Designed to make the climb easier.

Saving on weight without sacrificing any space, the Mammut Trion Light 28 Plus Backpack is made for the alpine enthusiast who counts every single ounce. The 28 Plus model is designed with a particular focus on climbing—the total back length measuring in at 48cm and the absence of a top flap gives you a greater range of motion while climbing. Then, not only is Mammut's Motion T Frame designed to transfer the load weight and allow your upper body to move freely during the ascent, but also removes easily for an even better climbing performance.

High-density EVA padding is placed at the back, shoulders, and hip belt to keep everything comfortable for the ski down, while its breathable design keeps air flowing to prevent unnecessary sweat from bogging you down. The front of the pack is fitted with two ice axe carry loops, daisy chain gear carriers, and a reinforced ski carrier. Compression straps keep your load secure, and the hydration compatible design allows you to bring along a hydration bladder of your choice, keeping a quick drink of water never out of reach.

    • Mountain-ready technical daypack focused on climbing
    • Tough Cordura construction provides durability
    • T-Frame transfers load for stability and is easily removed
    • EVA foam at back, shoulders, and hip add cushioning and airflow
    • Roll-top closure makes for a secure carry and easy access
    • Hydration compatible design helps keep you hydrated
    • Ice axe and trekking pole carry free up your hands on the hill

    Great do it all pack

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I used this pack for mountain biking and hiking part of the AT in snow and it was comfortable and kept my gear dry. This was my second piece of gear by Mammut and I love their products. The roll top makes this pack very weatherproof. It is the perfect daypack and holds trekking poles nicely. I look forward to ice climbing and climbing Kilimanjaro with it.

    Pretty good all-rounder

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Still searching for that one pack to use for any single-day outing, this gets decently close. I've used it for touring, rock, and ice climbing, and it's a pretty nice streamlined pack. I'm pretty short so was worried about the comfort, but it carries well.

I've found it transitions pretty well from a comfy workhorse on the approach, to a light leader's or follower's pack.

One downside is the durability, which was expected - I'm seeing some gashes after one season.

    Hardware durability issues.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this pack except for one thing, the durability of the hardware. Unfortunately, the buckles on the sides, which secure the rope/compress the pack, broke (when tightening the straps, the buckle would not hold and would pop open). The first buckle stopped functioning the first day out and the second stopped several outings after that. I want to love this pack but I also do not want to be gentle with it. I wish Mammut would look into upgrading the hardware to a more durable buckle. I ended up buying a set of Sea to Summit buckles for $30.00 in order to replace the existing hardware instead of buying a new $100+ climbing pack.

I use this pack for multi-pitch climb days. Holds a 3L bladder, shoes, harness, trad rack, snacks, and rope. the roll top is a great feature.

    Hardware durability issues.

    Excellent alpine climbing backpack

I have used the Trion light packs (I own both sizes) for several seasons. They are lightweight and simple, yet provide with all the technical details you need in a climbing pack. Whether you are heading for a multi-day mission in the Cascades, or a day route in the Alps, this pack is all you need. I highly recommend this pack for all your climbing needs.
