great pair of pants for cooler weather

I am a big Kuhl fan, their products consistently show good design, great materials, and high-quality construction. These pants do not disappoint. Typical Kuhl freedom of movement and comfort. The material is a fairly tight and heavy canvas-like fabric, which has a great finish and should hold up well as well as providing good protection from winter winds on my frequent hikes here in the high desert of northern New Mexico. My only disappointment is partly my fault, I've gained a few pounds around the middle and I find that the snap closure pops open. There isn't a secondary button closure as on some Kuhl pants. Good motivation to crank up the hiking and get rid of a few extra pounds, but i wish the closure had a bit more staying power.

    Nice product

I‘ve had these pants as work pants and general every day pants for at least a year now. I’ve worn them hundreds of times and the actual pants themselves are hanging in great. The material is tough and withstands tears very well. The cuffs are the most worn. Overall the pants hold up great and “patina” well in the wash. My greatest issue with these pants is the pockets. They were torn to shreds in the first month! The right pocket that I keep my wallet in now has a hole at the pitting that I can fit 4 fingers through. The left pocket has a two finger hole near the top. For pants made of such resilient material I expected the pockets to be able to handle some use! The first tear was in the left pocket where I kept my small light. I believe that the material in the pockets is very susceptible to abrasion from objects in the pockets. Honestly the pockets are the only thing keeping me from buying more pairs. That said if you don’t plan to wear these every day or don’t have “sharp” objects in your pockets you should definitely try a pair.

I bought these as a gift for my boyfriend and he loves them! He has worn them casually with t shirts and they also look great with nicer shirts! The fabric is really great and soft as well.

I have 3 pairs of these pants, and I'm about to buy another pair. I work in the southern Appalachians with at-risk children and adolescents. I have worn these pants doing everything from playing pick-up baseball to repelling to mountain scrambling. They have served me well in all of these circumstances, in addition to meetings with parents and teachers, dressed up with a button down shirt. They are all that I wear, at this point. My line of work is not known for its high salaries, so I take great care in choosing the clothing and gear that I purchase. That said, I think long and hard about spending $78 for a pair of pants. But, as my career demands quality, I have to say that I am very pleased with this particular purchase.

Also, I would like to add that for many years, I chose to wear pants made of synthetic fabrics, believing that they were lighter and cooler, thus better for wear in these old mountains. That changed after I had two different pairs of synthetic hiking pants begin to melt while I was cooking over an open campfire. The 98% cotton 2% spandex blend in these Kuhl pants has eliminated that problem, and while they may seem a bit heavier, at first, they have become cooler and more comfortable than synthetics, to me, with continued wear. I would strongly recommend these pants to anyone who spends any real time outdoors, or who is looking for a quality product.

Further, if one follows the washing directions---inside out, cold water, and low heat dryer setting---the issues with wear lines become negligible.

Not holding up as I would hope

    • Fit: True to size

These pants fit great, but I think the fit is the only quality aspect of these pants. The pocket where my wallet and cellphone are showing imprints and gradually have produces holes. The bottom of the pants have began to rip as well. The pants are now a year 1/2 old and are simply not holding up.
I've had several pairs of carhartts that I've had for longer and have held up much better than the Rydr pants.

Incredibly paractical design! Fits my iPhone 7 with a case perfectly in the smartphone side pocket!! Definitely order again in a different color!!

    Poor quality

The pants have a faded crease down the lower legs that keeps getting more defined with each wash, almost as if they have been ironed down the center. I contacted Kuhl customer service and they simply blew off my email, stating that the pants have unique wear patterns due to the type of fabric. Poor response.

    Poor quality

I have about ten pair of these as they are the most comfortable pants that I have ever worn. Unfortunately, about 2/3 of them are showing the exact same thing...in my experience, they wear like steel but that crease is pretty annoying.

I have had a number of rydr pants over a number of years and have found that they do best with hand washing. It's a bit of a pain in the @$$ but the wear patterns aren't as strong. They end up with small lines here and there but I use my dark colors for bow hunting so I don't mind the "character". I strongly recommend hand washing though!

