Best Softshell Pants!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
32Reg
Height:
5' 11"
Weight:

I'm ordering a second pair of these! I've had the first pair for a couple of years now, and they are very durable and fit great (and still in great shape). I've used them for Class 3 - 14ers, hiking, snowshoeing and trekking in Italy and love them!

Great simple pants. Size up.

These get 100 days of use a year in various wilderness settings. Biking, XC Skiing, bushcraft, seem to hold up season after season. These aren't carhartts... Not the best around fire, holes will melt with sparks as with any thin synthetic. Cinchable hem at ankles allowed you to pull pants up to knees easily for extra breathability. I had a snap on one of the cinches break. Would be nice if Mammut included an extra snap so that you can repair with like hardware. Great stretch and mobility. For some reason when paired with Murino wool boxers smell crept up. Work fine with cotton. Keep pockets zipped can tear if left open often.

Well-fitted, comfortable, protective pants

Durable, comfortable, fitted pants. Light weight for how tough they are. So far used for hiking in Canadian Rockies where some leg contact with rock inevitable but pants stood up to the test and provided the needed protection. Pants are appropriate for many activities including hiking, scrambling, mountaineering, and rock climbing. Good protection from rock abrasion, wind, cold and some water proofness. Suitable for all levels of participant.

Decent Softshell Pants- May be better options

I put these pants to the test by wearing them for 6 days straight while on a glacier trip... These were relatively breathable pants, although a bit thick for summer glacier days. There were times where they'd be too hot and I wish they had side vents. I did puncture a few holes in the legs with my crampons, but wouldn't expect these semi-entry level pants to prevent that. I did notice that dirt got stuck to the pants easily, so was hard to keep them clean. All considered, they were great pants that I'll continue to use for similar alpine & mountaineering objectives. I wouldn't recommend them for touring unless it's a day where your internal temperature fluctuates too much

Fantastic product, confusing sizing

The whole sizing situation can be a bit perplexing, echoing what others have already pointed out with different pants. So, my usual gig is a 32 in regular pants. So, I went ahead and snagged both these Courmayeur ones and the Aenergy Light SO pants, both in a trusty 32. Now, the Aenergy buddies fit just right, got a little breathing space which is cool because they've got those nifty tie strings to do a little cinching if needed. But now, these Courmayeur fellas, whoa, they're like snug city, bordering on that 30 or maybe even a 29 vibe. But hey, they do stretch a tad, so they manage to squeeze in there. Technically a fit, but definitely hugging tight. I was sort of banking on the Courmayeur pair giving me some extra play, considering they seem pretty heavy-duty and I had dreams of sliding on some tights underneath for extra toasty ventures. But darn, no such luck. These pants are like, "Sorry mate, no extra room on the guest list, we're full." In hindsight, I'd probably have gone with a 34 for the Courmayeur champs, and stuck to my guns with a 32 for the Aenergy champs. Just my two cents!

Fantastic climbing pants

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
30/ reg

I bought these on a whim, some guy on the proj said they held up to a fair amount of offwidth abuse so I figured I’d give em a shot, and man am I glad I made that call! Sizing seems perfect for me, I bought a 30 reg and they fit like I’d expect em to. The hips have a built in tensioning system that uses Velcro, but not like cheap 90s Velcro, more like space age Swiss sexy Velcro. The ankles have nice snap clips so you can snug em up if you’re jamming your feet in cracks. I’ve used them climbing in the PNW on chilly days and in some poor weather conditions, they’ve always kept me warm and dry. I did a few days of bolting in them and they held up very well to that abuse. I even rocked em on an ice climbing trip and they seem to perform exceptionally well in the cold and wet conditions, honestly they never soaked thru even after hours out in the elements. These are an all around great pant and active layer for adventures in the mountains, they also make a great travel pant as they look good in the city and stay deceptively clean looking even after being abused in the backcountry. I plan on buying a few more pairs to have color options. Yes, you should buy them.

functional & stylish

love these pants. kept me very warm and dry quickly when they get wet. great to use in the snow or even when it's drizzling out. the fit makes them very stylish so you can go from the mountains into the city without anyone giving you a second look. I liked velcro waistband way more than I thought it would and helps get the pants as tight or loose as you'd like. the zipper also goes all the way up to the top button which, for whatever reason, makes everything feel more secure.

Excellent cool and cold weather climbing pants!

Great fit and comfort through a full range of movements. Durable and light fabric that doesn't chafe skin under the harness. Well placed front zipper pocket that rides ideally below leg loops. I use these cragging and on alpine walls. I may try them for a skimo/touring pant this winter. So far, I'm stoked I got these pants!

Arcteryx level durability, great for non-wet activities

I'm 6'0, 175 lbs and usually wear a 32 waist. I ordered the 48 and it is an exact fit, but not much room for tucking layers or putting over anything. Waist is adjustable thankfully, so it will work great. If I'm in tougher elements, I'd likely wear my Aenergy Hardshell pants over these just because I'm in the PNW and want to prevent any wetness whatsoever. On ski touring/hiking days in Utah/Montana where it is drier, this is what I'd be wearing. Very lightweight softshell, breathable, and holds up surprisingly well. I used these on Mt. Rainer for everything besides the final summit where I threw on hardshells over them. On the way down, I slid on my butt in summer conditions and did not get wet until the very end. They dried quickly and are a great option for something more active/light where you don't expect heavy wind or wet conditions. I've got an Arcteryx softshell pant that I retired for these and have no regrets.

Two Issues But Otherwise a Solid Outdoor Pant

I've used these extensively on hikes and climbs in the Northeast over the past year and a half and they are durable and effective in a variety of conditions. That being said, there are two features I do not like. First, the belt system is a case of reinventing the wheel. It is similar to velcro but far less effective, and I find it coming off frequently. Moreover, there are no belt loops, so you have to use this system. Second, there are small metal hooks that attach the bottom of the pant to your shoelace. They are designed to keep your pants from riding up your legs, but I do not have this issue regardless of if they are hooked, and more often, they are rather uncomfortable, irritating the ankle. These pants perform well; however, I cannot recommend this product to others with the two flaws mentioned above.
