Ever wonder what it's like to run on a cloud?

Short of buying twenty cases of marshmallows and scattering them across the pavement, hitting the road in the HOKA ONE ONE Challenger ATR 3 Women's Running Shoe is the closest thing to running on pure fluff. With an oversized EVA midsole and HOKA's smooth-rolling early stage Meta-Rocker, the Challenger will keep you cruising over everything from rolling trails to the sidewalks and streets that surround your home. Part of what makes the Challenger so versatile is its all-terrain sole, which features 4mm lugs for exceptional traction on both dirt and pavement. HOKA even threw in an Ortholite insole to add a bit more cushy goodness to the already plush equation.

    • Light and airy running sneaker for going off-road
    • Clean, seamless upper offers a breathable ride
    • Oversized midsole provides plenty of cushion over bumps
    • Podular lug design gives you stability over uneven terrain
    • Cushy insole keeps your feet feeling fine
    • Rocker geometry produces a gait-friendly, smooth roll
    • Lace-up closure for a secure, personalized fit

Good trail or just all around shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I did receive these from backcountry for review but the foillowing is my opinion, I am an avid trail and off trail peakbagger (just did the 10 days of the sierra challenge) I find the Hoka ATR 4’s shoes exceptionally comfortable, like a Altra but not zero drop (which for me, I do not like). I think they are great if staying on trail, but too sloppy and not enough traction for off trail scrambling, scree, boulder hopping I do, with that said again on trail they are super comfortable and could be used for backpacking, thru hikes etc. They are great for work standing on concrete all day. I will stick with the stickier rubber of other brands for most of the hiking I do. The Hoka ATR’s were true to size I where 8.5 in La Sportivas and an 8.5 in these although some say you may need to size up 1/2 size in the sportivas. i think the Hoka ATR’s are a great replacement for the Altras for people who do not like zero drop (for whatever reason).

    Reliable Long Distance Trail Shoe

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my wife's go-to trail shoe. She wears these until they literally fall apart, and replaces. The downside is the upper does tear and wear out on rugged terrain, brush, etc., but the cushion and support are ideal for motoring over a variety of trail terrain. 4 stars only because the material wears a bit sooner than expected.

    A Cushy, Stable, Ride

The redesign of the ATR 4 upper is perfect. The shoe is more glove-like and supple than the 3. The design is also more roomy as a result. Be prepared to wear thicker trail running socks to compensate for the change. This is also a sizing matter. Hoka’s tend to run small so sizing up a half size, coupled with the new upper easily accommodates hot feet and swelling on long runs. As mentioned before, as long as you go thick on the sock coverage the fit ends up being ideal. The 4 sports the same meta rocker spring ride but with beefier lugs for enhanced grip. These shoes stick! On my recent trip to the Sierra, my running route included sections of granite slab notorious for “ball bearing” scree. The 4s has no problem gripping, confidentially sticking each stride on terrain I normally shuffle down for control. Really happy with the small improvements to the ATR. If you were a fan of the 3, you will undoubtedly love the 4s! If you are wondering if you should get these, and are new to the Hoka brand; it is a definite yes! Nothing beats the technology, support and grip of the ATR. Right out of the box and these shoes are trail ready. Grab those thick socks and go!
