    A whole different class.

For its premier mountain offering, Lake used top-shelf materials and technologies to build one of the finest bike shoes available. From the soft, durable, kangaroo leather uppers to the carbon fiber outsole, Lake didn’t mess around with the MX331. Of course, materials are only half the story.

Lake also poured its best technology into the MX331. For efficient power transfer, Lake shaped its carbon fiber sole with its CFC Race Last. The outsole uses Lake’s “cleat pockets” and modular rubber treads for traction. Closure is handled by the BOA Push/Pull retention system. BOA provides an unlimited range of volume customization, a complete lack of pressure points, and a weight reduction of nearly two-thirds, compared to traditional systems. Inside, you’ll find a fully moldable heel cup to virtually eliminate heel slippage.

Great fit but does not work with SPD

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 11
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 170lbs

These shoes have the bets fit of any bike shoe I have ever owned. It is important to expect that these shoes, due to the rubber traction on the bottom, do not work with SPD cleats/XTR pedals without some Dremel work to trim back the rubber. This was confirmed by Lake. It is easy to do with the right tool and once it is done they may be the best bike shoe you will ever own.

    So far so good.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 10 and a half

First off, sizing. In Sidi's, Giant, Gaerne and Specialized I'm a 44. I bought these in a 44.5 after trying on a friends pair of lakes in that size in his road shoe. These fit perfectly. The shoes feel great. Downside is a single Boa. Both my last MTB shoes and my current road have 2 dial adjusters so you can adjust tension separately, these, you just have to wrench on them to get everything tight. Durability of the leather may be questionable. I've used these for a few hundred miles, and already the leather on the inside of the shoe has crank rub. I mainly ride single speed, so crank rub is always an issue. Stiffness is great on these shoes. The entire sole is one big chuck of carbon so these are as stiff as high end road shoes.

    My Favorite Shoes

I have the 'cross version of these shoes, which are completely different than the mountain version. They are extremely light, stiff and comfortable thanks to the thermo-molding. I've had mine a little over two seasons and the boa unit recently tore off the side of one shoe similar to what is shown for the mountain version below. I figured they were toast, but Lake steered me to Boa for a free and quick repair, even though my shoes were slightly beyond the warranty period. Yes it would be great if this didn't happen but they are great shoes nonetheless.

Great Shoe + Excellent Customer Service

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Purchased the Black/Red version of these in 2014.

Loved this shoe until the Boa detached from the side of the shoe (See Todd Munson's review, below). Was past the Competitive Cyclist warranty return period (1 year), so I thought I'd try contacting Lake directly. Got a reply email from Lake within minutes with directions on how to get a repair through Boa. Boa was equally responsive and provided details on a no-charge repair.

My only knock on these shoes would be durability, particularly with the Boa integration with the shoe, but considering the excellent experience that I had with both Lake and Boa, I'd certainly consider Lake as a top option for future shoe purchases.

    Different Shoes...

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Lake did it's customers a disservice by giving two very different shoes the same model name. The lighter orange/black shoe is their 'cross-specific version with minimal tread, lighter weight, and a different fit from the other version that is more oriented toward mountain biking. I own both versions. The 'cross version is extremely stiff, comfortable and light, and so far excellent. The mountain version are a bit narrower, noticeably heavier, still stiff, and so far problem-free but not quite as sweet as the 'cross version.

Most comfortable shoe that I hate

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Shoe fits great but for me it the grip on the bottom makes it more difficult to clip in and the BOA broke after less then 20 hours of use.

Most comfortable shoe that I hate

Broke within 30 hours of use.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Boa unit ripped itself right out of the shoe. Until that happened, they were mostly great. Definitely avoid these no matter how low the closeout price goes. Due to Lake's lack of customer service it took a full 39 days for Competitive Cyclist to get a warranty claim approved.

    great shoe

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got a pair of these recently and absolutely love them. They are very comfortable, light weight and just stiff enough in the toe to dig through the muddy trenches of cross racing with ease. The kangaroo leather is very soft and gives the shoe a glove like fit and the boa system really confirms to the geometry of your foot. If you have the means I highly recommend picking these up.

Not so for women's shoe. They run small. My step-daughter is a size 8 (39) and had to go up to size 9 (40) to fit her correctly. She normally wears an 8 so this was a surprise when they showed up and were way too small. Also, likely you will be wearing thicker socks with these shoes, so might want to consider half a size anyway, IMHO.
