The Industry Nine Trail 270 Boost 29in Wheelset just might be the lucky number three in the Trail lineup. Borrowing the best bits from its predecessor, the Trail 245, and the hard-hitting Enduro305's and Grade300's, the Trail 270 rolls forward with more power than any Industry Nine Trail wheel before it, without compromising on weight. The result is a spirited wheel with the power of an enduro beast, ready to conquer rock-spattered trails of the north-east, but with nimble, light handling for enduring tedious climbs through switchbacks in forests of towering trees with chunky roots that require quick line reading and power moves. This ride experience comes to us in the package of an aluminum hoop laced up to a legendary hub, bumped out to boost spacing to ensure stiff control and power all across the mountain.
The Trail 270 borrows heavily from the hard-hitting Enduro 305's and Grade 300's, which we admit isn't much of a surprise as trail riders push further into backcountry adventures and crave wider tires for a plusher ride. Still starting out with the reliable aluminum as used in the Trail245's, the Trail 270's stretch out the rim to a 27mm internal, adding the internal space you need to run up to a 2.5-inch tire, and maintaining the bead-locking seat to ensure a stronger seal. Riding with bigger tires not only gives you more traction, but also adds another element to your suspension, allowing you to run with lower tire pressures to soak up roots and trail chatter along the way, keeping you more planted throughout the ride. In addition to tire clearance, the wider rim comes with added strength, thanks to a more tapered bead wall that improves flat-resistance. With the elevation in durability and strength, Industry Nine is boasting the Trail 270 as the most impact-resistant rim in the Trail lineup to date.
The wheels are built up on Industry Nine's signature Torch Mountain System Chassis, which is largely responsible for the band's enthusiastic following. The super reliable Torch alloy hubs are laced up to the 270's with Industry Nine's machined 7075-T6 aluminum spokes, which thread directly into the hubs. This distinctive choice eliminates weakness at the spoke and hub interface, allowing for increased surface area and a stronger wheel system overall. The hubs themselves rely on Industry Nine's proprietary pawl design, which features two sets of three pawls phased three degrees from each other to provide 120 points of contact and a snappy three degrees of engagement. The rear hub was tested to withstand an excessive 700ft/lbs of torque — roughly what a diesel truck puts out — which should put any thoughts of slippage or power loss on rocky, technical cruxes firmly out of your mind.
The update in the Trail rim allows Industry Nine to play around with aesthetics a bit, too, aiming to please more riders with graphics that use understated simplicity to match with any ride. The new graphics contour to the rim, and skip any bright coloring that might clash with your kit, so you can happily place them on your flashy, color-matched steed just as well as a stealthy black-on-black setup.

Great review from Pinkbike
Industry Nine have made my go-to wheelset for all-around trail riding with their Trail 270. No, they're not cheap, but being able to easily switch freehub bodies and end caps to make the wheels work on multiple bikes is a plus, and I've seen many wheelsets outlast bikes here in Western NC where the brand has a strong following. Hell, people buy the wheels used, a fact that in and of itself says a lot. The Trail 270 is a strong, lightweight, and precision made wheelset that can be made to stand out from the crowd, but what makes these wheels really great is what goes on inside the hubs.
Great MTB Wheelset
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Particularly huge upgrade if you're upgrading out of an ALU wheelset that came with the bike. They look amazing, too.
For me it was a huge weight savings, and the stiffness/responsiveness was very noticeable and close to, or feeling the same as a carbon wheelset.
Using with Minion DHF 2.5 (Front) / Ardent 2.4 (Rear).
