

Great summer hiker

Great summer hiker, although it could use some small storage compartments on the inside.

Great Pack with a couple weaknesses

I've used this pack for weekend overnighters, ski touring (including a four day hut trip), mountaineering, and scrambling. I am very happy with the functionality of the pack. However, I have two main complaints: 1. The spine mechanism is very noisy - depending on how full the pack is it will squeak with every step. 2. The Velcro in the Ice tool carry system is terrible. Otherwise, the pack is well built. The Spine system works well for active sports.

Overall Excellent Pack

The Trion Spine 50 is exactly what i was looking for. Not the kind of pack with endless pockets and molly but just a nice large space that can carry more than I need for camping or a long hike. It allows enough room for my things as well as my full size DJI Mavik Pro some spare batteries, controller ipad mini and go pro in small pelican case. The zippers are quality and the fabric has a very durable feel and still looks as good as the day I bought it.

Mammut Trion spine 50

Amazing bag with tons of room to pack away gear or bring that extra warm layer when out ski touring. A few more organizing pockets or an actual dedicated avalanche gear pocket (with sheaths/organizing fabric for probe and shovel) would make this bag amazing. The inside fabric is also a bit weak, while trying find a good place for my Shovel blade I put it in a spot that wore a hole through after a fairly short walk. Otherwise backpack is great keeps the weight on your hips and you hardly notice it on your back. Bag also packs down quite nicely when you have less gear and never has felt cumbersome while skiing.

Mixed bag.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Got this pack for PNW mountaineering and splitboarding. Good: It's a durable, well-made pack with great aesthetics. It has a lot of internal space and good attachment points for skis, axe, poles, and other mountaineering accessories. Bad: This pack is HEAVY. I'm not sold on the active spine system. It's not enough of an improvement over a normal pack to justify the added weight and cost. The spine prevents the pack from having back panel zipper access to the main compartment. You still get zipper access on the outside of the pack but it's difficult to access when your pack is loaded up with an axe, skis and poles. The other issue with this pack is a lack of external pockets. The "phone" pocket on the shoulder strap can't fit any phone that currently exists. The hip belt pocket is too small. There are no side pockets at all, which isn't a huge deal for cold-weather alpine use but it severely limits the versatility of the pack. If I were buying again I'd save the money and weight and go with the non-spine version.

Awesome 50L Backpacking and Summer Mountaineering Pack

I've used the backpack both on personal trips and professionally. It is super durable and, for a mountaineering pack, comfortable over big milage days.
