    Great active jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: small
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 165lbs

The insulation panels in the front do a great job of blocking wind and keeping you warm, while the rest of the jacket is very breathable. The torso is a little long so the fit is weird if you're sitting down, but this jacket is designed for moving!

    Versatile layer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got this layer a month ago and have worn it most days. Good news:
    1. It's slim fitting, and fits under my cycling softshell, itself a pretty slim fit.
    2. It's wool, and smells nice even when you get sweat and desert all over it.
    3. It insulates well for active wear and it's comfy enough to wear on the couch.
    4. The torso is long, which is good for an insulating midlayer.
    Bad news:
    1. The sleeves are not long enough for me to use the thumbholes--I'm worried I'm going to stretch it out or rip it. But then, I'm pretty gangly; those shorter of limb may have better luck.
    2. It would be more stylish as a two-tone jacket, like the Marmot Variant. It's kind of ninja-turtly lookin' as it stands, but you do get some sartorial leeway in active wear, of course.

    I'm 5'11", like a buck-sixty-five and got a Medium, for the record.

    Perfect for Winter running

I take out the Ellipse for my really cold winter morning runs. I tend to overheat trying to run in insulated tops, but the Ellipse has breathable and stretch side panels and back which helps regulate my body temp really well. The front insulation is just enough to break the cold wind while not overheating you. The front zip pockets are the perfect size to stash some gloves, keys and wallet. Oh and one of my favorite things about the Ellipse is that I can put in over a weeks worth of runs before I need to wash it!

    More Hybrid than a Prius

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'4"
    • Weight: 180lbs

This is hands down my favorite midlayer. I originally thought I would just be using this for touring (which it does extremely well), but ended up using it for much more than that. As a touring layer, it sheds heat through the back and arms (where it is not insulated). Paired with a merino baselayer, and a breathable shell, it is hard to beat. I have taken off my shell jacket and worn this piece as a standalone on the way uphill as well. The DWR sheds light snow showers with ease. The part I like most about the Ellipse is that it is insulated where you need it (to keep your core/internals toasty), and merino in the rest of the garment. I started using it as a layer for resort riding as well since the insulation on the front protects from icy gusts on the chairlift and blasting wind from going 90mph in the NASTAR course. I agree with the other review stating the fabric on the back and sleeves is thin; however, I find it to be very beneficial in mobility and heat management. Overall, this is a great high performance product, and well worth the extra cash. Highly recommend it.

Nice jacket....but not what I needed

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 180lbs

Purchased this jacket as a replacement for a SmartWool PhD that the zipper finally gave out on. I received this in a timely fashion and it was packaged well.

The front insulated panels are very well constructed, stop wind well, and are quite warm. The stitching of the jacket over all is well done. My biggest problem came from the arm and back areas of the jacket. While the picture makes the fabric seem rather substantial, in reality it is very, VERY thin. I could hold this jacket up to the light and see through the back. If you are being highly active in this jacket it would be great in cooler/cold weather. However, I was needing a jacket for more casual pursuits.

Overall the jacket is quite nice and fits mostly true to size (arms were a touch long). Just be aware what you are buying.

Hey Joel! Thanks for the review. Have you checked out the Patagonia Nano Air Hybrid? Both Smartwool and Icebreaker make some awesome products - if you are looking for a more substantial fabric, that Nano Air Hybrid might be more along the lines of what you are looking for! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
