    Room for the kitchen sink.

The Kuat Vagabond Roof Rack is a pretty simple piece of gear, but that's why it's so awesome. You can attach it to any factory bars, and Kuat made it from tough powder-coated steel that can withstand heavy loads and bad weather. A plethora of tie-downs means you won't have to constantly watch the rearview mirror to make sure your gear isn't strewn across the highway, and Kuat even integrated two skewer mounts into the front of the rack, so you can throw your bikes up on the roof with the cooler to open up even more space in the car.

Versatile rack that is light on the wallet

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The versatility of the Kuat Vagabond cannot be beat! I've used it for quite a few mountain biking trips. Holds two bikes easily. The skewer mounts actually work great with thru axle mountain bikes. Just use a 135mm rear QR to secure the fork, then the included tie downs to secure the rear tire. Holds two large plastic totes for road trips and car camping no problem.
Installation is pretty straightforward but time consuming. Only tools required is a hex that is included. There is a total of 8 hand nuts that have to be carefully tightened by hand. The windscreen is a bit easier, but be sure not to overtighten and crack the plastic mounts.
The huge advantage of the Vagabond over Thule and Yakima racks is that no specialty crossbars or mounting kits are required. All you need is a vehicle with two cross bars. Attached with no issues to the stock roof system on my Ford Explorer.

Great Rack, Killer Value, & a Pro Tip

Patience is the best tool when installing this rack. The threading on the painted u-bolts does makes it more labor intensive as Kuat provides lock nuts on the tightening lugs. It isn't hard - it just takes awhile.

Other than that I've got zero complaints. I combined this with the Yakima spare tire carrier - which required two new holes to be drilled into the mounting plate to work with the Kuat bar spacing but works perfect.

Currently the limited edition camo rack is still available - it's $105 cheaper than the black rack, this is the rack I bought. The camo print is just a vinyl sticker on one side with the backside having the Kuat "u" logo. Peel the sticker off and voila - you've got the black rack!

Size wise this is equivalent to the Yakima Mega Load Warrior.

      Cool rack, great price

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Cool rack at a great price, mounted up perfect on a Volvo XC70 without issue. The bolts are coated, so initial threading is a little difficult, but overall easy to install. QR mounts limit you to essentially road bikes only which will limit some.

      Great Rack

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this rack. It is the perfect size for my double cab Tacoma. It was easy to install, however the U-bolts are completely painted over, and if you've ever tried to thread a nut onto a bolt that is painted over, it makes it EXTREMELY difficult. I had to take the U-bolts by themselves and screw the fasteners on all the way down and back off. This scraped the paint off enough to make it possible to tighten down the basket to my roof racks. Once installed, this basket is great and I would recommend it!

One suggestion I would make to Kuat, would be to make the bike skewer mounts available in different sizes. The 9mm is not useful to me at all, but still a great cargo basket.

Feel free to reach directly out to me if you have any questions about cargo baskets or anything else on the site at all.

      Great Rack

      Great All Around Rack

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

we recently used our Burly Kuat rack. We have a 2010 VW Touraeg and it looks sharp up there. The rack itself is very easy to assemble and "grabs" right onto cross bars. We bought it and a rubberized gear bag to make more room for the 2 Aussies and new baby. Really pleased thus far with construction - although the wind scoop arrived broken - would definitely reccomend and hope it does not start rusting in our salt air...

If I have a 29'er with a 15mm thru Axle will it work with the skewer/mounting system on this basket?

I ride a Diamondback Mason Fs, if that helps.

I think you will still need to have a converter for this, similar to most bike racks.

An example is the THULE -

Any accessories for this to mount a kayak?...

Any accessories for this to mount a kayak? I have a 2005 Honda Element and I will check the dimensions.

Depending on how you plan on carrying your yak, you've got a couple options.

Different companies make several different types of kayak carriers, including the saddles or rollers, and the J type rack (search "kayak rack" and look at the different options that pop up). These types have different attachment options and will most likely include a way to attach to the bars at the front and rear of the cargo rack. The problem you'll run into might be the front mount- it might be difficult to mount it because of the windscreen.

Another option would be to use foam blocks to protect the hull of your boats. They've got a groove or slit through the center so that they fit onto the rack, with a v across the top to help keep your boat resting on them.

Depending on your boat (poly, glass or carbon) and how far you travel, you could just throw the boat on top and strap it down. I've got poly boats and for the five mins it takes to get from my house to the put in, I just put them right on the rack- no special carrier required.

Hopefully some of this helps ya out.

      Good Luck!

Considering the low profile, can a shovel and jack be mounted without hitting the vehicle?

It all depends on how high your cross bars are off the roof of your rig. Even with the low profile design, the jack will have no problem fitting. The blade of the shovel is what will most likely cause the problem if there is any- which I doubt. Usually, you can put the mount a little closer to the top edge of the rack and the tilt the shovel in.

This is a pretty sweet rack, and if your asking about a jack and shovel, you've probably got a pretty sweet rig.

Good Luck, and hope this helped.

I don't quite get what is meant by "integrated skewer mounts". I can't tell where they are on the basket. It seems to mean there are no cross bars needed for bikes. If not, where exactly would you mount a bike? Thanks.

I've got a 1999 4 door Jeep Cherokee with no OEM Rack. Does this come with gutter mounts?

The Vagabond Mounts to all factory & aftermarket cross bars, but does not come with Gutter Mounts, once you do get cross bars, the hardware is incredibly simple for installation. Hope this helps some, any more questions, post away!
