    All over again.

If the above image inspires a bit of déjà vu, that's because the Optimum Men's Bib Shorts are the successors to Louis Garneau's popular entry level bibs, the Signature Optimum. The Optimum drops "Signature" and adds a new panel composition; an updated, bevel-edged chamois; and a few functional details that improve fit and in-saddle convenience.

Of these, our favorites are the open-backed bibs—which increase ventilation and widen the overall footprint of the support—and the inclusion of a gel pocket just above the thigh band. Admittedly, we rarely use the latter for actually carrying gels outside of TT situations (hello, jersey pockets), but it makes a nice receptacle for spent gel packages, sparing your phone, spare tube, and CO2 cartridge a sticky situation.

    • Entry level bibs for the new cyclist or the weekend warrior
    • Updated paneling provides a more ergonomic fit in-saddle
    • Beveled-edge chamois eliminates irritating transitional ridges
    • Wide, compressive cuff holds securely without pinching
    • Thigh pocket holds ride fuel or spent gel packets
    • Open-backed design provides support while ventilating
    • Reflective details help keep you visible while sneaking in a pre-work spin

    Great Value

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 141lbs

These arrived the day before a century ride, so talk about putting them through their paces. They fit well, no shifting or chaffing. Love the thigh pocket for quick access to gels and Briks.
I'm fairly new to outdoor riding, and this was my longest ride so far, so I will put the mild tenderness in my derrière down to that rather than the shorts.

    Good bib for price

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Comfortable bib and good quality for the price. My only complaint after using them for a few rides is that the bibs come up high on your waist making it hot.

    Good for the price, but...

I spend more time on a trainer than I do outside these days. So I get LOTS of saddle contact chamois-time. First of all, the fit is great. They feel pro, and do not bind or do anything weird. I have a high end pair of LG bibs and these fit pretty much the same. The chamois is where the price difference becomes apparent.
I bought these thinking "oh, I don't need fancy bibs, just something to get me through a workout". This was a mistake. These chamois start to wear thin after about an hour. It is mediocre in shape and depth, especially if you have experienced high end bike bibs. I already own very nice Castelli and Garneau bibs, and these just don't compare in comfort.
That said, for less than half the price you get 80% of a fancy bib. The fit and finish are top notch. If you are getting in to the sport and just want to ride a bike without spending a kidney on fancy kit, these are great.

Sizing issues, good if it fits you

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Comfortable and well made, especially for the price.

I am 6" 1" 245, 38" waist. The size chart says "slim & standard fit" or "relaxed fit." BC describes the item as "form-fitting." So, I bought XL which it says is waist "36-38," but after a couple of uses, it seems too loose, and it is too long,

I have a tall torso and seem taller sitting compared to people of the same height. So, it makes no sense that it would be long for me. Further, I am a 38". So they should be at the tight side of fitting.

I wore them so I can't return them, but it was not a pleasant experience. Perhaps, a large would have done the trick.

Great fit but the padding could be bettr

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Have used these about 10 times already and I can say the fit is great, and I really like the side pocket for a key or something small. The padding could be a bit better it seems to get uncomfortable and dry the longer you ride.

    Like it

175 lbs, 5'10. true fit. ride 100+ miles a week. comfortable on 30+ mile rides. like the stash pocket. would order again. price is right.

    Awesome quality bibs!

I have been using these bibs for about 2 months now and i love them for their quality and all day comfort. I bought medium size and it fits me like a compression garment. Even though i have not used it much, but I like the little side pocket. i have used it to store a few dollars and pocket change for easy access to buy hydration and energy food on group ride stops. I would purchase this garment again and would recommend to my friends. Only down side i can think of is not pertaining to this particular product but the general design of bibs. you have to "strip" in order to pee. next time i buy these shorts it will be the verson that is not a bib.

    Good basics

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm a first time buyer of bike shorts and I was happy that these fit well and increased my comfort significantly (compared to plain old athletic shorts). I'm pretty tall and thin (6'4"; 32" waist) and got a Medium, these fit me well. I've read reviews saying that they ride up the leg and I'm not sure what they're talking about, as I haven't experienced that at all. I'd definitely recommend these shorts as a good starting point, but honestly can't say more than that given my limited experience.

    More than expected

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

So very glad I made this purchase. I always thought these bibs were kind of constrictive, they may look that way but the feel tells another story. I'm 5'8" and 150 lbs. and the size it's true (Small) I do frequent single track mountain trails with challenging turns and not once the bibs have gotten hung up on the seat while maneuvering the bike side to side on the downhill runs. very flexible and durable material, the chamois is not bulky yet comfortable enough.

Great everyday training bibs. Comfy for short and long rides. Will be my go to bibs from now on.

    Solid Bib Shorts

I ordered these bib shorts to replace an older pair, and seeing that they're listed as 'an entry level' bib I didn't have my hopes high. I've now worn these bibs a few times and I'm very pleased with their performance. The design and overall fit are more than what I expected. If you're considering these bibs for a replacement or as a pair to add to the arsenal then go for it - I don't believe you'll be disappointed. BTW - The fit (in my case, a Large) is true to size.
