Why We Like The Pro Protection 35-45L Airbag 3.0 Backpack

Made for those who spend most of their ski days in the backcountry, the Mammut Pro Protection Airbag 3.0 Backpack has a lighter airbag design, a more convenient carry system, and all the features we expect in a pack constructed for professional mountain guides. We appreciate how the airbag deploys around the head to keep it above the snow, and protect it from hazards like rocks and trees in the event of a slide.

Finally, please remember that this airbag system isn't a guarantee that you'll survive an avalanche. Get educated, get the right tools, travel with partners, and be smart out there.

Nice bag, but lacking ice climbing features

Great for skiing, but no good solution for carrying ice tools.

solid choice for avy airbags

The 45 L compacts nicely and is the minimum size I would use for a day pack in avy terrain. It is a bit on the heavy side but is well designed and quite comfortable. It has good pockets and fits everything I need for a large day out. Would get a 20 L ish if just doing slack country from a resort and don't need much extra other than spot for a layer or two and probe and shovel.

45L

Fantastic Bag. Ships as the 45L. Take out the airbag and you have more than enough room for a couple of homies to put their stuff in for a resort day. No tours yet but this bag is MASSIVE. Collapses down very nicely too. Not heavy

Best overall avalanche bag.

Functional pocket design. My shovel, probe and medical kit go in a seperate pocket. Simple design means I don't have to worry about any charging before use. Great all round.

Great bag!

This bag has been amazing, Still trying to perfect the organization of my gear. The Protection airbag is a great upgrade over a traditional airbag. The avalanche safety pocket is perfectly sized for shovel probe and great to have. my only two gripes is not having an internally routed shoulder strap for a radio but running it out the hydration hole and under the strap has been a non issue. my other small gripe is I was hoping buying the protection version vs the RAS would move the airbag more into the shoulders and make more room for storage in the pack but it seems I was wrong. Still a lot of usable room. hoping I can get my hands on a carbon canister to free up some space.

The best backpack

The ergonomics of this backpack are amazing. All very well thought out. The best airbag backpack, I feel so lucky. The size is good for daypack, I've had smaller and it's hard to fit everything u want for the day in it.

Extremely comfortable avi pack

Despite the weight of the pack, it feels surprisingly light when worn. Easy to ski with - haven't had to use the safety features (!!) yet but appreciate the well thought out pack.

A Great Overall Backcountry Touring Bag

I purchased the Mammut Pro Protection Airbag after doing quite a bit of research on the topic of airbags. Ultimately I came to the conclusion that an air cannister, mechanical release based airbag was going to be the most common sense and reliable option for my backcountry touring. I purchased the 35L bag which I think is lots of room. The bag itself is a great size for day tripping with a bit of extra room for those cold days when you want an extra layer and thermos of hot soup. The extra space can be cinched tight for the lighter and faster days with less gear. I recently used this bag for a 3 day backcountry hut trip and was able to carry everything I needed into the hut with this bag and a few clips for my sleeping bag and an additional stuff sack. The bag is fairly comfortable with good straps and buckles. I am able to use my BCA Link 2.0 radio on the right strap where the hydration port is located, you just have to be sure to route the cord under the strap so it doesn't interfere with the airbag deployment. The airbag system and cannister are fairly small and don't get in the way much when packing from the back of the back. Overall the bag is a great buy and I would recommend to anyone looking to get a backpack for touring with an airbag. For critiques, I have noted a few things that I think the bag designers should look into: - A tight mesh internal pocket would be nice in both compartments to be able to store spare batteries and your avalanche safety cards. - It would be nice if the back was able to zip all the way down to the bottom to allow the back flap to open up more easily to use as a seat when having lunch. - The front upper strap has come off the bag a few times for me already and I luckily haven't lost it yet. It may be good to find a way to better secure this movable strap mount. - With the airbag system in place, it is difficult to use the top zipper and goggle compartment. Its doable but quite tight. You can fit either a Nalgene water bottle OR a set of goggles but not both and once used you cant really use the other zone. - It would be nice to be able to purge the remaining air in the bag while re-packing (maybe removing the cannister allows air to backflow out of the system?) I find it is a bit tricky to get the airbag totally empty when re-packing and the added air makes it even harder to re-pack. Finally I would love to see Mammut come out with a small 15-18L pack that is compatible with the PAS system so that you could use the airbag when cat skiing. Just enough room for a shovel, probe, and small first aid kit.

3rd Mammut bag over the last 3 years

I now have the small medium and now this larger bag. The small is perfect for Heli. Medium is perfect for day trips. The big is perfect if your going on multi days. OR if like me getting into guiding and need to carry an emergency sled and supplies. Super stoked to finally have the biggest one they make. Plus one of the biggest reasons people don't wear a bag is because of trauma during a slide. It's DAMN hard to say this won't only give you better protection but also floatation. Get educated don't put yourself in a position where you need to use it, but great to have.

It works, this is my third one

Its great for recreation, however the reason I have it if for professional use. I love the fact that it comes over my shoulder. The one big issue is that it wets out I would in a maritime snowpack and if this bag was made with a real waterproof material, then that would be great. Bottom line is it wets out.
