    Rise and shine.

If you can't resist heading outside into the kind of winter weather that's both invigorating and pitiless, it's crucial for your gear to perform under terse conditions. With the help of pro freeskiers and obsessive attention from Helly Hansen designers, the Helly Hansen Men's Ridge Shell Jacket arrives equipped to protect you on the most relentless days. Conquer bitterly cold winds, deep skin tracks, and swirling, snowy ridges, and the Ridge Shell will keep you warm and dry from the summit until you're back in the cabin.

Built with a three-layer Helly Tech Professional shell and Flow membrane, the Ridge Shell delivers reliable waterproof, breathable protection when you're on the mountain. Plus, it has a slightly roomier cut for improved mobility, layering leeway, and protection against the harsh elements. The strategic ventilation zippers, chest pockets, and handwarmer pockets are all positioned to be backpack-compatible, while the zipper pulls and hook-and-loop adjustable cuffs are conveniently large enough for you to grab and pull with a glove or mitten.

As backcountry efforts often include travelling in herds, the high visibility trim, brim, and helmet-compatible hood have a bold, neon pop that make you easily distinguishable to friends when you're cruising through the fluffy stuff or densely wooded areas. The jacket-to-pant compatible powder skirt, high collar, goggle wipe and Recco advanced rescue system seal the deal with their premium freerider-specific features.

    • Jacket for chasing the goods in inhospitable conditions
    • Waterproof shell with DWR coating for extra water resistance
    • Relaxed fit accommodates layers and provides extra coverage
    • Powder skirt and jacket-pant compatibility seals out snow
    • Wealth of backpack-compatible pockets keep your stuff safe

    Love this Jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 190lbs

I've been able to put a handful of days in on the Ridge jacket this spring and it certainly did not disappoint. Coming from the top of the line Marmot jacket, I found this shell to be a bit burlier which made it my go-to storm-day jacket. At first I was a bit put off by the higher cuff for the hood, but after using it with the hood I can't imagine a jacket without it. It does a phenomenal job keeping the elements out and my face warm on the blistery days. Lastly, the Ridge shell has tons of pockets to store anything and everything you could ask for, as well as big vents in case the weather breaks and you find yourself needing to dump some heat.

    Ridge Shell Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 180lbs

The fit, windproofness and breatheability make it a great shell in ski country. Just one minor Con, the bottom pockets/zippers are too tough to access with a pack....they're simply not needed.

    Great No Fuss Jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XXL
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 245lbs

Disclaimer: Own and wear previous years RidgeShell Jacket.

Have utilised this jacket in multiple conditions; white-out, heavy snow, windy, wet and blue bird spring fun(temp range, -10 to +7 Celsius).

The Jacket. Simple and user friendly, pocket placement worked well for my purposes, even with a backpack.
    - A few complaints that have circulated regarding the jacket were that despite the lower front pockets being located for use with a backpack, they remained non user friendly when a backpack waist strap was in use- During my use I did not find this to be the case and infact found these pockets to be extremely user friendly and useful. Backpack was utilised for touring, backcountry, day to day mountain use and speedriding with no interference to pocket use.
    - Big burly front zipper makes for easy use with gloves.
    - Powder skirt is tight fitting and works a charm for those deeper moments of bliss and or when you come unstuck and become a snow collection unit, however, a sturdy draw string in the bottom ensures that you have a mitigation measure available.
-The high 'vis' visor trim, has worked a charm in low light and heavy conditions with companions being able to identify during periods of uncertainty or simply those moments where identification is needed.
-The relaxed fit is true to form and great for the bigger, athletic build or for those who prefer the freedom, however, the light weight build and softer construction material makes it easy to tuck away when the skies warm up.
    - Big velcro cuffs are a plus and the wrist gators are a nice added benefit.

A couple of cons that I have found during use, however, were not a deal breaker for myself. The small easy to grab cords on the small pockets, especially under arm vents, worked loose and have had to replace them with other canopy line in order to make them user friendly when conditions get cold. Under arm vent zippers are one directional so you need to be flexible and patient when utilising or get a mate to unzip you if you are kitted up. an elastic net pocket would be a nice internal addition for goggles, however, that is really getting into the weeds.

I would purchase again and recommend, the quality is there and remains. Remember it is a shell, utilise appropriate layers and enjoy.

    Great No Fuss Jacket!

@Michael N., I remained with my normal jacket size XXL, is tighter than my normal fit XXL, but comfortable and can be layered. Would suggest a Medium for the shoulders, arms and layering if you are athletic build. Comparison, I wear a XXL across the board and have worn a XXL Sidewinder by Arc'teryx which by comparison is slightly looser fit.
