Why We Like The Freeride Air Climbing Skin

The more packable the backcountry gear, the more snacks for the skintrack... or at least that's how we see it. Kohla's Freeride Air Climbing Skin is lighter and more packable than the original Freeride skin, and we like sticking it to our ski for any backcountry tour. It touts a versatile performance that works on icy skintracks or setting on a pow day. The tip and tail attachments work on any ski, and the beefy 135mm waist can be trimmed down to fit any ski skinnier than that.

Great skins

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These skins are great! Like most skins, they do have a break-in period before they'll be gliding like intended. But the glide and girp is comparable to pomoca at a much better price.

I mean they work...

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought these because they were mohair mix... I guess... I have experience with BD STS and Pomoca "climb something 2.0" pink 120mm amazing skins. I also had some great experience with Kohla skins of unknown origin/name/variety on a demo DPS something rather. I loved how Kohla folded up at the time. It was night and day vs the STS (still is but *details*). So I went ahead and got these because of the latest storms (huge fall/winter of 2022 in the wasatch) and the skis I have are the BD Megawatts Carbon that are stupid wide nut manageable in weight. I originally had older STS (orange all over with no center strip). After having years of experience with the Pomoca I can climb anything with a decent technique. And Pomoca GLIDES... So here is the buried lede. These things glide like sandpaper. If your touring stride involves dragging the ski against the snow, pass this like a wildfire. If you pick up your feet like snowshoers do, you may not notice this. I put some glide wax on them to see if it gets better but I'm having reservations... Basically a crap skin design if you're looking for efficiency. The STS glide better and hold better in the steeps. A $139 lesson I'll not soon forget.
