    Warm and Well-Made

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Have owned several Hestra gloves in the past, and they have never disappointed. This pair appears to be no exception. Durable and warm. Pretty pricey, however.

    Well worth the money

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am so happy I spent the money on these mittens. Normally I do not go Winter backpacking in places where a mitten this warm would be necessary. However when the prediction of the Feb 2019 'polar vortex' was reported I panicked at the thought of -25 degree temperatures. While it didn't get that cold in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, it was ten degrees below zero and I was so thankful I decided to spend the money on these mittens. I got a size larger (XXL (11)) than needed to double layer if needed. While on the trail in snowshoes and generating lots of heat, the liners themselves were more than adequate when the temperatures were in the teens. At camp with mostly standing around I was glad to slip my hands into the mittens and immediately feel the warmth build. The mittens have wrist leashes which means no more lost gloves in critical situations (touch wood). The leather parts of the gloves care, and a small amount of the leather conditioner is provided by the manufacturer. I have spent over the years hundreds and hundreds of dollars on gloves and mittens to prevent cold hands and these Hester mittens are worth the cost of all other products. Hands down.

Wouldn't Want Any Other Mitts on Logan

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I summited Mt. Logan (the second tallest mountain in North America) in June 2018 and depended on these mitts when temperatures were regularly -20F and below, including all the way down to -44F. The removable liner that comes with these mitts are equally as impressive, and I wore them alone when it wasn't as cold. On the coldest day down to -44F, my thumbs were cold, yet my fingers were not. I wouldn't want to go anywhere near Logan without these mitts.

This was my first experience with Hestra and I will absolutely be picking up more gloves in the future.

My extreme cold go-to mitts! Toasty...

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The build quality is great with superb leather quality and stitchwork to match. The cuff is ample so fitting over expedition weight shell wrist-closures is easy and secure. They are well suited for 10 degrees F and colder and I have been satisfied easily to -26 degrees so far. A bit too warm at 20 degrees F and warmer unless your just sitting around, such as belaying a fellow climber or observing wildlife or astronomy on a clear, crisp Winter night.

I am very pleased and would buy Hestra brand again when the need arises. Toasty fingers!

    very warm, hopefully durable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Have worn these a bunch in our chicago winter so far this year. Extremely warm, and the leather helps some with grip. Read a good tip for applying the included leather oil, warm up the leather a bit with a hair dryer, and just wear a pair of latex or nitrile gloves and apply with your fingers. Then the oil goes into the leather, not into a cloth or your hand.

Does anyone know how this would compare...

Does anyone know how this would compare to the OR Alti Mitts? I am seriously debating between the two. I like the apparent durability of the Hestra Expedition Mitten, but can't find any reviews re: warmth. The Alti's appear to be the go-to standard for high altitude mountaineering, which is my primary intended use.

Dude I am a fan of Hestra they make great gloves but nothing I have ever used has come close to the Alit mitts they are my go to mitts . I have used them down to -65 and they saved my fingers that night . You will not be disappointed . Pic of me with them on Mt . Marcy over 80mph winds very cold old my hands were nice and warm :)
