Robust and reliable.

Mammut designed its Crater HS Jacket for the unpredictable and frequently harsh conditions you’ll encounter in the high alpine. It’s composed of a highly waterproof and breathable three-layer Gore-Tex shell to keep pace with fast-moving ascents, while a simple yet effective design delivers critical coverage without adding unnecessary bulk or weight. The hood, which can be adjusted at the back and front, fits over most climbing helmets and is bolstered by easy-to-access underarm vents to let excess heat escape, preventing wet base- and mid-layers when you’re pushing through high winds and heavy snowfall.

Great Performing Shell

Works well in the conditions it's intended for. I use it for my waterproof outer layer for skiing both in the resort and backcountry. Keeps me dry and blocks the wind well. Nice pit zips as well. Hood is very large, so great for over a helmet, but needs to be synched down a lot without a helmet. Space around neck and chin are just a little tight for my preference when fully zipped for absolute comfort, but performs well when it's needed to keep the elements out. I sized up to have room for layering. Very good freedom of movement. Overall I like this shell and hope it's lasts a long time.

Performs great

This jacket allows me to be very active without getting wet from the inside, I take it with me for nearly all activities. Fit runs a bit small, size up if you plan on wearing a lot of layers under. I'm 6'1 150lbs and got a Large

Super sweet Shell.

This shell is ridiculously water proof, windproof. I have used it many times while skinning up mountains and its performance is great. It breathes well. On the way down I have plenty of room for an insulation layer underneath. I would definitely buy this again. I do recommend it.

Great quality to price ratio

I work at a cat ski operation as well as ski the backcountry on a weekly basis. This jacket became my new work, and go to jacket for all things winter. Although it's only regular gore, I was impressed on the durability so far. I put my skis over my shoulder in between my pack for sledding or boot packing, I've had other jackets rip from the pins catching but not the crater. The chest pockets are a perfect design for radios and skins. Neck is a little tighter than I wanted but it's not intruding enough for me to steer away. I'm 5'9 180lbs and I bought a Large. I don't like skin tight clothing, so the jacket is a loose fit for me at this size like a regular jacket you'd find in North America. I can fit a base layer and mid layer at this size, fit was spot on. Nice work Mammut!

High Quality and Simple Hardshell

I bought this as a hardshell for wetter days skiing at the resort. I prefer simple shells with less bells and whistles to keep them lightweight. This jacket is really well built and designed, and the fit is great (M, 5'9" 155 lb). Its lightweight and stashes easily in a pack, but feels burly enough I'm not worried about snags, and it just feels solid. The hood fits over a ski helmet well, and is not overly baggy so I've started using it more and more in the backcountry as my go-to waterproof shell. The Gore-Tex delivers on waterproofness, and I really dig the cut of the cuffs that fit easily over under-cuff gloves, but can close down easily for gloves that fit over the cuff. If you're looking for a simple, durable, waterproof shell. The Crater HS is a great choice.

Excellent shell for skiing!

I bought this last winter as my first GoreTex shell. I intended it for cold days in the backcountry. It performed well in minus 20 with the wind and blowing snow, with a base layer underneath. The jacket has a relaxed fit. I am 171 cm, 170 lbs, and a size Medium would fit me. I got a Large though, for the purpose of layering if needed. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase.

Excellent and fairly beefy hardshell. Pit zips and pockets are well placed and easy to access. I've found the main zipper to be a little sticky starting out but I'm sure that'll loosen up with time/ a little silicone grease. I plan on using this as a 4 season shell; it layers exceptionally well and the articulation fits my athletic build very nicely. Helmet compatible hood works with all my helmets but is also easily cinched down for helmet-less comfort. While for true summer use I'll still be using some of my lighter weight shells, this will be excellent for everything from skiing to mountaineering to slightly less weight conscious backpacking excursions. Excellent as expected from Mammut.
