Why We Like The Speedgoat 4 GTX Trail Running Shoe

The HOKA ONE ONE Speedgoat 4 GTX Trail Running Shoe handles a little bit of rain and then some, thanks to its waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX membrane and Vibram Megagrip outsole. Pouring rain and mid-trail puddles don't even drench our socks with the full waterproof bootie design, while 5mm Megagrip lugs ensure that even wet surfaces don't catch us slipping on the trail. This trail runner features greater heel support and a more supportive midfoot design, keeping our feet cradled and stabilized even when we're darting around roots and rocks.

Very Comfortable Winter Running Shoe But Soles Wear Easily

These are a joy to run, hike or walk in. That said, I have been using them shoe for two seasons and, as a mild pronator, the knobs at the back of the sole were pretty well worn off after about 100mi of mostly pavement running (I use the Salomon Speedcross 5 for pure trail running). The rest of the sole is still in pretty good shape and the rear is thick enough that the shoe is still usable and the rest of the shoe looks like new. However, I worry about heel slipping on snow (hasn't happened yet) so I purchased a new pair for when that happens. Another issue is that with the flat sole design, you can't wear gaiters unless they have like Kevlar straps over the sole as regular straps will wear through with one good outing as they are always against the walking surface rather than protected up against the sole in all my other similar shoes. Fortunately, when there is snow on the road, the Salomon trail shoes above work well with gaiters. I normally wear an 8.5M USA but in these I needed a size 9 - the width is roomy but not an issue. I still have not found a better waterproof heavy duty winter pavement running shoe so will continue with this.

Water resistant and Good Traction

Water resistant, good traction, foot sleeve like shoes, tight on the instep, and a little narrow.... Was hoping it would be wider.

Still Undecided

I wanted a Gore-tex shoe and had a great experience recently with my first pair of Hoka's for running (Bondi 8). I was hesitant to purchase due to the price, but have had bad quality experiences with my normal Gore-tex shoe (Merrill) and thought I'd try these. My first impression was the shoe looked differently than I expected, and not in a good way. Somehow I missed the yellow trim in the pictures, and the tongue is a thin piece of material that I worried would make the shoe laces (which also have yellow) feel uncomfortable if tied to tightly (they're OK). Putting the shoe on, it felt stiff and very tight, even with the laces relaxed. I was worried it would rub/cause blisters (I tend to get blisters behind/above my heel quite easily with boots), but once the shoe was on it felt fine, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the soul/cushioning was - similar to my running shoes and unexpected in a waterproof shoe. They do feel a bit narrow in the toe-box for me, but maybe they'll feel better after breaking them in more. The grip is incredible - it's almost as if there's suction cups on the bottom of the shoes. I haven't warn them in a wet environment yet, so I can't comment on the waterproofness (one of the main reasons I bought them). I'll be wearing these at an amusement park for a week soon. I may update this post depending on the outcome. For now, I'm still a bit undecided.

Almost perfect for my use

Love the comfort, grip and protection -- more like a 4.5 out of 5. Would be a perfect 5 if more durable -- I've owned many Speedgoats and they tend to last me 4-5 months with daily use (hour hike per day on average). After 4-5 months, can feel rocks more and tread worn down considerably. I tried the Alpaca and durability moderately better but not as comfortable or light as Speedgoat.

5 stars all day

These GTX are waterproof but not overly warm in upstate NY. They have been 100% good for me (shinsplints and plantar fasciitis). I do more walking than running but they have been excellent for hiking in river gorges and parks with my dog. They are also totally fine for walking on streets/sidewalks too with no wear and tear after one month.

Feel unstable

I've owned several pair of Hokas mainly Clifton's but these feel unstable and run small compared to the other Hokas that I have owned.

Soldier Approved

I bought these with the Army's Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) in mind. They not only performed well for me during the Sprint, Drag, and Carry event, but also during the 2 mile run. Im sure trail running will be a breeze with these. I just hope they become a bit more affordable by the time I have to get a new pair.

Very comfortable

If I could get these shoes at 120 every time, they would be my everyday shoes. I would be willing to pay 150 if they were US made.

Great Grip!

Still breaking these in so can't give them a 5 star yet. A little hard to get on but comfortable once accomplished. The most noticeable feature is the outstanding grip! Have not gone off road yet but outstanding on pavement.
