Why We Like The Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Ice 55L Backpack

When it comes to ice climbing in the alpine, the lighter the better, and we're hard-pressed to find a big pack lighter than Hyperlite Mountain Gear's 3400 Ice Backpack. This pack's 55L capacity has enough room for climbing big lines and spending weekends in places like the Teton's meadows. Hyperlite kept this pack's weight down to two pounds by making it out of Dyneema, the same fabric used in climbing equipment, for long-lasting durability at a shockingly low mass.

Unique to Hyperlite Mountain Gear, the Dyneema Hardline suspension system lines the back panel and shoulder straps in padded foam and spacer mesh for breathable comfort, and there are removable aluminum stays for extra stability when we need it. Hyperlite Mountain Gear equipped this pack with fully taped seams and a roll-top closure for protection against wet weather and snowy conditions. There's an internal zippered pocket for valuables and an external attachment system for crampons and ice axes.

I've used this for a couple of winters in the CO rockies as well as a few trips elsewhere, including the french alps. I've also used this a handful of times for backpacking in other seasong. Whether I'm strapping snowshoes or my tent to the back of this bag, I have a place for everything. I love both of my hyperlite bags, and I wouldn't consider another brand after my experience with the gear and the customer service. I've had no issues with this bag so far, but my older daypack had a buckle break. They quickly sent a replacement. For me, this bag handles every situation where I need more than a daypack, and it does so very well. It's expensive, but the material is tough and light. I've spend plenty of time on rocks and strapping sharp and pointy things to the bag without any tears or visible damage. I still love that this is less than half the weight of my former overnight bag with a little extra capacity. Plus, you can just not roll the top if you need even more space. I love this bag and this brand!
