    Uncomfortable Tongue

    I really wanted to like these and it was tough to return them.

    On first impressions, it appeared to be a great show. Dual Boa, lightweight, carbon soled, etc. The sizing from Lake's site was pretty spot on. I traced both feet out on paper; 297mm for the right and 294mm for the left. I didn't add 5mm like they recommended and am glad that I didn't as they would've been half a size too large if I did. I have wide feet at 109mm and these were perfect width.

    However, some others experienced the same issue with the tongue digging into the top of their foot and I was no different. Tightening down both dials made the top of the shoe dig into the tops of my feet surrounding my ankle. I'm not sure if it was just the way my foot was shaped, but definitely a drawback for me personally. Additionally, the heel cup was significantly looser around the heel as some other shoes I've tried. Granted I'm sure this could've been solved with some heat, but since I was returning them, I didn't see the point.

    If the tongue was not an issue, I'm sure forming the heel cup with some heat would've solved my only issue with the shoe.

    Quality worth the price

    Love them. I don't normally spend this much, but the quality does justify it. Leather interior, not fabric. I had been buying Giro MTB shoes, but the heels kept coming apart, and ratchet buckles kept breaking. The Boa seems flawless so far, and the interior heel leather seems very durable. I wear these with Eggbeater pedals for all my riding: road and mixed terrain. I added a second insole for 3/4 of the foot, to decrease the volume inside the shoe, but keep room in the toes. I just did a big wet mixed "event" ride, and the shoes don't hold water like a sponge (like previous shoes). Hardly notice they are wet. I wear 9.5 to 10 in running shoes; the 43.5 is a good fit.

    One of the few CX-specific race shoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    Tossed my old shoes after 10 years, and I wasn't going back to buckles and straps—mud clogged them completely. While BOAs are pretty standard, what drew me to these was the fact that they're specifically designed for CX racing. They're like a nice road shoe plus treads and ready for mud.
    The (real) leather upper is pliable enough to be comfortable, but so far tough enough to fend off scrapes and washes down easily. It's also very warm for winter, though there's a bit of mesh and venting cutouts. Haven't tried these in an early season race yet. Inside there's very little padding, but you don't need it with how comparably soft these are, and it's less to get saturated in the wet.

    The carbon sole plate is stiff, much more so than my old MTB shoes, and they feel a lot more connected with the pedal. I do get a bit of heel lift while running, but they do flex enough to run without feel like they're getting sucked off my feet. Essentially they're built knowing that most of the time, you're pedaling, but just enough flex to get through runups. No complaints on the tread. Several sets of toe spikes are included.

    As for fit, they're roomy with a wider toe box, but tighter in the heel. I used the fit guidelines from their site and first bought a 45 (my foot length is around 28cm), but that turned out too big, even with thick socks. Sizing a half-size down was still more than enough to wear winter socks and still wiggle my toes, and not be bottoming out the laces. They fit a lot like road shoes with a little extra volume up front for running, but being fairly low-cut, not best for extended off-the-bike time.

    Lastly, the lacing system just works. The replacement pair I received had the two-way BOA knobs for adjusting looser if need be.

    Bottom line: they're pricey, but they're bombproof, mud proof, and pressure-washer proof. Well worth it if you do CX exclusively, maybe less so for general trail riding. As far as I can tell, the Supercross model is the same as the regular MX237, save for the abrasion-resistant leather.

    I've spent about 15 years as a wrench in various shops, and have had the luxury of trying on many different shoes before purchasing, so buying unfamiliar shoes on line is always sketchy. That said, it was time to purchase a new pair as my Sidi's fell victim to my new puppy. I didn't like the reviews I saw with Sidi's new stuff so I decided to look at other options. Lake stood out, specifically the Supercross. Great reviews and, damn, they look pretty rad. They checked all the boxes for cyclocross, MTB, etc., but how was the fit? Well, I'll just say that out of the box, these shoes are a dream. They blow away any Sidi shoe I've ever had, and I've had quite a few. The only other shoe that came close to fit were some old Carnacs from years ago. The Boa retention system is awesome. Plenty of room in the toebox and ample volume for my not-so-narrow feet. I've only put about 70km in these so far, so I can't yet speak for longevity, but the leather they use seems pretty rugged. Nice stiff carbon sole without any hotsopts. Great shoe. I'm now a Lake convert.

    Initial Impression

    Not as comfortable as the standard MX237

    My first pair of the standard MX237 was showing some wear so I thought I would "upgrade" to the MX237 Supercross. The Supercross looks awesome and the tough leather sounds great in theory, but the comfort really drops compared to the standard MX237. I had issues with the top edge of the buckle/strap cutting into the front of my ankle through the very top edge of the tongue. Check the photo for clarification of the buckle/strap issue. The buckle/strap isn't as pliable as the leather on the standard MX237 and it cuts into my ankle. The standard leather moves when needed and is much better. This the only thing I could find wrong with the shoe. It may be much better on someone with a different foot shape than mine. It could also be something that breaks in very quickly and gets comfortable. But, I wasn't willing to check and see after knowing how comfortable the standard MX237 was.

    I tried the MX237 Supercross as well (been riding a Giro shoe before). I also noticed that it was uncomfortable at the top edge where it met my ankle - and has to return it for that reason. Just not comfortable with that cutting into my ankle.

    Shawn, how long did the standard MX237's last before they got to the point where you had to replace them? Apart from this rubbing issue how was the comfort of this material compared to the standard leather? It seems much stiffer so does the lack of stretch and movement make for the overall comfort to be worse as well? Thanks.

    Lake's website lists this show as coming with IP1 BOA dials, which offer tighten/loosen function that L5 dials do not. Can I get confirmation before ordering which dial is on this shoe? I am either looking for the Standard or Wide in 45.

    I own these shoes and the Boa Dials, twist both directions to loosen and lighten. They also pop out for a free wheel effect to take them off. Is this helpful? Sorry I do not know the exact Boa models
