    Purify the waters.

The last thing you want to do after hiking eight miles to camp just before sundown is waste your energy—dividing it between pumping away for clean water and trying to start a fire. Save your strength by doing both at the same time with the Katadyn Base Camp Pro 10L Water Filter. Just fill the reservoir, hang it from a nearby branch, and let gravity do the rest, freeing you up to focus on getting that fire sparked. The Base Camp Pro 10L reliably filters bacteria, cysts, and sediment at a rate of two liters per minute, so you’ll have fresh water for the whole group before you can even put flint to tinder.

With the water level indicator window, you’ll easily anticipate when the next trip to the creek or lake needs to be made for another batch of fresh H2O. And when that time does come, just remove the tube with the simple quick release valve before heading to the source, as to prevent it from coming in contact with the contaminated water. Don’t worry about that freshly purified water spilling onto the ground either, because this filter is equipped with an automatic shutoff. With regular maintenance and proper cleaning, the Base Camp Pro’s Ultra Flow glass-fiber filter purifies up to 1,500 liters of water in its lifetime. However, if you don’t do such a hot job of keeping the filter itself clean, Katadyn offers a One-Year AntiClog guarantee.

Great Idea. Works great until it clogs

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Used mine twice on two separate, 4 day trips. In the middle of the second trip, the filter clogged. I backwashed it but it never worked again. Great idea, but doesn't work as well as it should, in my opinion.

    amazing filter!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This filter is fast! The 10L is big enough to take care of a group of at least 8 people without the hassle of pumping and refilling. It packs down as small if not smaller then a hand pump. Perfect for filtering water from lakes and rivers.

    Easy H20

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought this for a three day trip to Escalante and we were all pretty amazed by the speed and ease at which we could get clean water from this thing.
I would wholly agree with one of the other reviews below about using another container to get rid of any sediment first. We ended up going through an extra filter because we failed to do this. Having said that, we were collecting water from a very muddy Escalante river.
The only other, slightly obvious, point I would make is that you need to take care with the filter when storing - they are a bit delicate. So just ensure they're not going to get damaged by anything moving around in your pack.

    Easy to use water solution.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

For clean water in the backcountry the Base Camp Pro could not be a better solution.

Operation is as easy as dipping the bag in the water and rolling the top closed. Pop on the hose and take a drink, fill bottles, hydrate the dogs, etc.

The unit works well enough to keep a fairly large group well supplied with water. The clear portion of the bag make it easy to know when you're getting close to needing a refill.

    Scoop, hang, sip!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is one of the easiest water filters I have ever used. Simply dip the bag in the water to fill it up, roll the top shut, attach the hose, and enjoy delicious (and clean) water! I just took this bag through the Wind River Range and it kept 8 people, and 2 dogs, hydrated for 3 days. The whole group was amazed at how quick and easy it was to get clean water and we all agreed it was our favorite piece of gear on the trip. We left the bag hanging through heavy wind, rain, and and even a snow storm, and the bag performed flawlessly every time!

If you are looking for a simple, lightweight, and easy to use water filter system then this is the choice for you! If you have any questions about this filter, or any other filters on the site, please contact me directly.

(Here is one of my buddies getting in a last minute sip before dumping out the bag)

    Water For All

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This water filter is extremely straight forward and easy to use. It's definitely intended for base camp, but is easy enough to pull out by a stream and hang up for a refill. It's ideal for getting yourself and your group hydrated.

    Beware of the hose

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is an excellent amenity to have around the camp, and the shoulder strap makes for an effortless walk back from the water source. However, the tube my camp pro bag came with was extremely defective and sprouted multiple leaks on the first use. I can get by using a very small section of the tube, but I am still very fragile when handling it. I bought this from a local shop and not Backcountry, it must have been sitting for a while.

    Excellent for the group

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This filter works so well when you're accommodating a large number of people and needing to fill bottles for dinner time. This filter has worked flawlessly and has great features such as the clear panel for seeing the water level.
The only downside to the filter compared to the Pro Hiker is the filter doesn't have the charcoal to improve taste. I hope they eventually offer a filter with charcoal. I'm thinking it would delay output.

    Life saver!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We got this as our primary water filtering system, couldn't be happier. Only complication that we might have is if there's no trees. Easy setup, easy clean up, easy to use, lightweight. Very pleased.

    Life saver!

Well designed to it's purpose (+beyond!)

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this as a group filter for my scout troop. It works GREAT: easy to fill and hang, very fast flow rate, and simple operation for the boys. It is literally perfect for this use.

I use a Sawyer squeeze for myself—it's light and works well, but I must admit that it's a bit of a process to use sometimes. This Basecamp filter is so simple and easy to use, that I'd consider carrying it instead, even just for myself—and if they made make a slightly smaller one, I'd definitely make the switch.

