Mutant Trail Running Shoe

The La Sportiva Women's Mutant Trail Running Shoe is the next stage of evolution for the high performance trail running shoe world. Enhanced upgrades include the FustionGate lacing harness that uses high frequency reinforcements to wrap the breathable airmesh upper securely around your foot. La Sportiva also added its SpyralTongue for an even better fit, and a four-way stretch scree guard protects your foot without inhibiting mobility.

Underfoot, the Mutant sports a supportive injection-molded EVA midsole with TPU for a touch of stability. FriXion XF rubber makes sure the sole stays super sticky, and V-Grooves grab everything on the trail while the Impact Brake System lives up to its name. This shoe also features a high-cut ankle at the cuff for added protection as well as a secure fit.

Two years later...

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Going on 2+ years with these shoes, and still love them! As i mentioned in my original review, these shoes are slightly narrow through out the arch and toe box - so I recently removed the insole and it totally fixed my issue! By removing the insole I was able to create more space while still keeping the perfect length fit. After a couple years of mild trail running, backpacking, and going through snow, mud, and river crossings these shoes are going strong!

Great trail shoes for desert, soil, snow

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These shoes were stiffer than anything I've trail run in before, which initially took a little getting used to. I decided to try and accelerate the break-in period by wearing them as my approach shoes for a month or two, which worked wonders. They now fit great, and are super supportive on rocky trails, grippy on soil and trail-snow, and keep my feet happy for long days. Love them!

Thanks for the awesome and helpful review, Jennifer! Glad to hear you're loving these :)

Great for the Trail

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I've been eyeing these shoes for my trail running for a long time, finally pulled the trigger on the purchase and couldn't be happier. I'm still breaking them in but some initial thoughts--they're stiffer than some of my "natural fit footbed" shoes but once you break them in they provide excellent support & comfort, and I've heard great things about their durability. My foot is medium-narrow so from a fit and performance stand point, this works better for me than my relaxed-natural fitting running shoes, providing quick response and my foot does not feel cramped--even after a few miles. On rock slabs and trail, the grip is amazing. Definitely recommend these shoes! True to size.

Lovely trail shoe for technical terrain

These are my second pair of La Sportiva trail runners and are perfect for technical, muddy, steep terrain. I recently wore these during a trail half in the San Juans which had mud, rain, and some hail. Felt very stable and comfortable the entire race. I've not had any issues with blisters though the higher ankle support works best with higher thicker socks. Great cushioning and tread, held up well in the rainy and wet conditions. I've also worn these in warmer sandy desert conditions and have not had any issues. These are currently my go-to distance trail shoe. The ability to tuck the laces is nice, especially for racing and long runs. They do tend to run a little on the small side. Best to try on a pair of Sportivas in person to know your size for sure.

Trail Mutant

These La Sportivas are now my go-to running shoe for technical terrain. I recently ran the Rut 50k (a very technical mountain running race) in them and did not sustain any blisters. They have just the right amount of cushion and the tread is perfect (with large enough lugs and vibram soles for gripping rough terrain). I must mention, however, that it took awhile for me to break them in initially. Already thinking of purchasing a second pair.

Not my first LaSpo purchase, I've worn 38,5 for years, first pair that's felt a solid 1.5-2 sizes too small. Sad they didn't fit because the colors are true to photo

Looooove!

I just barely started getting into trail running the past 2 years or so, before this I was using a 0-tread Nike gym shoe. So the mutant is really my first trail running shoe! Running for the first time in these shoes were so amazing! I never slipped once and could run down the hill in confidence. The first time I took them out it had actually rained the day before so the trail was quite muddy in some areas, I still never slipped. After reading reviews that these run small, I was worried about what size to get so I ordered both the 37.5 and the 38. I am a standard 6.5 and the 37.5 fit so perfect! They are slightly narrow but not uncomfortable. I really like the flap to tuck the laces under neath so you don't have to worry about the laced coming undone. The shoe do go up a bit higher on the ankle, but the straps are not an uncomfortable material in any way.

I bought these shoes to replace my old trail runners. I love how they fit my narrow foot. The laces tuck out of the way and they provide tons of support for my high arch. I can't wait to get more use out of these!!

I orginally ordered and returned these because I thought they may be too heavy. After running in a different trail shoe for a few months, I couldn't stop thinking about these and re-ordered them. Boy can I say I'm glad I did. My high arch and narrow foot could not be happier. I find that the shoe comes up just high enough, but doesn't hit my ankle in a way that is uncomfortable. The laces are a bit short, and that would be the only drawback to these. Fabulous shoe, and incredibly durable and well made.

These are awesome. Ordered the to replace my old shoes. The lacing is a little bit confusing the first time but it is a genius idea to stuff them underneath the cover. I have got a mini ankle blister once from them, I would recommend wearing higher socks than ankle socks so you can prevent this. I normally wear a size 6 in shoes but with this shoe I went up a half size and glad I did. The 6.5 works perfectly! I normally wear them for running but I have worn them hiking as well. They still look brand new after all the dirt I have been in. Size up a half size.

I love these trail running shoes so much! I didn't want a heavy hiking boot, so I bought these for a weekend canyoneering trip in Zion, and I couldn't be happier with how they performed. The hike was 12 miles with a mix of dry land hiking and waist deep water wading. 10 minutes after taking them out of the box, I was ankle deep in mud, and after rinsing them when I got home, they look brand new! The rubber bottom performed great in the mud and water, and the fit was perfect. I had to take the soles out for a few hours to fit some neoprene booties, but without the sole, that fit was also perfect. The only thing that I don't like about the shoes is that the laces are kind of short, and kept coming untied, but other than that, I love these shoes!

Backcountry comfort!

Absolutely love these shoes! I have slightly screwy feet thanks to nerve damage from an accident, and so it's hard for me to find shoes that are comfy and don't give me blisters. The Mutants are perfect! I just used them on a 55+ mile backpack through Evolution Basin in the Sierra Nevada. I had zero blisters and foot issues while covering on and off trail terrain (and big mile days). These shoes are super grippy too! Love them!

These are awesome trail run shoes for people with narrow feet! I've always had an issue with trail shows being just a little too wide for my feet and these are the only shoes that I feel fit me. They fit like a glove while having fantastic support.
