    Zip-on zip-off protection.

When you're heading out for a ride, protection shouldn't be an afterthought, but none the less we often forget to put on our knee pads before we get our shoes laced up, which is why the designers at Ion made the K-Pact Zip Knee Pads. Enabling us to enjoy the coverage and confidence that is brought from Ion's well-loved K-Pact, but with a top-to-bottom zipper that makes for easy adding or removal without taking off your shoes, so you can free your knees for long climbs, and toss on your pads for a safer descent, or zip them on in the lift-line with ease.

The K-Pact Zip knee pads are made tough, with a hardshell front and dense foam sides for keeping your knees protected when you're blasting berms and weaving through tight trees. Ion's padding of choice comes from SAS-TEC, a Germany-based company that excels in armor for motorcycles, so you can trust it's built for high speeds and serious impacts. It's sewn onto a breathable neoprene sleeve that is heavily perforated to allow mesh-like breathability, but with superior coverage and protection. The top and bottom of the pad feature a silicone gripper, as well as an elastic strap with hook-and-loop closure to secure the pad, so you don't have to worry about them slipping when you're mashing on the pedals.

    • Beefy pads zip-on-and-off capabilities
    • SAS-TEC hardshell pad for moto level protection
    • 3D foam on sides protect from all angles
    • Top-to-bottom zipper for easy on and off
    • Internal placket keeps zipper off of your skin
    • Super-perforated neoprene lets your legs breathe
    • Silicone gripper keeps pads from sliding around
    • Elastic straps at top and bottom secure placement

    Great Protection but Runs Small

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Just got these yesterday. After looking at most of them it was down to these or the Sweet Protection. Glad I did. The pads are comfortable but if I had to to it again I'd just get the ones without the zippers. The zipper is a pain to get started and keep zipping up so it's just easier to slide them up. The sizing on these and the E-Pact run small. I was told I was between a Medium and Large on both and have to exchange the mediums for a size up. I'll update after a ride today.

ETA: After three of four rides, these pads are good. I got the correct size for the E-Pacts and even Large was a little tighter than I was expecting but manageable. Yeah, they're hot, but it's summertime and 90+ degrees out so I didn't expect anything else. They stay up, provide protection, and give me some more piece of mind on rides. Well worth the investment.

    SAS-TEC pads ripped in half

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These knee pads are incredibly comfortable and they stay put while riding. I especially liked the zipper feature for not only the ease of putting on/taking off, but it also helped to prevent the pads from stretching out and getting loose. I am disappointed in the quality of the pads though. After less than 3 months of use, both pads tore in half. I have not had any crashes so the only thing I can think of is riding in the cold weather made the material more brittle and they ripped from pedaling. I tried to contact Ion to see if this is normal or not but have not heard from them. I had high hopes for these pads but am quite displeased. (None of my buddies€™ pads by other brands have ripped from riding in the same conditions)

    Chloe,
If you get no reply from Ion, may suggest you contact SAS-Tec in Germany directly. They seem very customer focussed and would prob sort you out with a new pair. They might also appreciate the feedback on their product.

    Ion Rocks!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I discovered this brand thanks to Backcountry and it puts all other knee pads to shame (except possibly the POC VPD 2.0 - but only as a contender for the best). I've been loving all the knee pads from them, and they are all a little different, which is great - different types of riding styles and preferences. The protection is also great, as I have crashed a few times on them and had no sliding and my knees were protected!

    Knee-pads that stay up

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had the POC DH 2.0 VPD etc, etc... They were pretty good, not great because they fell down a lot. These ion pads do not, they stay up...period. The zipper was something I opted for and wasn't sure how I would feel about it. First time I wore them the zipper bothered me, after that, they've been mint. I love these things and I think they have pads on the side of the knee which is also awesome because I think I used to hit that on flow/jump trails a lot and didn't realize it (I'm learning). The ability to take them off and drop my stuff in the car easily (because they unzip) and go grab a beer, also cannot be measured. Love them so much I bought the elbow pads too. One thing I cannot say is how long the zipper will last, but if it does fail I'd opt for the non-zipper version. I read an article about these being the best rated knee-pad and in my opinion they are for downhill/aggressive riding but I wear them always.

    Great pad, Not for me

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium and Large

I have been looking at some different knee pads for quite a while, something that has good protection, stays in place during the pedal and has an overall feel of just being awesome.

To be clear I never wore these on the bike or went for a pedal with them. What really interested me in these was the zipper and thought how nice it would be to keep them on a pack and just throw on for the DH portion of the ride.

    As per there size chart
My leg measures in at 17"(43cm) and 13.75"(35cm) which puts me a little in between the medium and the large. I didn't find that either felt comfortable to me and at the bottom where the zipper connects it felt bulky.

Medium is 15.5" & Large is 17.5" measured 4" above knee cap &
Medium is 13" & Large is 13.75" measured 6" below the knee cap
    (size chart) https://www.ion-products.com/sizechart-gloves-protection/
The Inch portion reads incorrect for the knee protection

Needless to say I returned these without ever taking them out on the trail.

    Innovative Pad

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I recently picked these up for a five day trip to Flagstaff and Sedona, AZ and have feedback to share. The riding we were doing was a lot of XC - uphill then quick descents then back uphill again - and these performed really well! Usually for this type of riding I would use my G-Forms but wanted to test these out and was surprised to find that I loved them! They pedaled really well and I felt comfortable knowing that my knee had such burly protection. However, they still were really hot. We were riding in averages temps in the 80's. So, although I loved them, I wouldn't recommend this pad as an XC pad but it's great for downhill or shuttling. One other feature that I was unsure about at first but ended up loving is the zips! I loved being able to finish up the ride and then immediately unzip these bad boys to let my knees breathe in the parking lot. I would definitely recommend these to anyone!
