Redwing Reserve Overview
Functional. Fashionable. Flyable.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I was asking for an impossible bag design and this bag has answered the call. I needed something that would work well hiking but also look good for urban exploring. It had to be large enough to carry tons of stuff yet be small enough to slide past the carry on requirements at the airport. This bag is the only bag I found that fit the bill and it is excellent. No regrets buying (and trust me I have severe buyer's remorse for almost everything but I haven't looked back since receiving this bag).
Numerous pockets designed for odd gadgets and gizmos but they aren't too "niched" where they can only hold one type of item. The material is surprisingly rugged. I was concerned the fashion aspect would come at a cost but it feels akin to a lightweight 5.11 Tactical bag. The hip belt DOES come out and I was concerned this might be a red flag at the airport for "HEY BIG BAG INCOMING" and I'd have to pay to check it but they didn't even give it a second look. The suspension system is fantastic. I carried 9 days worth of clothes, a laptop, charger, two pairs of shoes, extra belt, etc. and it never became too cumbersome, heavy, or awkward. Kudos to the design team for that black magic. Furthermore with the compression straps, I was able to squeeze all of that into this bag and still carry it on the plane and fit it perfectly in the overhead bin.
Although I haven't tested it, based on the feel of the materials and experience with multiple bag types/brands (5.11 tactical, mountain hardwear, kelty, camelbak, jansport, etc.), I can tell this bag can compete with the best of them and I can't wait to take it with me on my next camping trip.
After searching for weeks and hours upon hours of bags, I'm extremely satisfied with this bag. Stop procrastinating like I did and start exploring. Get this bag. It's worth it. Period.
Comfortable as heck!
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
"This pack feels extremely durable. I have owned a Kelty tent for 11 years now and it's still holding up to this day so I have no doubt this pack will do the same. There is plenty of space for a five day getaway with room to spare. It fits perfectly in the overhead compartments of a plane and the ease of getting to your things is very convenient."
Kelty PerfectFit suspension
Here's a great overview of how Kelty's PerfectFit suspension works.
What torso lengths does this fits, please? Does this one adjust from 15.5"-21" like the current Redwing 50 model (Item KEL004T) does?
Hi James. The new version of the Redwing 50 does still adjust from 15.5"-21". The difference is the previous model used two different frame sizes to accomplish that, while this new version uses Kelty's new PerfectFit adjustable suspension.
I've linked up a video as to how that suspension works.
