    The leader of the pack.

On a dark and dusty trail, 50 miles from nowhere, lies a path of untouched dirt that is hungry for your tires. The only problem is, your 9-5 work week just doesn't give you the time to get there before dusk falls and the coyotes start to howl. Embrace your inner wild animal and fly down the mountain like a Tasmanian devil with the Light and Motion Taz 2000 bike light. With 2000 lumens you won't have a problem lighting up the night as you storm down the trail with a pack of wild dogs at your heels who have decided that the dirt-machine with two wheels is their new master. Let them worship your dust as you roll into berms at high speed and launch yourself down rock gardens.

Optical designed lens offers a flooded beam that illuminates the lower part of the trail closest to your wheel, and spotlight brings light to the dark world unfolding in front of you for better depth perception. Certified to be waterproof up to 1 meter, the Taz 2000 will be trustworthy on stormy nights just as much as the clear, crisp, star-coated nights of summer. It mounts easily to your handlebars or helmet with included mounting systems, and an internal battery pack will keep it rolling for up to 6 hours on low or 1.5 on high. When the battery is drained, simply plug it in to recharge and you'll be good to go for another adventure tomorrow night.

    Extend your riding season

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Taz 2000 is ultra bright and great for an all in one light that will let you blast your favorite trails at full tilt. If you are looking to get a couple hours of riding after the sun has set, this is a solid option. I like the 1 piece design and the relatively light weight is also a huge plus. I will toss it in my bag if there is the slightest chance that I won't be finished riding before the sun sets, and it is perfect for dawn patrol rides as well.
I will say this; if you are planning to do long night rides, I would suggest moving up to the Seca light. It isn't as convenient as the Taz but will last longer on a charge. But the Taz is simple and convenient and puts out more than enough light. Climbing in the low setting and cranking it up to high for the descents, I have never had an issue finishing a 2-hour ride on a charge.

Amazingly bright; mount is hard to use

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This a powerful light for those wanting to see easily in the dark and avoid being run over, but it has some obvious flaws.

It is very well made and unbelievably bright. It’s ‘car headlight’ bright, so if that’s what you’re looking for this is a great option. I notice that the claim is made for quite a bit longer runtime on full blast than I’m getting. Within 20 minutes the battery is already into the ‘red’ zone, which is a bit disappointing but not the end of the world. Even at the second tier, 1000 lumens of brightness, it lasts only about 60% of the time that the Knog PWR Trail does.

The mounting mechanism is not that great when mounted on a modern cross bike’s 31.4 mm handlebar. It’s not craptastically shabby like the Knog PWR’s, but it simply does not keep the light from inevitably pointing downward in just a few minutes of riding on typically rough American roads. I got around this by cutting a small section of old inner tube and wrapping it around the provided rubbery grip section that I had already stuck on the bar. This made it stay put but now it is extremely hard to pull the belt-buckle type piece of fastening-mechanism rubber far enough to catch on the first hole. Usable, but no one will ever say ‘hooray’ when it comes time to put it on the bike.

    Reference light for MTB

There are a handful of companies that make really good bike lights, but Light & Motion is universally regarded as one of the best by bike shop employees and experienced riders. There is a reason for this.

L&M is a cool independently owned company that specializes in cycling. Their lights are engineered, assembled, and serviced in the USA (near MTB epicenter Santa Cruz, CA). Great design, performance, experience, and quality.

Pros: For self-contained MTB lights, the Taz (great name) is one of the best looking and best performing lights available. I have found that a multi-bulb (wide throw) light is best to effectively illuminate the width of the trail and all the twists and turns involved in trail riding. This light features top-of-the-line Cree illumination and is extremely high quality all around.

3 hours of light at 1000 lumens will get you through most night trail rides. By the way, 1000 lumens is a lot of light!

Cons: None. Price? You get what you pay for.

      A great light.

      Arrives in Lock Out Mode

It may seem like the light does not work when you first get it, it does, it's just in lock out mode. Per L&M Instructions:

"Travel lockout mode is a way to lock your light off so that it will not accidentally turn on in your bag. This will help to preserve battery life. The lockout mode is crucial with the Taz because of the high lumen output. If the light accidentally turns on in your bag, it can generate enough heat to melt the lens.

To unlock press and hold the power button and secondary button down at the same time until the indicator light blinks green 3 times. Now your light is ready to be powered on. The indicator light is located in the power button."
