    There is no trail.

As time goes on, approaches are getting the trail maintenance they need to avoid erosion, but there are still plenty of unkempt trails with slippery scree, roots to trip over, and large boulders to hop over. When an approach like that is standing between you and your climb, the Mammut Men's Alnaska Knit Low Approach Shoe prevails. It has the lightweight flexibility that demanding terrain calls for, so you can land on one foot and dodge a root with the other. Underfoot, the Alnasca has a stable platform with cushy SofTech and an anatomic footbed to keep you moving for miles. The Michelin Rock Tech was specialized for alpine terrain.

Found this shoe to run tru to size. ie, I am a 10 on the foot measuring thing and have a pretty standard medium width foot. The size 10 fits great. Love the sock like entry into the show although it takes some getting used to to get it on. The loop on the top of the tongue makes it easy and after a couple days it's easy and feels great wearing it. Best thing I found out is the rubber is really sticky and you can trust Michelin knows their rubber.

Mammut does shoes right! I have always been a Mammut fan but unfortunatley it never seemed to fit my body to well. Their styles generally run a little more athletic and have longer arms than I use so I do tend to stay away from their clothes since they generally do not fit my body type. However, the shoes are the exception and I am stoked on the quality, and attention paid to these shoes during the manufacturing process. First off, I just want to state how bomber the Michelin tread is. Their tires keep your car in control at high speeds through varying conditions – gravel, rain, snow, ice. You can expect the same performance out of the rubber under your feet. This has given me unruly confidence to scramble up mountains that might have otherwise turned around from when wearing my Salomon X-Ultra Prime hiking shoes. Second, the fit is amazing for me. I generally wear Salomon because of their slightly wider last but the Alnasca’s fit me perfect. There is just the right amount of space in my forefoot and toes which surprised me. Although the toe box looks fairly narrow, I was surprised how well my toes were able to spread out, but also edge into cracks as I shimmy up steep faces. In terms of cushion, I was surprised to see how comfortable they were for being somewhat minimalistic. The padding has a unique pattern throughout the tongue and achilles that really provides just the right amount of support for extended use.

If you need a new approach shoe then give these a shot! You will be wondering why you didn’t try Mammut’s footwear earlier!
