Very glad I crossed paths with these boots. Recommended by my son who is an avid hiker and search and rescue worker. I am very tough on footwear and these boots have survived over a year of hiking and they are still going. I've "retired" them to be my work boots (I am a landscaper) and have bought a replacement pair for hiking. I hiked all 48 four-thousand footers in N.H (several more than once), many of the 52-with-a-view and countless miles of basic hiking trails. You won't be disappointed !!!

I just ordered my second pair of the Renegade. I probably put 750+ miles on my first pair; all of those miles were in the mountains and most of the time not on a trail of any kind. At least 150 miles were put on during a near month-long sheep hunt in rugged country in CO. The boots have been fantastic. They are super comfortable and so light-weight that my feet don't get tired like they have thru the years with heavier "mountain boots" that cost much more. Yes, some stitching has come apart over the last 75 miles or so but after the number of miles over rugged terrain I have on them there is no way I'm going to complain!

Waterproofing stopped working

waterproofing not working anymore, yearly I condition the leather with a waterproofing conditioner, but the gortex does not appear to work anymore. only had these boots for 4 years and was hoping I would wear them out before something like this happened. very disappointed. loved them when I first bought them tho. good fit, good traction. well made boot

In a word, these boots are very light, comfortable right out of the box! I really had next to no break in time. I wanted a great pair of boots for everything but serious back packing and these fit the bill! As usual, the Gore-Tex keeps my feet dry and the Vibram soles work well! Yes, buy these boots!

Thank you for the review, Rob!

The leather is good and will withstand harsh treatment. My only complaint about the boot is that the insole provides zero cusion and the outsole is rather stiff. So, for an old guy with bad sticks, wearing the boot as-is can be pretty painful. Using a cushioning insole would be good, but you'll have to size up slightly, or the fit will be tight.

Love these boots, I like the fit and the look and they hold up really well but they are pretty wide in the forefoot. My feet aren't narrow and still have a lot of room up front in these unfortunately.

So far these have been good boots. I have taken these on a couple backpacking trips and the comfort is great. I like the deep soles on these shoes that keep my feet safe on the rugged terrain.

what shoe size did you go with? did you find it to be true to size?

I am a professional forester working in Colorado. I like a lightweight boot that's sturdy and can handle being put through the wringer. My last pair of Lowa's lasted me two full field seasons before busting some seems. I was disappointed with the Renegades as i've busted the seems out of both sides of this boots within 6 months (half of which i was sitting at my computer working from the office). This boot fit great out of the box and was super light weight...just didn't hold up to the job. Maybe a good boot for someone hiking on trail...maybe Lowa can reinforce their stitching to make these puppies last.

Amazing boot

So badly wanted to give this boot 5 stars. They are incredibly well built. The lacing system with integrated tongue hugs your foot perfectly. The "flex" is perfect for a fast/light hiker. The soles are aggressive and deep for this style of boot. Might even be an all-time boot for me. Where it is lacking is the insoles. Really wish they would have added slightly more cushioning. I have already ordered replacements. Can't say how awesome this boot is! Really wish Lowa would have nailed the insole because they nailed everything else.

I wrote a previous review of these boots at ~ 200 miles of use... me, a Sierra wanderer. To add...While a great pair of boots initially, super comfy right out of the box, they fell apart after ~ 500 miles - Both toe caps suffered a delam , and the seam at the outside, (little toe area) split wide open. While a possible field fix w/ super glue, needle and thread, and shoe goo, for $250 expected more durability. Sent them back in to manufacturer and was told that these boots not designed for off-trail work, which surprised me as the many ads seen tout this as primo Sierra footwear...NOT ! No replacement help offered either. Great boot initially but realize they are a throw away after 1+ season.

Thanks for the honest review Mark. We need more of those.

I have tried out many boots over the years. These are the only ones I wore out and purchased the same brand and model again. My first pair did have some toe cap separation and I used several different glues before I found one that seemed to work. These boots never leaked in spite of all the snow step kicking and Pacific Northwest rain. They fit me (other people may differ) extremely well and I purchased size 10.5 just like all my other shoes and they were true to size. They are a bit more pricey than I would like, but I don't think it is wise to save money if it makes your feet less comfortable. Although I go with a hiking shoe in summer, these boots work well for the other 3 seasons. I think the construction, design, and quality are worth the price alone, not to mention the comfort. They are so comfortable I wear them around camp loosely laced instead of carrying Moccasins like I used to do. I treat them with an aquious Nick Wax product that seems to several trips (but they don't leak even when I am negligent in my treatments). I gave a bad review on my first pair because they leaked through the tongue gusset but I now treat that well and that problem has been forestalled. BTY, I purchased a pair of boots between my two Renegade purchases and returned them because the Renegades were so much more comfortable: and I was suffering from separation anxiety without my Renegades.

