    Step up.

If your first pair of cycling shoes have seen their share of miles and are starting to beg for retirement, Louis Garneau's all-new men's Platinum Shoes would be a good place to start your search for a replacement. With a slim silhouette and trickle-down technology from Garneau's pro-level models, the Platinum is a solid step up from an entry-level or mid-range model.

Garneau uses synthetic leather to shape the Platinum's contoured uppers, and instead of large mesh panels for breathability, it adds subtle slits in the synthetic leather backed by mesh to encourage airflow, maintaining the shoe's clean, sleek design. As on many of its top-tier shoes, the uppers on the Platinum are seamless, lessening the likelihood of hot spots and pressure points during long rides.

Another common complaint Garneau hopes to eliminate during your rides is heel slippage, so it adds a reinforced heel cup to the Platinum to make sure you don't lose valuable watts due to a wobbling foot. The top Boa dial paired with the lower hook-and-loop strap also contribute to the cause, allowing you to fine-tune the fit along the top of your foot for the right balance of security and comfort.

Anticipating that you'll be riding in a variety of temperatures, Garneau includes its Ergo Air Cool Stuff and Hot Stuff insoles with the Platinum shoes — both are ventilated and easily interchangeable. Underneath your foot, the Ergo Air II reinforced nylon outsole will work to dutifully transfer energy from your legs to the pedals throughout your pedal stroke.

Wasn’t really all that excited about the white color because I thought it would get dirty really easy, but went with it anyway as it was the color available in my size. Very impressed with them so far! And dirt or grime that gets on them I can just wipe off with my finger or a towel and they look new right out of the box again. Fit is really good, I wear a size 11(us) in majority of my shoes and went with a 45 for these. The BOA system works amazing and what sets these shoes apart from other brands in the same price range is the placement of the BOA tensioner. For this particular shoe it’s just off the side, which is nice when you tighten it down it’s not too much pressure on the top of your foot and actually tightens up across the whole shoe. Other brands have the tensioner centered at the top of the tongue putting pressure directly on that spot when you tighten them up.

Only downside was when I first tried to put SPD cleats on, I had a hard time getting in to the little flap that’s specifically cut for access. It was almost like they didn’t cut it all the way through at the factory, so I struggled with it for a little bit. But once I finally got my SPD-SL cleats, they bolted right up no problem.
