Does not harden upon impact

I learned the hard way that Leatt Air flex knee pads Do Not Harden upon impact. I experienced a quick over the handlebar Superman ejection after a pedal strike and my right knee impacted on a bowling ball size rock on the trail. The impact was hard enough to penetrate through the knee pad protection and it was painful. I thought that this material hardened upon impact like many other knee pads designed for mountain biking. That is not the design with these pads. They will become my go to garage auto working pads and or any other household repair work that requires kneeling on hard floors. In my opinion these pads do not provide total Protection from hard rock impacts if you take a bad fall while mountain biking. Caveat Emptor.

Started to come apart after first ride

Familiarity:

Bought these a few months ago to replace my old beat up g-form knee pads. First ride was really mellow mostly cross country trails and only about 7 miles. Somewhere during that ride the stitching on the back of the knee pad started to come apart. The rest of the knee pad has a few places where the stitching seems loose and could be seeing more spots unravel soon. Other than that they fit pretty well. They are a bit snug but the XL would likely have been slightly too large. Even being a tiny bit tight they were comfortable for the 7ish miles I’ve used them so far. Fingers crossed that they don’t completely fall apart soon.

Great Trail pads

I really like these pads. I bought them in 2020 to replace my TLD speed sleeves. That pad was really comfortable but would not stay in place during a sliding crash and I would end up losing skin. Also, I wanted something a little more stout than just the D30 between me and a whatever I'm crashing into next. The Airflex seemed to check the right boxes. It has been the right mix between comfort and protection for aggressive trail riding. It is light, stays in place and is comfortable. It breathes well on hot days. Let me point out its weaknesses, then you decide if it's right for your ride. - If I ride more than 20 miles in them I get a quarter sized abrasion rash on the top of my knee. So not a great pad for epic XC riders. But I can ride 10-15 miles a day back-to-back with zero problems. - If you plant it hard into a rock you will feel it. It is good protection but no substitute for a solid (hot) downhill pad. - It smells like the rest of my kit. I decided to write this review because yesterday I crashed into a tree. It hurt, but I walked away with no real injury - just the waffle pattern from the pad embedded in the skin over my knee. Should have been much worse. Thanks Leatt!!