I bought these boots 2 years ago on my way to work in Yellowstone for a summer. I could not be more happy with them. Comfortable, durable, waterproof, stylish. Everything you want in a great backpacking boot. The break in time was short and they were comfortable even while I was breaking them in. They fit true to size and you can tighten them up in all the right places to ensure no blisters and a comfortable fit. I have put hundreds of miles on these now and when I have to retire them I will be getting another pair.

Love my Lowa boots! There was very little time needed to break these boots in and I have never had a blister or hot spot with them. Have owned and worn them for 3 years--1 full year I wore them daily working wilderness therapy. Only recently has the stitching begun to unravel a bit near the toes. They have gripped the red rocks of Utah well and also taken me across 25 miles of rough California coastal trails without issue. If submerged in water, my feet have gotten wet, however they do dry out rather quick. Fit is snug/comfy and I have narrow feet. If you are someone who is looking for an overall solid performing boot, renegades are a great way to go.

I've got a lot of hiking boots/shoes for different purposes but these are my favorite all round every day boots. I'm a 6' 200lb photojournalist that covers a lot of outdoor activities with worldwide travel and am always lugging heavy equipment. I bought these for a trip to Afghanistan in 2012 and have worn these daily around town during the fall/winter. I consider them a mid-weight. They required very little break in and have held up surprising well considering the amount of stitching. I have low volume size 11.5-12 feet and the 12s in these are on the wide side but a pair of Superfeet green insoles fills them out perfectly. They're not only good on the trail but the style works well with khakis and a sport coat for around town. I go with something heavier for long trips with a heavy pack and wear light hiking shoes during the summer, but I always look forward to putting these on and am back here to buy a new pair.

This is the third pair of Lowa boots I have owned. From their light weight hiking boot to a trekking boot, Lowa's have been the most comfortable boot right out of the box. These boots were also very comfortable right out of the box. No issues to report after several good hikes on rocky terrain. They breath well for an all leather boot. They have good traction on wet rocks through stream crossings. Since they are new the water beaded up immediately and did not soak the leather.

Does anyone one know if the leather on the Lowa Renegade's already has DWR (durable water repellant) on it? I just bought a new pair and was wondering if I should even bother applying waterproofing yet. If the boot already has some type of DWR coating, I'm waiting to wear it out before applying. If it doesn't have DWR, I'm planning on applying now. Anyone?

I couldnt find anywhere or anyone who specifically said it had a DWR coating. Usually when companies use a DWR coating they are super proud of it and post it everywhere so we can safely assume it was not. Either way it wouldnt hurt the boot at all, the Gore-Tex membrane should hold any rain at bay.

Thank you Bill. It's true that Lowa does not mention anything about DWR on their website(s) for this specific model, nor any other if I'm correct. I did run some water onto the leather and there seems to be some type of repellency going on. However, because Lowa hasn't mentioned anything about DWR I don't know if this is due to the leather's natural nature or if they've applied a very light coat of repellent of some sort already. Either way I've decided on wearing the boot out first before reapplying anything on it.

I noticed that some of the Lowa Men's Renegade boots have different styles of loops above the boot heel. Some have a smaller thinner loop with "Renegade" written on it and others have a striped loop that looks more substantial. Are these two different year models of boots? I wondered if one has upgraded features from the previous year....or are they the same boot? Thanks.

I have the version with the striped loop and it's probably the 2010 model. It's one model before the boot shown in the "official" picture of the boot on this website. The more telling feature in determining which model you're looking at is on the outside of the boot at the instep. If there is a molded plastic reinforcement, it's the latest version of the renegade.

Yes, that's definately a difference in that year's model.

Purchased the Zephyr Mid half size up from my normal running shoe size and they fit perfectly. Definately want to get a pair of these (or the Lowa Renegade LL mid, non GTX for warmer temps). I presume ordering a half size up again will be the way to go? Any ideas on sizing?

Sizes are usually pretty consistent throughout a manufacturers line of shoes/boots.

Normally wear a size 10 and the size seemingly fit me well, in the store. Unfortunately, after 300 Sierra miles I now have a black toenail from the pressure of these boots and wished I had bought a 1/2 size bigger.

What is the width like on these? I have a wide forefoot, but a regular heel. I usually buy wide width shoes, though medium width shoes and boots with a nice big toe box are a better bet when available. Specifically interested in the Lowas because of the polyurethane midsole. Sick of EVA midsoles going pancake on me after a few months.

Lowa's, while I don't have this model, tend to run a littler wider than other European boots - European boots almost always are smaller than American boots. The toe boxes are larger than most in my experience as well.

They seem to run fairly true to size (D width) with hiking sock, but they are also available in a wide for those with larger feet or major swelling.

I also have a wide fore foot and a heel that is more on the narrow side. These boots fit as well or better than any other boot I have, which includes Zamberlin, North Face and Asolo.

Write your answer here...Hi, Rev. I've been hiking daily in my new 9.5 Wide width Renegades and they are superb! I have feet like a duck: wide forefoot, narrow heel, and these fit perfectly right out of the box. The only boots I've ever owned that fit as well as these were my old OneSport black frankenboots that, after 4 resolings, were, sadly, just too beat up to resole again.