Not as tough as you would expect

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Don't get me wrong, I own 4 pairs and am about to buy a 5th. They fit great. Not a huge fan of the snap button on the front, but I always wear them with a belt. I do a lot of walking for work (construction mgmt) so I like that the cut is relaxed just the right amount.
My oldest pair is 2 years old and they become tattered sooner rather than later. Front of cuff, back of cuff, back pockets, front pockets, seams at knee, crotch. All these places will wear through fairly quickly with use. Also, They fade quickly in the wash. Especially noticeable in the dark colors. I love the pants but it is annoying that its advertised as super durable. They might be, but you wont wear them if you have stringy fabric hanging off each wear spot.

    rough and tough

I use these pants for climbing in Indian. they are great for off-width climbing. they have lasted longer then any other pair of pants I have used before.

My husband is on a swat team and wore these pants for a week straight at a sniper school he attended. He had no issues with the front button though he wears a belt all the time. He owned and wore these pants before the school and after the first wash he did have the same fading problem that other people have mentioned. He noticed “lines” in his pants where they faded. There also seemed to be permanent creases in the pants if care was not taken to fold them. During his week long class he was crawling around cactus ridden ground and granite mountains. The pants held up extremely well and only had wear marks on the back pockets. There were small holes on the back pockets but he had hard rifle magazines in those pockets and was rubbing up against rocks so this was expected. He wants to get more pants like these but hoping KUHL fixed the fading and crease issue.

    KUHL pants are cool, man!

First off, these pants are super durable and will last you a long time. To me this is the biggest factor that makes them so great, as I'm very rough on my clothes and generally go through pants pretty quick. I got two pairs of these, and they're the only pants I plan on wearing for the next year at least.

The relaxed fit and articulated knees also make these pants great for mostly any outdoor activity (hiking, climbing, kicking it by the fire, etc)

The only issue I've found is that the snap-button pops open on its own pretty easily. Easy remedy, always wear a belt. This is a minor issue to me so I still give these pants 5 stars

    Great comfort and durability

These have been my go to pants for the last few years. They have the durability of jeans, yet are more comfortable and flexible. They look nice enough that I wear them to work as well. I like the cell phone pocket. The downsides I have noticed is that the darker colors do tend to fade on the creases and over time the bottom seam seems to wear in the front (most other pants of mine seem to wear in the back).

    Good all around pant

I've owned a few pair of these now and they are still great quality. Durable yet good looking - the only negative feature of this pants is the button snap which sometimes has trouble staying fastened if I'm really moving around.

    Nice Fitting, Stiff Fabric

Kuhl pants are a great fit but the Ryder fabric is very stiff. So when they are washed, multiple discolored creases happen throughout the legs.

Who do we have to kill around here to get some longee inseam pants?! Not everyone is a 32....

Hey guys, I'm a big fan of the material...

Hey guys, I'm a big fan of the material that Kuhl uses and the styling looks excellent, however the last pair of pants a bought from them also had the snap button at the waist (ridiculous in my opinion on a rugged pant) anyway, I used them for working outdoors and every time I would bend over the button would pop, not convenient when wearing gloves. Any chance they improved the design at all over the last year or two? or are they still popping open when you bend over?

Thanks for the input in advance!

P.S. Im relatively fit and have no beer belly to speak of, so that's not my issue.

Hi Miguel. I work for Kühl am writing to answer your question. Your pair of pants with the weak snap has indeed been updated. We had Fiochi, the Italian maker of our snap, re-engineer the snap for us with an improved, stronger spring. The new spring and snap design by Fiocchi takes care of the issue you mention. (contact us at cutomerservice@kuhl.com for a repair/replacement. Simply describe your issue to one of our representatives.) Hope this helps. Thanks for admiring our materials and designs.
BTW: Want to know why we use a Fiochi snap? Our snaps are designed to lay flat and not "dig" into your waist (think of the typical jean button fly with its rivet-stem-button.) When you wear a belt or a backpack with a belt, the Fiochi flat snap will prove itself to you! Cheers~ Kühl Social Media

O they updated the spring alright! Now it's almost too hard to open. I always have to yank my crotch every time I undo these. I'm not the biggest fan of the button...
However, these are excellent pants besides that small factor.

I just received a pair of Khaki Rydr's....too...

I just received a pair of Khaki Rydr's....too bad the "khaki" color is more of a green!
    Anybody else run into this?
    See the attached pic.
FYI: That's a green couch and a khaki colored blanket in the background.
    Great pants nonetheless....

Kuhl is known for there excellent customer service. I think on their web site they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. It's like, if you are not satisifed, I think even with color, you could exchange them on a return. I am not sure if they take them from Backcountry, you could ask backcountry if they would exchange the color becuase BCountry is good about returns too. I have the khakis and like the vintage dye fade, river washed fabric on the RYDR,each one is unique.
