Why We Like The TX4 Mid GTX Approach Boot

We always want our foot to feel prime on the climb, but sometimes there are miles of steep switchbacks, rough rocks, and twig-riddled trails. That's where the La Sportiva Men's TX4 Mid GTX Approach Boot comes in handy. It has the stiffness, stability, and support needed for hauling a lot of climbing gear over rough terrain, and GORE-TEX Extended Comfort applies reliable waterproofing just in case we come across mud or light showers. Extended Comfort also enhances breathability, and Vibram's MegaGrip sole features an Impact Brake System for a safer descent.

Best hiking shoes

I love these shoes. The most consistent hiking boots I have owned. I have hiked hundreds of miles in the . I own three pairs. Very durable. Good in snow.

Is there a better hiking boot?

This is my second pair. It has good support and the laces really help with my flat feet to get a good fit. Roomy in the toe box but firm support the heel.

Best waterproof approach shoes

I recently used these for three weeks in South America, including the Huayhuash alpine circuit in Peru and numerous training hikes in the Cascades beforehand. They hike great, scramble great, fit great, look great, and proved to be fully water-proof up to the ankle. The eyelits are a little weird, but it's easy to let that slide with all other benefits. I have a narrow ankle and wide toe box, and these boots fit perfectly. Sometimes tightening the ankle took a few re-tightening efforts, but there are ways to lace the shoe to streamline fit. I also have the low-cut version, and am blown away by the waterproofing and burliness of the mid-top version. The rubber wears a bit quickly, but it's also super sticky and climbs great, so you're always going to get that balance with a well-performing rubber (performance comes at a cost of durability, and high-durability does not perform well). I'd recommend this mid-boot 100 times over for any wet approach, especially if bushwhacking. If your approach is a bit cleaner, on-trail, and more technical, or you are simply more weight-conscience, go with the low-cut version.

Decent Approach Shoe

Why does la sportiva choose to not simply make an all black version of this shoe.. It is a great hiking shoe for work but they have to make it only available with strange color patterns.. Please fix the eyelets and sell this shoes as an all black version as well. please.

Comfortable Mid Top

All day comfort even on high mileage days, and sticky rubber sole, what’s not to like?

I?m writing this while actually shopping for another (3rd?) pair. Between them and Guide Tennie GTX Mid there aren?t many options out there for me - an ankle support and a good grip for scrambling are my major reqs... I?ve replaced standard laces with some heavy duty construction grade ones from amazon - they will last longer than another two pairs of shoes. Perhaps because i was gentle with them - this pair survived 3 spring/summer/fall seasons of occasional High Sierra weekends. overall I?°ve put somewhere north of 500 miles on them, may be a little less. cons observed: - durability - as many people?ve noted, the rubber is optimized for grip, not longevity. I might try to resole them but something tells me it won?t be possible at this stage. - the lacing hooks tend to break off, they are made of some metal that bents easily, it only takes a few dings… i guess I woul°d replace them as well or convert to eyelets - I actually wish they had a non-gtx alternative as summers are dry and hot here in California, so giving priority to breathability over waterproofing may attract some additional customers…

Best Sportiva approach shoes ever made

These are my favorite approach shoes, full stop. I love the ankle support and the GTX treatment, they keep my feet dry on wet approaches. The toe box is nice and roomy, but you can still get a good fit to be on technical terrain. They're comfortable straight outta the box. The ,metal eyelets in the product photo has been upgraded (see my photo). The eyelets are now flush so it doesn't snag on things anymore. Can't recommend these shoes enough. They're quite the head turner too since you don't see them too often in the wild. Midtops 4 lyfe. Sizing: I always size up 1/2 in sportiva approach shoes because I think they run just a smidge small, at least for me. (8.5W/40 street, and I wear 40.5 so my toes don't feel cramped).

Why no women's version in the US?

I would love to buy a women's version of these, but they aren't available in the US! I thought we were past the days of women getting a smaller selection

Critical Flaws

I really like the comfort, technical feel and style of this boot. Those are the only redeeming qualities. The lacing system with nylon loops either fails or it shreds your laces. One of the top lacing cleats broke off after less than a year of use.

These have been my favorite approach shoes!

I was looking for a hightop gore-tex hiking boot for approaching climbs, and this boot has been perfect. I love these because they give great support when you lace them tight, but also open up wide for easy on and off. At the crag I leave them unlaced and the slip on and off with ease. They started off a bit narrow (I have a very wide foot), but after a couple days, they've stretched to fit my foot incredibly well. I did cut out the arch from the footbed to make it fit a bit better. I'm super glad that I ordered a half size bigger than my street shoe. Size 10 normally, ordered size 44.
