Why We Like The Mammut Ducan Low GTX Hiking Shoe

Mammut's logo may be a mammoth, but their Ducan Low GTX hiking shoe is light and nimble—not elephant-like on the trail. It literally puts a spring into our step with Mammut's Flextron technology, which uses a spring-steel sole for shock absorption and energy return on every step. Its GORE-TEX membrane keeps us dry and comfortable on soggy hikes while the Vibram rubber provides reliable grip, particularly on rocky terrain. It's a light yet stable hiking shoe that keeps us comfortable from the trailhead to the summit.

These shoes are obviously well made but they are stiff and uncomfortable. I returned them because they simply hurt my feet....

Buy them!

What an outstanding little shoe! If you have followed Mammut or just shoe tech in generally, you may recall Mammut's flextron technology. I understand the intent of Mammut's use of a shank and was fairly excited how they executed this feature. Boy was I happy that Mammut revived and improve upon this older technology. This shoe is great for all light terrain hiking from deciduous forest to desert rocky terrains. The sole is tough, and the materials used to construct the upper are truly world class. The only drawback is a lack of traction on wet surfaces (smooth rock, metal pipe, wet logs). If you're looking into this shoe, I recommend you give them a try.

The shoes are very durable and fit great, but they set off metal detectors. Could have worn them longer but the laces broke and it's hard to find new ones that work as well. So I bought a new pair.

Great Shoe after break-in not great for going on flights

Just a heads up on this shoe. There appears to be some type of metal or support structure that sets off the detectors at airports... If you have TSA pre-check and enjoy the comfort of keeping your shoes on... these will set off the detector every time and you will have to take your shoes off

The shoes are great for hiking. Nice and stiff with great traction on dry and wet surfaces. They do well on icy surfaces also. I would buy these again for casual hiking and everyday wear. Update - Shoes are holding up well, however I have a couple issues that developed. The toe box is a little tight and wears on the little toe. Also, I would highly recommend getting different laces. These shoes come untied easily and often.

Fastastic hiking shoe

This shoe fits very similar to my street shoe size, so I sized up a half size to account for larger socks and to not get toe crush when descending steep trails. So far I have about 25 miles on them and plenty of elevation. Right out of the box the fit is great, although I have narrow feet, the toebox feels roomy without without being too big. No heel slip, hot spots, blisters, or rubbing. The cut is below the ankle bone which I am prone to have rubbing. I only experienced this rubbing when descending extremely steep, uneven terrain.

Really impressed with functionality waterproof design and comfort. A full weekend on my feet in these engaging in rugged multi sport activities and they were so comfortable and light feeling I almost forgot to take them off at bedtime, and all day they stood up to and performed great at every challenge.

Trail Boss

First impression is rugged to take on most trails. Traction is solid and good comfort. Seems like they would hold up well.

Throw away your trail runners

Why do people insist on using trail runners for a backpacking "boot" replacement when there's perfectly good backpacking shoes out there like this? This shoe is comfy out of the box, super durable (so far), completely waterproof and you have the added benefit of NOT feeling every rock through the sole. The vibram soles far outweigh any trail runner around and won't fail on loose surfaces. Highly recommend.
