Kataki Climbing Shoe

The Katana is undoubtedly one of La Sportiva's many classic shoes due to its combination of all-day comfort and technical prowess, and the Otaki's aggressive attitude tackles some of the toughest climbs out there. But where do you turn when you need a comfier shoe to climb long, tough routes like the last few pitches on Moonlight Buttress or basically every sport climb in Greece and Spain? The Women's Kataki Climbing Shoe balances the Katana's comfort with the Otaki's aggression so you can jam into tight cracks, project overhangs, and spend a day at the boulder fields without ever taking the shoe off. It features La Sportiva's tried-and-true P3 construction for long-lasting aggression, and the new S-Heel optimizes the fit so you can heel hook everything. The Vibram XS Grip2 sole has a stiffer feel than the Otaki, and it lasts a lot longer for climbers on a budget―which is basically every dedicated climber out there.

True to size

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
38.5
Height:
5' 6"
Weight:
110

I mistakenly listened to some reviews that said to size down. Stick to your true size so you font have to pay return fees and wait even longer for the shoes.

great "1 shoe for all"

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
37

For reference, I use Miura (also from LaSportiva) on sport routes and Katana for the gym and long outdoor sessions (multipitch or longer routes). After several days of obsessive specs search, I decided to buy the Kataki to replace my old Katana (after >8y and several resoles, they earned retirement). I am very happy with the purchase! +comfort: virtually no break in required and the lace system is great for adjusting the fit, I don't feel the need to take them off as soon as I finish a route (while I do with both Miura and Solutions): often I just untie them and keep them on when belaying. +precision: the sole is rigid, enough to assist you in lifting/pushing on small footholds even after a tiring session. the sole is slightly downturned and pointy, which makes it a good in-between aggressive/crack shoes. overall, they are a great shoe for all needs, from gym to long routes and sport routes. I would recommend it 1) if you are looking to go from an entry level to a your first "precision" shoe or 2) if you own aggressive & sensitive shoes already and you are looking for something to complement them with a "precise yet comfortable" shoe for long sessions sizing: I got the Kataki in the same size as my other La Sportiva shoes (37 - which is one full-size down from my running/street shoes, 38). So for me, the fit is "true to size" with respect to other climbing shoes.

My favorite shoes - until they fall apart

These shoes are a dream - fit my narrow feet precisely, perform on almost all types of climbs, stick to rock and wall like glue, and aren't as painful for long-term wear as you'd expect from the shape. I would use these shoes exclusively if not for one thing - the toe wears through very very quickly, in the exact same spot every time. I'm on my third pair, and always the same defect. (My other shoes do not wear in this spot, so I can rule out poor technique.) For the price, I expect to be able to get some decent wear out of a pair of shoes - and the way these degrade, I can't even get them resoled.

My favorite shoe

This is my all time favorite shoe for climbing. I wear them for big walls, sports action, and all of the pebble wrestling. Seriously - I live in these shoes!

Precise fit, moderate aggression.

I bought these after loving the otakis, but wanted a more dialed in fit, particularly for heel hooks. Fits my foot like a glove, and took minimal breaking in. Would size a half size up from the otaki.

My new all time favorite climbing shoe

This is my second pair of Katakis. I have hard to fit feet: low volume, long, and narrow. I've found lace ups fit me the best. I was a long time Miura lace up user (I have two pairs of those too), until I discovered the Katakis. They are extremely comfortable yet fitted, and can edge very well yet can also smear decently. The Katakis are my new favorite shoe, and I used them so much indoors and outdoors that I'm due for a resole (which is why the second pair was necessary). If you want a shoe that performs well across the board and is comfortable, look no further.

Love this!

These are my first climbing shoes and they were not difficult to break in. My sneaker size is US 5.5 (female) and I sized down by .5 for the Kataki.

Poor quality!

These are my second pair of Sportivas and I do both indoor and outdoor climbing. I was really excited about these and they are the perfect moderate shoe for someone who wants to get more serious about climbing without the pain of too much aggression. However, as with my previous pair of Sportivas (Tarantulace), they seem to wear down way faster than other shoes. I undid the laces to properly clean them after a particularly sweaty session, but the laces just fell apart when trying to re-lace them. Now I can't even get the lace back through the hole without destroying the whole lace. I've had these for about 2 months and climb around 3 days a week, so maybe this is just natural wear, but I expected more for the price!

Awesome shoes all around

I bought these for my wife for her birthday and she absolutely loves them. They edge incredibly and are very comfortable once they break in. Amazing shoes.

Great all rounder!

Heard good things about these and they definitely lived up to the hype! These may replace my Muira laces which I have worn for years (and still love). Sensitive edging right out of the box, super snug yet sensitive heel cup and they are incredibly adaptable from cracks/slabs, to steep terrain and technical edging. I wear a 37 in the Wms Solutions and a 37 is perfect in these. Really stoked, highly recommend
