    Fit is everything.

Contrary to popular belief, climbing shoes don't actually have to hurt. They need to fit snug, without any air pockets inside, but that doesn't mean they have pinch your toes until you can't bear it. That just makes for a nasty time, especially if you're a beginner, so find a shoe that fits. Unlike the red Negative version, Mad Rock's Pulse Positive Climbing Shoe has more volume and a longer length for beginners with bigger feet. It also features Mad Rock's grippy R2 Science Friction rubber at the toe, a unique mesh upper, and a shock-absorbing heel that feels great when you drop off boulder problems. With a medium stiffness, the Pulse Positive is perfect whether you're learning to climb in the gym or outside.

When buying the Pulse Positive I was going for a comfortable gym shoe. This shoe is pretty good but I expected a better fit. The flat design is comfortable, the stiff sole helps with small foot-holds but provides no feeling. The rubber seems more durable than old MadRock shoes and is reasonably sticky, can't complain here. The heel and mid-foot provide a great fit but the toe-box does not. I consider my feet to be high volume but the Pulse Positive leaves way too much empty space above the toes (length is fine). Additionally, the shape of the toe-box would better fit someone with a longer big toe. In hindsight, maybe I should have went for the Pulse Negative.

I haven't finished breaking them in but the sizing is about true to size, size 11 is comfortable for me, which is what I was going for. Maybe go down half a US size for a slightly snug fit. As a comparison, I wear a size 44.5 in Vapor V's (all day comfort), 12 in Blackwings (snug), and 11.5 Shamans (old version, super tight).