The specs say it's 12.4 ounces, but that probably includes the hang strap, which you don't need to use. The included zipper pouch for your clean water tube is a nice touch though, and that will stay in my pack.

    great filter

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This filter is a must for longer than an overnight trip. It is the easiest way to filter water. You hang it on a tree and allow the water to filter through. It does not come with an additional bag to collect the clean water in, so I would either buy a separate one or be prepared to transfer into personal water bottles/camelbacks.

    Speed and ease

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The speed with which this dispenses clean water is awesome - no waiting around for trickles to fill up your bottles. I was originally looking at the smaller size, thinking that 10L is excessive for just 2 people, but got the 10L because the smaller size was out of stock. It packs small and it's easy to just roll the top down more if you don't need the extra volume so I'm glad we got this one! The only downside is that if you aren't near a tree, you need to hold it so that gravity can do it's thang.

    A No Brainer

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I moved, and I can't find my pump filter anywhere! Since Murphy's law dictates that it will turn up if I buy a new filter, I didn't want to buy a new pump filter and have two; since I was going on a four day, four person canoe camping trip, I decided to try this.

This filter is about the same weight and size as my pump filter and it is ridiculously easy to use. You put the water in the bag, hang it up, open the valve and filtered water pours into your clean container faster than you could have pumped it. Not much more to say than that. I'm sure the filter will eventually clog a bit and need to be cleaned, but that happens with ALL filters.

My old pump filter still hasn't turned up (Murphy has abandoned me this one time), but I'm not sure that I care anymore.

    Good idea, just ok results.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Ok, I admit, I was sold when I heard this filter had a shower attachment you can buy separately (item EXT000C), and I never actually bought it so maybe that would change my mind.

This was my first water filter purchase and it certainly does the job. It is lightweight, compact, easy to use and gravity does the work for you. About the first 3 times using, it filtered a consistent drip and I could fill up bottles in no time.

Then I took it to the desert and my poor filter has never been the same. The water I filtered was red and murky and must have stuck right to the filter. Still, I expect a longer filter life and will likely be using the warranty.

The filter output is down to a sad drip but still functions. Since my desert trip I no longer rely on this as my main filter and always take a pump filter with me for trail use.

The filter bag is also not a true dry bag, making this more of an 8L than a 10L. If you are able to get the full 10L back to camp without spilling everywhere I'd be super impressed!

Wayyy better than a pump, seriously!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Finally got to use this bad boy in the Tetons this past weekend. We climbed the Grand Teton in a day, it was a friggin long day so this filter reallly came in handy on the hike down at night when we ran out of water and were super tired. It's awesome, so freaking easy to set up and then it literally does all of the work for you. Hah, however, I immediately realized upon filling it up that I would have been fine with the 6L bag by Katadyn....meh, whatever! I didn't NEED to fill the whole thing up...I was curious to see how quickly it filtered and it's close to the 2 L per minute. The 10L will be nice when I'm backpacking with a large group.

We were stoked to just sit there and let it happen, way better than pumping for 10 minutes. The entire thing is pretty compact and definitely lightweight. I'm seriously in love with this filter! MUST USE AGAIN SOON

Wayyy better than a pump, seriously!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've used this in mountain streams, in the U.S. This is lightweight and brainlessly easy to use. My 12 year old and I put it together in about 3 minutes. The previous review does go into detail about it's parts, so I won't go into that here.

I love this because it filters quickly, it's easy to use and it's really light. It also hold a lot of water. So, if your camp's not set up right next to a water source, you won't have to go back and forth, during meal time. Also, it's enough water to have a complete shower. The shower adapter is sold, separately.

NOTE: If I was traveling in an area where even small amounts of contaminated water could make you ill, I would use a separate container to collect the water to pour into the bag, as to not contaminate the hose, or have unfiltered water run down the outside of bag and drip into your cup or water bottles.

With that said, I put the bag right in our mountain streams here in Utah, and we've always been healthy after our trips.

Do you buy a new filter after the 1500 liter lifetime or throw it away or what,? 1st time that I have heard of this. Thank you

Hello, I am wondering how watertight the seals are. I am planning a backcountry trip where I might be a mile away from a water source. Is the seal strong enough for me to fill this up then put it in my pack? Or should I pay extra close attention to water spillage?
    Thank you,

The seals are pretty darn bomb proof in my expirence, its pretty much a dry bag with a nozzle on the bottom, which will be the weak point for sure but it is built extremely well I have had mine for two years no issues. or leaks. The one thing about travel I would recommend it make sure you check how you are packing it specifically in the nozzle are because as you hike if you have some loose items they can possibly turn the nozzle to the on position and make the water flow out., also this is the 10 Liter model which is a huge amount of water so it may not even fit in a fully loaded pack with clothes, pads, sleeping bags etc, and hooking it to the outside of the pack may be a good idea along with taking the worry away from it leaking all over your bag.

Can this filter be cleaned in the field? What is the cleaning process if it becomes clogged with use?

So this bad boy will knock out the beaver fever?

You got it Cody. The Katadyn Base Camp Pro Filter will protect you from beaver fever (a.k.a. Giardia).
