Why We Like The Ripley SLX Mountain Bike
Light, fast, and just plain ol' fun to ride, the Ibis Ripley continues to be one of our favorite short-travel 29ers. 120mm of DW-Link rear travel gets us up and down the mountain quickly and efficiently, driven by top-level FOX Factory suspension that keeps our tires glued to the ground through rough terrain. The Ripley perfectly blends the speedy characteristics of a cross-country bike with the capability of an all-mountain steed, helping us rocket up the mountain in record time and then turn around to set our personal best time on the descent.
Geometry on the current version of the Ibis Ripley is part of what makes it such a special bike. The angles are balanced and offer a planted feel on descents, with a nice agile feel on undulating terrain and a comfortable pedaling position for sustained climbing. The 66.5-degree head-tube angle and big 29in wheels plow over obstacles, and the reach is pretty generous, with 475mm offered on a size large frame to give us plenty of room to move around on the bike. Though the Ripley resembles a trail bike and rides like one too, replacing the aggressive Maxxis tires with something a little more spritely brings out the cross-country enthusiast in all of us and wouldn't be out of place at a local XC race.
Kit on the Ibis Ripley is adorned with the Shimano SLX drivetrain from top to bottom. Shimano uses 12-speed technology paired with Hyperglide II engineering to build one of the smoothest drivetrains on the market. SLX is the workhorse of the group, offering long-lived components with budget-friendly replacement costs. The 4-pistons brakes from Shimano offer smooth and reliable braking to quickly bring the bike to a stop while 180mm rotors do their best to quickly dissipate heat. Ibis supplies the wheels with their aggressive 35mm internal width hoops paired with a Schwalbe 2.6in tires for maximum flotation over the rough stuff.
