A timeless gift; and yes, it's fine to give it to yourself.

Whether you're hunting for massive bucks or hunting for the kind of gift that will be a prized possession for a lifetime and for generations to come, the Helle Harding Knife has you covered. This traditional barrel handle hunting knife looks old fashioned, and that's because it's one of those rare items in which the design was perfect a pretty damned long time ago. You'll appreciate the high quality, razor sharp triple laminated stainless steel blade, but that's only after you admire the beauty of the handle, which Helle made from a combination of curly birch and darkened oak; it separated these gorgeous woods with leather accents just to, you know, make this knife even prettier than it already was. The embossed leather sheath has a handle butt retainer and protects your new treasure from harm.

    Beautiful and functional

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was immediately impressed with the quality of this knife. Even the packaging is nice. It's made in Norway with handcrafting by a company that's been around since the 1930s. The care and quality of manufacture definitely shows. The blade is keenly polished, and the handle feels amazing. The wood is smooth and ergonomically shaped. The knife is rather light, but still feels very solid. I like to keep everything I own in like-new condition which means sometimes I'm even afraid to use nice objects like this knife. But as soon as I held it, I felt it would stand up to field work just fine. I've only used it for cutting up some thick memory foam so far. Though it was a little small for the job, it cut well.
The sheath is equally beautiful. It doesn't have any special decoration, but it seems well-built and the flap that slips over the bottom of the knife handle is an elegant feature.
