Why We Like The Trango Tech Leather GTX Mountaineering Boot

The La Sportiva Trango Tech Leather GTX Mountaineering Boot bridges the gap between being a backpacking and mountaineering boot that helps us confidently tackle all types of terrain. Its low profile sole and midsole allow technical footwork and edging capability when climbing easier graded routes, while also offering semi-automatic crampon compatibility for glacier travel.

The leather upper and GORE-TEX membrane keep your feet dry and protected across mountainous terrain, and the gusset free tongue construction increases comfort for long miles on the trail. Additionally, the Trango features a 3D Flex system that promotes precise support on rough terrain and a to-the-toe lacing system that delivers a precise fit for enhanced control. The latter's appreciated always, whether you're climbing a new route or traversing technical terrain.

It’s too bad La Sportiva isn’t consistent with their sizing. I have another pair of their boots same size that fit perfect. These are about a half a size small. Too bad, I had plans for these boots…

I really really wanted to love these boots but they didn't fit my foot very well. I wear size 11M US in most footwear types. Running shoes up half a size. I knew boots can be tricky to size sometimes so I ordered 44.5 and 45. The 45 was too loose to when i had it cinched down, my foot was sliding around enough to make me concerned for blisters on a long outing. The 44.5’s were too narrow in the toe box, pinching off circulation too much for me. Outside of fit, these boots seemed like a great price point for a hybrid backpacking/summer mountaineering boot. They definitely felt secure and stiff underfoot. I just wish they fit me better.

I bought these for my first mountaineering boots and they have performed well in relatively mild conditions. The boots have enough flex that there is no issues using them on decently long approaches, but are still stiff enough to perform on steep snow and short scrambles. They kept my feet toasty on chilly days but my toes began to get pretty cold when the temp dropped to around 10F one evening hiking into camp at about 12,500 ft. All in all, great boot if you are looking for an affordable option to try the sport out or if you plan on sticking to well established routes in the lower 48 during early spring/late fall. If you plan to cross a glacier, you may want to look for a sturdier boot.

Lighter and faster than other Mountaineering Boots

I use this for crushing 14er's. My feet used to ache so much before I got a pair of these much stiffer boots. They flex plenty in the midfoot for the approach and support whatever weight I need to carry with ease. The lacing system and fit is ideal for my wider foot, as a Mens US 10.5 I found the European 45's to be perfect.
